New owners, new era for Adelaide United

4 June 2023

Adelaide United's takeover has been finalised, with a local consortium spending $6.3 million to pry ownership away from Dutch pair Cor Adriaanse and Rob van Eck.

Ex-Adelaide United legend Bruce Djite is the public face of the consortium that is believed to contain some of the cities' wealthiest figures, looking to capitalise on the success - and more importantly, the homegrown success - that the Reds have been building towards in the past few seasons.

In an increasingly uncertain commercial landscape for the A-League, the club has turned heavily to it's youth and NPL squads, with several talented prospects breaking through last season for first team minutes, including the likes of Bernardo, Alexandar Popovic and Ethan Alagich. The new owners are expected to continue this transfer policy, and there will be pressure on Carl Veart to find a replacement for outgoing talisman Craig Goodwin, who has signed for Saudi club Al-Wehda after winning the Johnny Warren Medal in 2022/23.

Adelaide releases Veart, appoints local unknown

6 June 2023

Adelaide United's new ownership has sensationally removed Carl Veart from the head coaching role, appointing local manager Hugo Montgomery in his place.

The club released a press statement earlier this morning announcing that Veart's contract had been terminated amidst rumours that the club is looking to employ an aggressive 'homegrown' transfer policy.

The 53 year old Adelaide local guided the Reds to a third place finish in the home-and-away season and a semi-final berth in the Finals Series, and was thought to be secure in his role for the upcoming season.

Local manager Hugo Montgomery, with NPL experience at Adelaide Blue Eagles and Sturt Lions, has been swiftly announced as Veart's replacement, with more information expected to come out of the Adelaide United camp as to the reasoning behind this drastic news in the coming days.

Djite: "The club is adapting to commercial realities"

7 June 2023

New Adelaide United chairman and former player Bruce Djite spoke to the media at Coopers Stadium this afternoon, answering questions about the new ownership as well as the sensational decision to sack Carl Veart.

Djite, who made over 150 appearances for the Reds, said that the 'commercial realities' of the A-League meant that the club was looking to establish a sustainable business model as well as an 'aggressively homegrown mentality' in order to both keep the club financially afloat and bolster its appeal with the local community.

He insisted that the new ownership put forth this philosophy to outgoing manager Carl Veart and mutually agreed to terminate his contract when Veart disagreed with the new direction. This new direction is expected to include a new 'cantera'-like transfer policy with the club wholly focused on developing and fielding local, home-grown talent from South Australia.

Club Overview
Adelaide United Football Club is a professional men's soccer club located in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. The club was one of the eight founding members of the A-League Men and have competed in it concurrently since its formation, under licence from the Australian Professional Leagues.
Established in 2003, the club was formed to replace Adelaide City and West Adelaide in the final season of the National Soccer League, and has remained the only professional club from South Australia. Adelaide United's home ground is at Coopers Stadium in the inner north-western suburb of Hindmarsh. Adelaide United won their first silverware in 2006, when they became premiers of the inaugural A-League season, finishing top of the ladder over Sydney FC by seven points. In 2008, the club became the first Australian side to reach the final of the AFC Champions League, being defeated by Gamba Osaka 0–5 across two legs and finishing in fifth place in the 2008 Club World Cup. The club won the first edition of the FFA Cup in 2014 with a 1–0 win at home over Perth Glory. Their first A-League title would come in 2016, defeating Western Sydney Wanderers 3–1 at Adelaide Oval in front of 50,119 spectators, the largest home crowd the club has played a competitive match in front of. Adelaide would become the first club to win back-to-back FFA Cups, defeating Sydney FC 2–1 in 2018 and Melbourne City 4–1 in 2019. The club remains the most successful team to ever play in the competition.

Adelaide United has a rivalry with Melbourne Victory, stemming from numerous altercations between players and coaches, as well as the two clubs' competitiveness in the early seasons of the A-League, culminating with Grand Final clashes in 2007 and 2009, both of which went the way of Victory. Adelaide United formerly held the record for the largest winning margin in an A-League Men match, having defeated North Queensland Fury 8–1 at home on 21 January 2011. The game was also the first and only instance where two players from the same team, Marcos Flores and Sergio van Dijk, achieved hat-tricks in a single match. They later matched their own record when they beat Newcastle Jets 7–0 at home almost exactly four years later.

In recent years, Adelaide United has grown a reputation of developing young players and selling them to overseas clubs.

Mass exodus at Adelaide United

30 June 2023

Isaias, widely considered to be one of the Reds' greatest ever servants, is one of several players who have been released by the club as they embark on a new transfer and development policy.

Isaias' compatriots Javi Lopez and Juande will also leave the club, as well as Hiroshi Ibusuki and Zach Clough, leaving the club with no visa slots in use.

Clough has reportedly been sold for a nominal fee to League One side Peterborough, while Ben Halloran (to Beijing Guoan) will also net the club a small transfer fee.

The other players who have been released or had their contracts terminated are strikers George Blackwood and Asad Kasumovic, defender Nick Ansell and goalkeeper James Delianov, leaving the clubs with only homegrown players as promised by the new ownership and new manager Hugo Montgomery.

Introducing the Next Generation

As part of the club's continuing focus on youth development, we are proud to announce the elevation of a further six prospects from the NPL side to play senior football in 2023/24.

Last season, we saw the emergence of a number of future stars with Ethan Alagich, Alexandar Popovic, Bernardo, Jonny Yull, Panashe Madanha and Nestory Irankunda all transitioning to senior football, and with another six NPL graduates to join them, we believe that they will form the nucleus of our side for years to come.

Young goalkeepers Ethan Cox and Steven Hall will deputise and learn from Joe Gauci, with both showing strong form at NPL level last season. A trio of promising defenders in Giuseppe Bovalina, Bailey O'Neil and the versatile Panagiotis Kikianis will see plenty of opportunities throughout the season and we also welcome forward Musa Toure, the youngest brother of Al Hassan and Mohammed, both of which have progressed from junior level, to the Adelaide United senior squad, and then to opportunities in Europe.

Reds turn to NPL talent to bolster defensive stocks

10 July 2023

Adelaide United have announced the signings of Allan Welsh (pictured) and Dion Kirk from Adelaide Comets and Croydon Kings respectively in order to boost their defensive depth for the upcoming season.

Both are very experienced players in the NPL SA competition, and they also both spent time in the Adelaide United youth set-up as academy prospects. Welsh has A-League experience with Newcastle Jets, although his last game in the competition was back in 2015. The pair will cover the losses of the likes of Nick Ansell, Josh Cavallo and Harry van der Saag.

The transfers are indicative of the club's new homegrown approach, and bodes well for other talented players plying their trade semi-professionally in Adelaide.

Borrello signs as Adelaide's marquee player

12 July 2023

Adelaide United's new ownership have acted swiftly to secure the signing of Brandon Borrello as the club's new marquee player, replacing the outgoing Craig Goodwin.

Multiple A-League and overseas clubs were monitoring the 28 year old Socceroo after he mutually terminated his contract with the Western Sydney Wanderers, but the Reds were able to secure his signature in a major coup for the club's fortunes.

Borrello started his junior football with Modbury Jets in the north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide before moving to Brisbane Roar's academy, and the club is reportedly extremely happy to have secured the services of such a talented player who fulfills the club's transfer policy of using homegrown talent.

After the loss of Ben Halloran and Zach Clough, Borrello will likely start alongside wonderkid Nestory Irankunda on the wings for AUFC and provide valuable leadership to the club's stock of promising young wingers such as Bernardo, Panasha Madanha and Harry Crawford.

Reds 'wrap up' transfer business with Malik and Costanzo

21 July 2023

Hugo Montgomery has reportedly 'wrapped up' his transfer business early in the window after Adelaide United completed the signings of Osama Malik and Dom Costanzo.

Malik returns to the A-League after a stint in India with Odisha, and returns to Coopers Stadium after seven years spent predominantly with Melbourne City and Perth Glory. The Adelaide Croatia Raiders product will provide cover across the entire defensive line as well as in midfield and adds some much needed experience to a relatively young squad.

Meanwhile, Dom Costanzo is also returning to the club but without the pedigree of Malik and with plenty of determination to make good at his second chance.

The 21 year old winger failed to make his senior debut with the club across three seasons in the system, departing at the end of 2021 to play NPL football in South Australia with Croydon Kings and then in Sydney with Marconi Stallions.

He also joins the increasing number of Reds who are father-son prospects, something of a new trend in the A-League, with his father Angelo Costanzo once playing alongside Richie Alagich (father of Ethan) and Cassio (father of Bernardo).

2023/24 Season Hub

Adelaide United's 2023/24 campaign will see a new transfer policy and new manager in Hugo Montgomery as the club invests heavily in its already fruitful youth development pathway. A squad of entirely homegrown talent has been assembled, and although some believe that the club will inevitably slide backwards with the loss of experience, Montgomery is hoping he can take the team one step further than the semi final berth they reached in 2022/23.

2023 Australia Cup

Australia's domestic cup competition is unique in that it's played entirely across the pre-season of its top domestic flight. The (real life) reason for this is because the lower, state-based semi professional competitions play during the Australian winter, offset from the A-League, although the realities of the FM database mean that this isn't the case in this save.

A-League sides compete in the competition from the first round, although teams are randomly drawn from elsewhere in Australia which can lead to some lopsided scorelines, as you'll soon see.

Adelaide United are the most successful team in the Australia Cup's history, winning 3 titles including the inaugural final in 2014. It provides a good opportunity to introduce new players against semi-professional or even amateur opponents, and a preview of who the strongest A-League sides might be once the season starts in October.

The Reds fielded seven teenagers in the starting XI but still blew Riverway JCU off the park with a monstrous 17-0 scoreline. Young striker Musa Toure feasted with an extraordinary seven goals, while his partner Luka Jovanovic also chipped in with a hat-trick and young winger turned right back Panashe Madanha was adjudged best on ground with his 4 assists."

"Adelaide United got the chance to play in front of their home fans for the first time in 2023/24, hosting Macarthur FC in the quarter final. Much like the round of 16, the Reds looked in complete control against A-League opposition, racking up 18 shots and 11 on target against experienced keeper Filip Kurto. Manager Comments

"While it was disappointing to fall at the semi final stage for the second season in a row for the club, overall I was pleased with our cup run as we got put up against three A-League opponents in a row and comfortably accounted for two of them, while also arguably being the better side in our loss to Sydney FC. We had a bit of rotation due to injuries and international call-ups so a few young players like Steven Hall and Giuseppe Bovalina got a solid run and looked solid for senior level."

Player of the Campaign

MUSA TOURE
4 games, 9 goals, 7.95 average rating
"Hard to go past Musa Toure as our player of the cup campaign, with the 17 year old striker bagging a phenomenal 7 goal haul in the first round before scoring twice in subsequent games. He's a player making the step-up from youth football and following in the footsteps of his older brothers who have both represented the Reds and both now playing in Europe."

Melbourne rivals considered front-runners ahead of A-League season

28 September 2023

Bookmakers have Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City as the clear favourites to take out top honours in the A-League this season, with a sizeable gap back to third favourite Western Sydney and the rest of the competition.

City have been a powerhouse of the league in recent seasons, winning the last three premiership as well as the 2021 championship, while some off-season additions for Victory leads the market to believe that they will be the team to beat in 2023/24 as they look to break a six-year title drought.

Western Sydney Wanderers are the only other team priced under $10 for the title, boasting some of the league's most highly touted imports in Marcelo, Jorrit Hendrix and Marcus Antonsson, with Adelaide United ($26), Central Coast Mariners and Sydney FC ($51) as the remainder of the predicted top six.

A-League Title Betting Odds
Melbourne Victory $1.90 Macarthur FC $101
Melbourne City $2.90 Brisbane Roar $151
Western Sydney Wanderers $8 Perth Glory $151
Adelaide United $26 Western United $251
Central Coast Mariners $51 Wellington Phoenix $501
Sydney FC $51 Newcastle Jets $701

Youth teams prepare for their campaign

10 October 2023

As the senior side prepares for their A-League season opener against the Central Coast Mariners, so do the youth squads at the club who will compete once again in the National Premier League South Australia competition as well as the Y-League.

Our NPL side will begin their campaign against Croydon Kings on the 15th of October and will look to improve upon their 4th placed finish last season. The competition is considered as strong as it has ever been, with some outstanding semi-professional footballers joining local clubs in recent weeks. Campbelltown City and NE MetroStars are considered to be strong favourites for the title.

Meanwhile the club will also compete in a resumption of the Y-League, contested between the youth sides of A-League clubs in a much shorter format. The youth team will play 8 matches in a five-team group stage before the winner of the two separate groups compete in a Grand Final for the title.

Montgomery: "It's important to set the tone early"

19 October 2020

New manager Hugo Montgomery spoke to the press ahead of Adelaide United's season opener at Coopers Stadium tomorrow night, acknowledging some of the criticism around the club's transfer policy and the need to prove doubters wrong.

"We're aware of the external noise around some of the decisions made over the off-season, including my appointment, so we know that we'll have to make a good impression from the get-go."

"I'm pretty confident in the group we've assembled, I think our new signings have gelled well and we're super excited about some of the young guys like Musa [Toure] and Luka [Jovanovic] who have been really good in the Australia Cup campaign."

The Reds host reigning A-League champions Central Coast tomorrow night in Adelaide as the standalone season opener for the division. The Reds are still missing Jay Barnett with his long term hamstring strain and will also be without Lachlan Barr with a shin injury.
