King Yengi

24 February 2024

Adelaide United's new striker Tete Yengi has continued his incredible return to the A-League with five goals against Western Sydney at Coopers Stadium this evening.

The 23 year old target forward played nine fruitless games with the Newcastle Jets in 2021 but his second coming in the league has been nothing short of brilliant, with ten goals in seven appearances, enough to be sixth in the Golden Boot race after two months.

The younger brother of ex-Red and Wanderer Kusini Yengi, Tete's Ipswich Town venture never took off and after loan spells in Finland and the Football League, he appears to have found a rhythm at Coopers Stadium.

March 2024

"After a dominant February, we needed to continue getting wins to challenge for the premiership as well as giving ourselves a ticket to the A-League semi finals. Our backline had solidifed a little while our attackers were firing on all cylinders so we were looking to keep things rolling."

Manager's Comments
"Our unbeaten streak continues albeit with a hiccup against Western United, the only thing between us and a seven game winning run. We've not only hit first but even have a five point gap back to second, so it's our premiership to lose."

Alagich pens four-year deal

22 March 2024

Adelaide United are thrilled to announce that Ethan Alagich has signed a four-year contract extension that will take his deal through to the end of the 2027/28 season.

The 19 year old midfielder has become an extremely valuable cog in midfield with seven assists and four goals from seventeen appearances in the A-League. An Adelaide native, he's been one of the best proponents of the club's local, youth-first philosophy.

Ethan will continue to follow in the footsteps of his father Richie who played 89 games for the club from 2003 to 2008. The younger Alagich has now recorded 39 appearances and will no doubt hope to surpass his dad in the coming seasons.

The club has also secured scholarship extensions for Giuseppe Bovalina, Panagiotis Kikianis and Bailey O'Neil.

April 2024

"After two months of excellent form, the premiership was ours to lose in April with four games to seal our fate. Heading into the month with a five point lead over the Mariners, the trip to Gosford loomed as a potential title-winning game."

Manager's Comments
"We wrap up our regular season with a fifteen game unbeaten streak and the premiership in hand, a magnificent achievement in this first season off the back of some brilliant performances from our young stars. The draw against Brisbane Roar was disappointing on paper, but now all attention turns towards the upcoming Finals Series.

Adelaide United crowned premiers

21 April 2024

A resounding 4-1 win in Gosford has delivered Adelaide United their third A-League Men's premiership, the culmination of a brilliant run of form which has seen them win fourteen games in a row.

Goals from Musa Toure, Tete Yengi, Ethan Alagich and Dom Costanzo downed the Mariners who were the only team with a mathematical chance of pipping the Reds but from as early as March it seemed no one would be able to slow Adelaide down.

The mid-season signing of Yengi heralded a major change in fortunes for Hugo Montgomery's side, with the former Ipswich Town striker scoring a phenomenal 16 goals in 15 appearances during the club's unbeaten run, and was ably supported by the competition's best attacking unit in Brandon Borrello, Nestory Irankunda, Musa Toure and Luka Jovanovic.

Adelaide United will go into the Finals Series as heavy favourites for the championship, looking to win the Grand Final for just the second time in their history and emulate the vaulted 2015/16 squad which won the Premiership/Championship double.

A-League Finals Series drawn

29 April 2024

With twenty-six regular season rounds complete, six clubs will compete for the A-League championship across the country in May.

Adelaide United, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory, Wellington Phoenix, Sydney FC and Macarthur FC will all vie for the coveted trophy, with the all-conquering Reds and reigning champions Central Coast the betting favourites heading into the series.

The finals will kick off on May 3rd with Sydney FC travelling across the Tasman to face Wellington Phoenix in the first elimination final, while on the following Sunday AAMI Park will host Melbourne Victory and Macarthur FC in the other elimination final. The two winners will progress to the two-legged semi finals to face the Mariners and Adelaide United respectively.

After significant fan backlash, the Grand Final will be hosted by the highest seeded participant after last year's Grand Final was held at CommBank Stadium in Sydney.

Young Reds win first NPL title

2 May 2024

Adelaide United have been crowned champions of the 2023/24 NPL South Australia season, after a 3-1 win over Adelaide Comets secured the title.

Manager Airton Andreoli and captain Ryan White lifted the trophy in front of around 500 fans at the State Centre of Football after a campaign in which Adelaide United led from start to finish.

Campbelltown City and Croydon Kings proved the toughest challenges for the Reds but both ultimately fell short, with Campbelltown finishing seven points adrift of United. Young winger Harry Crawford has been named the competition MVP and awarded the Sergio Melta Medal, while Jake Porter (18 goals) beat his teammate Ryan White (13) to the Golden Boot.

Victory, Sky Blues advance to semi finals

5 May 2024

A brace from Johnny Warren Medal favourite Chris Ikonomidis sealed a 3-1 comeback win for Melbourne Victory in today's second elimination final over Macarthur FC and booked their spot in a two-legged Original Rivalry semi final against Adelaide United.

The Victory will join Sydney FC, who shut out the Phoenix in Wellington on Friday night, in the A-League's final four with the ties set to be played across the next two weekends. A solitary Rhyan Grant goal was enough to send the Sky Blues through to face the Central Coast Mariners.

Opinion: All about managing expectations for the Reds

8 May 2024

Adelaide United's long unbeaten streak will add pressure for the young side ahead of the semi final clash, and it will be a big test for rookie manager Hugo Montgomery to guide his cohort through a tricky fortnight.

Being drawn against Melbourne Victory will also undoubtedly add another facet to the tie, with such a long and fierce history between the two sides; the famous 6-0 drubbing in the 2007 Grand Final, while nearly two decades ago, still lingers in the footballing conscience of this city. The Reds have the green over their biggest rivals this season, winning at home and away, but it will be brought up another notch as usual in the finals.

Part of Adelaide's remarkable success this season has come down to some brilliant performances from young players such as Nestory Irankunda, Musa Toure and Ethan Alagich. But on the flipside, the lack of experience in situations like this is something Montgomery will have to navigate over the next three weeks, and he will lean heavily on experienced A-League campaigners like Osama Malik, Brandon Borrello and Ryan Kitto.

Match Report: Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United

A-League Semi Final First Leg | 12 May 2024 | AAMI Park, Melbourne
"After playing three times in the regular season, with two wins for us and a draw, we came up against our biggest rivals Melbourne Victory in the first leg of the A-League semi final, looking to continue our terrific unbeaten streak. There's plenty of history for us in this fixture in A-League finals history, but seldom good for us, so this was a massive chance to even the psychological ledger on their home turf."

Manager's Verdict
"What a brilliant, emphatic win - not even the first time we've trounced Victory 4-0 at AAMI Park this season. It took us a while to get going with an errant tackle from Da Silva giving us a penalty to bank into half time, but in the second half we were all over them and deserved the final scoreline. Tete Yengi did what he does best with a towering back post header but it was our wing play that really impressed me towards the end of the match. We clearly had more in the tank, a testament to our fitness, as the likes of Bernardo and Kitto kept finding gaps and throughballs to help us run up the score."

'Unstoppable' Reds seem destined for A-League glory

13 May 2024

Adelaide United's unbeaten streak was extended to sixteen games and their spot in the A-League Grand Final all but sewn up with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park last night.

Eleven of those sixteen matches have been wins in a dominance not seen since Patrick Kisnorbo's all-conquering Melbourne City side, and the Reds look every chance of emulating that team and securing an A-League premiership-championship double.

A 96th minute winner from Jing Reec in the other semi final first leg will see Central Coast Mariners take a 2-1 advantage back to Gosford, as they look to win back-to-back championships and write their own names in the history books as one of the A-League's most vaunted sides. The Mariners led the A-League ladder for much of the season before being overtaken by a rampaging United in the final weeks.

Match Report: Adelaide United v Melbourne Victory

A-League Semi Final Second Leg | 19 May 2024 | Coopers Stadium, Adelaide
"With a 4-0 lead from the first leg in Melbourne, it would only take a complete and utter breakdown to lose our spot in the final, so we headed into the second leg just looking to be solid. The temptation is always there to try and put the foot down in front of the home fans obviously, but I had faith we could get the job done in Adelaide."

Manager's Verdict
"We've officially booked our Grand Final place and secured a fourth win in five meetings against the Victory. A couple of goals conceded at the end wasn't ideal but by that point the tie was obviously long dead and I have faith Gauci and the rest of our backline won't dwell too long on that. Some brilliant attacking play that should hold us in good stead if we can replicate it next weekend."

Victory sack Popovic

20 May 2024

Melbourne Victory have parted ways with head coach Tony Popovic hours after their 7-2 aggregate loss to Adelaide United in the A-League semi final.

The 50 year old had been in charge at the club for nearly three years but failed to deliver A-League silverware during his tenure which is believed to be the main reason for his early termination. Melbourne Victory were billed as favourites for the A-League title heading into the season with a strong cohort of international players including Rui Marchan and Roderick Miranda but finished a distant third in the regular season and have now been dispatched by Adelaide United in the semi final.

Well-travelled Italian manager Andrea Stramaccioni is early favourite for the job while Mumbai City's Hiroshi Miyazawa and ex-Victory stalwart Mark Milligan - on the coaching team at Adelaide United - have also been linked.

Sky Blues pull off extraordinary comeback in Gosford

20 May 2024

Sydney FC have secured their spot in the A-League Grand Final after a remarkable turnaround in the second leg against the Mariners.

The Sky Blues will travel to Adelaide to take on the Reds next Sunday after a stunning second half performance saw them overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg at Allianz Stadium.

Robert Mak scored a penalty in the second minute to equalise the fixture before Central Coast's Harry Steele fired back with a long range effort in the 35th minute.

After half time however, Sydney ran rampant with goals from Luke Brattan, Nathan Amanatidis and a late sealer from January signing Mitchell Duke giving them a 4-1 win in the match and a 5-3 scoreline on aggregate.

Sydney finished fifth in the premiership race but have now knocked out Wellington and Central Coast, two of the more fancied teams throughout the regular season. The Mariners will be ruing a season which saw them lead the table for the vast majority of the season but miss out on the premiership to Adelaide and now miss out on a chance to defend their championship title.

Adelaide abuzz with A-League Grand Final hype

22 May 2024

Ticket sales have already been exhausted for the A-League Grand Final on Saturday night at Coopers Stadium, with a full house of 15,000 expected in attendance and many more watching on at various fan zones set up around the city.

The Reds have become a major draw in town over the past few months with their exciting attacking football and long unbeaten streak swelling support. The prospect of winning just their second A-League championship and their first since 2016 has seen the city don red despite May being deep into the AFL season.

The club held an open training session at Coopers Stadium yesterday with over 3,000 in attendance as fans got a chance to see the likes of Brandon Borrello and Benfica-bound Nestory Irankunda prepare for Saturday's match.
