Carlisle face their first pre-season friendly against a team higher in the English football pyramid than themselves.

Carlisle are one man down as Gary Madine is out with a dead leg.

"CL: This will be the team's first tough test, coming out with even a draw would show what we can do. If we win or draw this however we will reap no rewards, we need to keep focused on the League 1 season."

Carlisle managed a well fought 2-2 draw against Portsmouth, the match did come at a cost however.

Carlisle struck the first blow when Portsmouth defender Sam Magri fouled Francois Zoko in the box. John Guidetti confidently stepped up and placed it into the top left corner.

Dave Kitson managed to equalise for the away side just 5 minutes later.

Ali Fuseini put the Blues ahead again with a goal 12 minutes after the restart.

Former Arsenal striker Nwanko Kanu hit the final goal of the game on the 72nd minute.

Sadly the penalty taker John Guidetti suffered shin splints during the game which meant the injury would affect him longer than his loan period, he was expected to be out for about 6 weeks, Carlisle have recently terminated his loan deal.

"CL: It's very bad news about John's injury and because of the length we have been forced to terminate his loan, the lad doesn't deserve it and we hope he makes a quick recovery and we wish him well for the future."

Carlisle will face Newcastle in Carlisle's 2nd last pre-season friendly.

"CL: Newcastle are an even tougher team than Portsmouth and are always a tough team to beat whether you are Barrow or Manchester United. I hope we can get through this game without any serious injuries."

There will be many people in shock today, not least the Carlisle and Newcastle managers.

Carlisle completely outplayed Newcastle and pulled off a massive 6-1 victory against their Premier League opponents.

Michael Mifsud bagged himself another hat trick which helped the Cumbrians on their way.

Carlisle got the first goal when Peter Murphy crossed in hard and along the ground which Craig Curran picked up then laid it up to Mifsud who put it in the bottom corner despite former Carlisle loanee Krul's best efforts.

Carlisle's second also came from Mifsud as he and Curran exchanged passes and Mifsud executed a wonderful chip from the edge of the are which looped over Krul and ended up in the net.

Kevan Hurst scored Carlisle's third as Peter Murphy crossed from the byline and Hurst headed in on the far post.

Haris Vuckic tried to instigate a comeback when he broke through Carlisle's defense and slid it under Gulacsi.

Sol Campbell was sent off for a 2nd bookable offense just 8 minutes later

The comeback attempt was to no avail however as Mifsud ran across the field and burst into the area and was tripped by Stephen Folan, Francois Zoko stepped up and hammered it into the top corner out of the reach of then goalkeeper Jak Alnwick.

The 5th came when Hogg passed to Kavanagh who laid it off for Zoko who played in Mifsud who slotted it past Alnwick for his hat-trick.

Carlisle's 6th came in stunning fashion as Kavanagh fired a rocket into the top left corner from just outside of the right corner of the box.

"CL: It's amazing really, i know Newcastle played what was basically a reserve team but that's a team which could compete in the Premier League. I am so proud of the entire team for not only putting six past them, but restricting them to only 1 goal, if we play like that every time we'll do well in the league."

"CL:This result proves that you can never get complacent in football, if you do you will get bad results, like we had today. One excellent result (Newcastle), One very good result (Portsmouth) and one bad result (Workington) in the last 3 friendlies, i have seen that the team is capable of being both relegated and promoted, fingers crossed they put in performances which results in the latter this season"

This was the last pre-season friendly, League 1 will kick off soon!

Carlisle will face their first game of their League 1 campaign as they travel to Yeovil Town.

A pre-match conference was held with the Carlisle boss

"J: How do you think your season will start against this Yeovil side"

"CL: Although people may expect us to win, any side is a tough test so i think the main thing is playing well and not getting complacent."

"J: Are you excited about the new season?"

"CL: Absolutely, the football season is always excellent to be involved in and to watch, it should be another great endeavour"

"J: Attack or Defense against Yeovil today?"

"CL: Both, you can be as good as you want to be in attack but if you are not solid at the back you'll be leaking goals"

"J: After seeing your team face the pre-season, are you confident about your best 11?"

"CL: Not really, there was a lot of injuries during the friendlies especially the injury to John Guidetti, if the players perform well in training then they'll be in serious contention for the team"

"J:The league cup draw was made a few days ago, do you agree that Sheffield United is a tough task?"

"CL: It's harder than what we wanted but it's possible to beat them, we got a draw against Portsmouth so i think we may have a chance."

"J: What do you think of Yeovil's key man, Andrew Williams?"

"CL: He's a fantastic player on his day, if we can contain him and he doesn't play to his potential then we should be good, James (Chester) should be able to handle him"

"J: Do you agree with the media's opinion that Frank Simek will be the key to your success in League 1?"

"CL: Not really no, Frank is a quality player and we're lucky to have him but one player does not a team make, everyone else is just as important"

"J: You have been linked with a move for Karim Benounes, is this true"

"CL: We're already stretching the wage budget and we just couldn't afford to pay his wages."

"J: Who's going to win the title this season?"

"CL: Ha ha, that's not something i can answer at this stage."

"CL: That is all"
