Premier Planning

24th June 2021
“Good morning gentleman,” John Berylson began. “First off, I think we all owe a lot of gratitude to Tyrone and the team for what has been a magical moment for the club.”

The directors all mumbled in agreement. Sat in the room was chairman Berylson, CEO Steve Kavanagh, as well as directors Rob Harvey, Demos Kouvaris, James Berylson, Trevor Keyse and Constantine Gonticas as well as managers of the first-team, U23 and U18 teams.

“On the agenda for our first season in the reformed Premier League, we have a lot to get through. We’ll start off with financials, as I think that they are relevant to all parts of the club.

“We move into the new season with a current balance of £8.2million. With Premier League television rights and selections throughout the year, we estimate a natural turnover to sit at around £103million for the year, which is a 317% increase from last season’s £24.7million figure.

“This means that we will be looking to offer Tyrone and his team a £35million transfer budget with an additional £12.35million towards the annual wage budget.

“Assuming that this transfer budget is spent without player sales, we project a £16.13million balance by the season end - almost double our current balance.” Steve Kavanagh finished.

The boardroom nodded to each other in agreement and surprise at the high figures expected this season.

John Berylson looked over to Tyrone as a cue to open up his own file to take the lead over first-team recruitment and plans.

“Tyrone will run us through this season’s aims and plans now,” John said, showing his hand over to him.

“Yes, thanks John.” Tyrone said as he skipped to the correct pages. “I would like to thank you all for your executive and moral support over the past year, it’s really helped me feel comfortable and I am as delighted as anyone to have achieved the play-off victory last month.

“Regarding changes to the club on a on-field basis, we are increasing the coaching and scouting capacity and budgets to better suit the facilities that we need at this level of the game.

“In the scouting department, Tony Coton, David Moss, Steve Hetzke, Russell Hullett, Martin Dobson, Gary Goodchild and Ged McNamee will be coming in to replace the out-of-contract Lars Mrosko, Tommy Miller, Gerhard Tremmel and Mick MacNeill. Mark Stow will be coming in from Gillingham as our chief scout as Terry Bullivant will be relieved of his duties.

“I am sure it comes as no surprise that I am delighted to be rid of Adam Barrett as assistant manager as his contract expires!” Tyrone laughed, joined by the members of the board and management.

“Nigel Gibbs has left his role in Brugges to join us here and be my right-hand man. In a new-look coaching team: James Beattie, Colin Cooper, Anthony Colbert, Mark Sale, Darryl Flahavan, Joe Dunne, Bobby Mimms and David Coles all come in for this season.

“To assist on the performance and recruiting analyst side of things, we are revamping that so we go into the Premier League with a much stronger assessment team. Similarly, our medical staff have been bolstered by three new additions.” Tyrone said as he completed the staff part of his agenda.

“Regarding the playing team, we are losing a fair chunk of last season’s side with Shaun Williams, Ryan Leonard, Alex Pearce, Murray Wallace, Matty Pearson, Frank Fielding, Ryan Sandford, Alex Mitchell and Ross Wallace all leaving following their contract expiry. They have been fantastic servants so they all received thanks from us here.

“With regards to returning loanees, Ryan Woods, Conor McLaughlin and Scott Malone have all returned to their respective clubs.

“We are delighted to announce loan extensions for Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore who fired us to glory together last time around, so that will be great. Continuing on outgoings, though, Connor Mahoney has completed his £2.6million transfer to Swansea after his loan meanwhile Danny McNamara and Sam Skeffington join Bologna and Wycombe on free transfers respectively.”

Tyrone flicked a few pages on to continue. “These outgoings mean that I will be looking intently on two goalkeepers, centre-backs and left-backs, wingers on either side and one forward for the new season.

“In goal, I would like Sam Johnstone as a key target, with a selection of others as back-ups.

“I am looking towards Jay Dasilva for our starting left-back choice. Rob Dickie is also my key target for our centre-back choices.

“Joe Lolley has been placed on the transfer list at Nottingham Forest, so I will be looking at him over the next few weeks and Andre Green is another player that interests me following last season.

“Strikers aren’t as much of a priority, but Dwight Gayle has always looked good in my eyes. If he becomes readily available and we do have some cash left, I’d like to speak to him about the possibility of bringing him here.

“Overall, I expect to be spending the entire transfer budget this summer. Mason Bennett, Tom Bradshaw and Jón Daði Böðvarsson have all been placed on the transfer list, so hopefully we take in at least £4million from them.” Tyrone finished matters on the first-team.

Berylson began again. “Thank you, Tyrone. We have been looking into your suggestions and more will become clearer later down the line. With regards to aims this season, we have mutually agreed with management that we can accept relegation this year, if it comes to it. However, if that is the case, we don’t want it to be a brutal affair, like Derby County or Blackpool.”

The board nodded in agreement again. From then, Tyrone didn’t have much involvement in the meeting and a lot was discussed on the corporate side such as sponsors, debts and merchandise.

Seb: You're spot on, the whole basis of the club is about to shift with this one result. We have a long way to go before we can truly celebrate ourselves as a solidified Premier League club, from the on-field player to the financial side but it's a great start.
MidKnightDreary: Thank you! It's a great achievement :D
Tango: Gotta keep up quick here ;) I was terrified of continuing the bottlejob into the play-offs, but god am I thankful now!
"Tyrone flicked a few pages on to continue. “These outgoings mean that I will be looking intently on two goalkeepers, centre-backs and left-backs, wingers on either side and one forward for the new season."

or, with fewer words:

an entire team
I get some sleep and wake up to find out you made it to the promised land! Well done mate, a huge achievement, and if people were scared of Leeds being promoted... they must be bricking it now that Millwall will be visiting their stadiums.

Some interesting transfer targets that you have, and I'm glad that you're going to keep your faith with Jed Wallace. I'm hopeful that you can get Jay Dasilva and Andre Green, as they're both players that I had some success with in previous editions of the game.

Johnstone the first in at Millwall

12th July 2021
Newly-promoted Millwall have made their first new signing as Sam Johnstone joins from West Bromwich Albion.

Millwall renewed the loans of Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore for their first Premier League season, but Johnstone is the first new face through the door for the new season.

The 28-year-old Manchester United academy graduate arrives at The Den for a fee of £2million following West Brom’s immediate relegation to the Championship.

Johnstone has been a key player for West Brom over the past three years with 127 league appearances to his name.

In this time, he kept a total of 31 clean sheets, having finished 2nd with the Baggies in 2019/20 and 18th in the Premier League last season.

Millwall let go of their starting goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski for £550,000 to Seattle Sounders in March this year, letting Frank Fielding take over goalkeeping duties for the remainder as the 33-year-old helped pave the Lions’ way to the Premier League.

Fielding, 33, has been released this summer, with the club thanking him for his efforts during the final two months of the season.

Tango: :)) it's good to be specific I guess!
James: The top-flight is having hell on with those sort of teams :P Wallace has done tremendously well and was a key part of last season so I'm hoping to see more of the same in the Prem. Dasilva and Green will be costly, but I hope that they deliver the goods if they do come in.
let's hope Johnstone doesn't get relegated again, right?
Great to see the board are really backing you this season with that budget. The new look backroom team also looks very strong especially with Barrett finally leaving. In terms of getting Parrott and Zohore back, I think that is massive going into the Premier League. On top of this getting your number one target in goal, is a great start to the summer business.

Busy day concludes as Millwall sign six on same day

26th June 2021
After two weeks without any transfer business, The Den exploded with six new arrival announcements in 12 hours.

At 10am, Dwight Gayle was the first announced with Tyrone Henry spending £2.3M on the Newcastle forward following his transfer listing at St. James’ Park.

The 31-year-old signed for the club under Rafa Benitez’s time in charge following relegation from the Premier League. He was able to fire West Brom into the Championship Play-Offs in 2018/19 before returning to become a squad player at Newcastle under Steve Bruce.

Last season Gayle only managed to make five substitute appearances in the Premier League, scoring one goal as Miguel Almirón, Callum Wilson and Joelinton made their way ahead of him in the pecking order.

Andre Green was announced at lunchtime, joining from Queens Park Rangers for an initial £8.75M, rising to £11.75M depending on performance clauses.

The 23-year-old can play on either wing and impressed at Loftus Road last season with 7 goals in 34 Championship matches.

Green is Millwall’s record signing and is said to be delighted with joining Tyrone Henry at The Den.

Daniel Barlaser was announced on the club Twitter account at 2pm, just one season after his £600K move from Newcastle to Rotherham.

Despite struggling with Rotherham United in the Championship last year, he helped steer the club to safety by scoring 4 and assisting 8 times in 41 appearances.

He joins Millwall for an initial £3M, rising to £3.6M depending on clauses and is said to be a replacement for Ryan Woods who returned to Stoke City following his loan spell last season.

Tyrone Henry made his first addition to the back line by completing the £2.4M (£2.9M) deal bringing another Queens Park Rangers player to the club, as Rob Dickie signed a three-year deal.

Dickie impressed with the step up from League One with Oxford United, to the Championship with Queens Park Rangers last season. He made 42 appearances and added 4 goals to the team’s tally, proving his quality from set-pieces.

Millwall fans and journalists expect to see more action with the defence following the departures of Alex Pearce, Murray Wallace and Matty Pearson at the end of their contracts.

Millwall managed to secure the services of transfer-listed Joe Lolley from Nottingham Forest for a cut-price deal of £3.8M, rising to £4.6M depending on performance clauses.

Lots of clubs were interested in the right-winger as soon as his availability was made public knowledge, but with Millwall’s status as a Premier League club and the attraction of playing under Tyrone Henry, the Lions were able to fend off any competition.

Lolley was a key player for Forest last year, featuring 40 times in the league with 3 goals and 3 assists.

Following the news of Sam Johnstone’s £2M arrival from West Bromwich Albion, Jon McLaughlin has been brought in from Rangers as a back-up for a fee of £425K.

Starting at Harrogate Town, McLaughlin’s career has taken an unusual path up the tiers, moving to Bradford City, Burton Albion, Hearts, Sunderland before ending up at the Scottish Premiership’s runners-up.

He will take the number 12 shirt at Millwall.

The new signings have given hope to the Millwall fans at the end of their preseason campaign after previous concerns about having to take on the Premier League elites with one of the slimmest squads in the nation.

Tango: We can only hope at this point :P
Seb: Parrott is only going to get better, it's just a shame we'll likely never have him permanently! Johnstone is a solid option so I'm glad we could get him.
Some good signings out there, as it is required to hopefully take the jump in level needed to remain at the PL. Good luck
A number of signings that would be impressive in the second tier. Whether they are capable of making the step-up to the Premier League remains to be seen. Johnstone is the only arrival that has a decent level of experience. Interested to see how this plays out.
Hmmm, I'm not totally sold on some of the signings you've made if I'm honest, but I applaud you for attempting to keep your squad as British as possible. Whether or not it's done you any favours in terms of survival: that remains to be seen.
Some recognisable new faces. Hopefully Dickie will be solid in the rear of your team.
Some interesting signings for sure. Gayle has always seemingly been a great Championship striker but never (apart from one game in particular) managed it in the Premier League. You had your targets and managed to get them in though, which is a good sign and now Tyrone needs them to prove they were the right players to bring in.

Millwall bolster squad with Bristol City additions

27th July 2021
Millwall have continued their summer spending by bringing in Bristol City duo Jay Dasilva and Liam Walsh.

Dasilva, 23, has been signed for an initial £8M transfer fee, to rise by £3M depending on clauses relating to the left-back’s performance in the Premier League in the coming season.

The fee paid out for Dasilva is Millwall’s second largest deal of the summer, just £750,000 less than the signing of Andre Green from Queens Park Rangers.

With the departure of Murray Wallace and expiry of Scott Malone’s loan spell, Dasilva is expected to become the Lions’ starting left-back having been handed the number 3 shirt for the upcoming season.

Over the course of his three-year spell at Ashton Gate, Dasilva made 87 appearances in all competitions, assisting 11 times over that period since arriving from Chelsea initially on loan before paying a £2M fee to sign the player permanently in 2019.

Liam Walsh joins for a fee of £5M, rising to £6M depending on performance clauses, ending his four-year stay at Ashton Gate.

Walsh, 23, was merely a squad player at Bristol City in his first couple of years. However, a loan move to Coventry City in 2019/20 helped guide them to League One promotion, scoring 5 goals and assisting 7 times.

He returned to Bristol City as a key player last season, making 39 league appearances and adding 6 goals and 6 assists, making him one of the club’s most creative players.

Tango: I think that they are all mainly bottom-end PL/top-end Championship level signings, I just hope that we have got the balance right!
Scott: Certainly a leaf out of Burnley's book, but on a much bigger scale :P I think they'll be able to do a job here in the top flight.
James: Brexit FC in full flow ;)
Justice: If only he's as good as defending as you are with these gags...
Seb: You're right about Gayle, but we do have both Zohore and Parrott in front of him (I would assume) in the pecking order. It's a very sub-standard team, but it's difficult to manage a £35m budget when you have a mid-table Championship team needing a lot of readjusting for the top level.
two very good additions. It's always nice to be able to count on players that are good and can still improve
Two handy signings, they both look like they'll hold their own in the upcoming season. It's quite a lot of money to have spent on a fullback [compared to the other signings], so there'll be a bit more pressure on Dasilva than other signings in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing how you handle the jump.
