Chapter 2 - The World Around Us

Episode 6 - Who Is Ronnie Whelan?

Some of you readers might be wondering who is Ronnie Whelan? This is who he is:

Ronald Andrew "Ronnie" Whelan is a former Irish association football midfielder, and sometimes defender, who was an integral part of the dominant Liverpool side of the 1980s. He was at the club from 1979 until 1994.

Whelan was born into a family of footballers from Dublin, Ireland; his father, Ronnie Whelan Senior, was an Irish international and a key member of the successful St Patrick's Athletic side of the late 1950s and early 1960s. His brother Paul Whelan played for Bohemian FC and Shamrock Rovers.

Ronnie Junior was a skilful and industrious midfield player, who made his League of Ireland debut for Home Farm on his 16th birthday at Tolka Park.

Whelan was signed for Liverpool by Bob Paisley for a bargain £35,000 on 19 September 1979, a few days before his 18th birthday and made his debut 18 months later, on 3 April 1981, scoring his first goal in the 27th minute of the 3–0 league win over Stoke City at Anfield. This would be Whelan's one and only appearance of the season for the first team, as Whelan spent much of his first few months at the club in the reserves.

The following season Whelan won his place on the left side of the Liverpool midfield, ending the Anfield career of Ray Kennedy and also taking over his No.5 shirt. It was an excellent season for Whelan, as he settled into first team football and helped Liverpool to another League championship. They also retained the League Cup with victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley with Whelan scoring twice in the 3–1 win.

In 1983, Liverpool retained these two trophies and Whelan again scored in the League Cup final, scoring with a long-range shot into the Manchester United net in extra-time to seal a 2–1 win. Whelan then played a major role in Liverpool's treble of League title, League Cup and European Cup of 1984, although he was injured for part of this season.

Whelan switched to a central role following the arrival of England winger John Barnes at Anfield.

An injury to club captain Alan Hansen meant that Whelan spent much of the 1988–89 season as captain of Liverpool, a role he relished as the club progressed to another challenge for a "double". Then the Hillsborough disaster happened, and Whelan played a key role in leading the team on and off the pitch in a difficult time.

Whelan was a regular for the Republic of Ireland, making his debut on 29 April 1981 when he came off the bench in the 63rd minute of the 3–1 victory over Czechoslovakia at Lansdowne Road.

Whelan was part of the Irish side which qualified for the UEFA European Football Championship of 1988 in West Germany. He was in the team which memorably beat England 1–0, and he then scored a spectacular long-range goal in a draw with the USSR. Defeat in the final group game, against eventual champions Netherlands, eliminated Ireland from the competition.

Episode Seven - I Believe In The Future Of This Club!

18th July 2012

Press-Conference At Anfield

Thomas Werner: "We are here today to officialy announce the appointment of Ronnie Whelan as the manager of Liverpool Football Club. Please go ahead and ask him questions."

Keith Riley ( "You stand here today unveiled as the new Liverpool manager. As a big fan of the club, surely this must be a dream come true?"

Me: "I have dreamt of this moment for years. To be appointed is a dream come true but it is a dream that I will not just sit and watch go by. I will try my hardest to succeed."

Andrew Watson (Sky Sports News HD): "You come to a club which has signed several "flops". Will you look to get rid of some of these players to make room for your own signings?"

Me: "I personally would not call these players "flops" as such but they had a hard season where some of them struggled to settle in. But that first season for them is gone and they will be more comfortable this season."

Stephen Power (ESPN): "What are your league expectations for the season?"

Me: "Well I believe that only Champions League qualification will suffice. This is a club that belongs in that competition and we need to get there. Otherwise, we want to make Anfield a fortress. If we can stay unbeaten at home in the league, we are doing well."

Eric Lacey (Eurosport): "What style of football will we be expecting your Liverpool team to play over the course of your managerial adventure?"

Me: "The type that wins matches. I don't believe that football should be played like Barca or like Real Madrid. We will play like Liverpool and we will win games playing like this. We will play the Liverpool Way. We will look to be the better team in attack and defence and win games as a result."

Episode Eight - We Have No Chance

18th July 2012

Colin Pascoe: "That was a nice press-conference earlier Ronnie but we need to get down to business now."

Me: "Thanks and I agree. Ian Ayre left a note on my desk here saying what he expects of us in the league this season and the budgets he would give us."

Colin Pascoe: "This is practically nothing! Who are we supposed to sign with this?"

Me: "I know it isn't much but we will try to sell Joe Cole to make some money and to free up wage space. Hopefully we can get enough together to be able to buy somebody. What do you think of the current team?"

Colin Pascoe: "Here is a team report that I put together:"

Me: "So we need wingers."

Colin Pascoe: "Yeah, we need one winger. We have Downing, Assaidi and Suarez who can play on the wing and Sterling looks like some prospect."

Me: "What about the defence?"

Colin Pascoe: "In centre-back, we have Agger, Skrtel, Carra, Coates and Wilson. Out right we have Johno, Kelly and Flanno. And out left we have Jose and Robbo. So we look sorted there."

Me: "And everywhere else looks solid enough. So we only need a winger."

Episose Nine - Fight For That Inch

18th July 2012

First Team Meeting

Me: "I don't know what to say really. This is the biggest battle of our professional lives. It all comes down to you. Either we play strong as a team or will crumble, inch-by--inch, play-by-play, 'till we're finished. We're in hell right now gentlemen, believe me, and we can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us or we can fight our way back, in to the light. We can climb our way out of hell, one inch at a time.

The inches we need our everywhere around us! On this team, we fight for that inch! We will tear down the walls around us for that inch! We will claw with our teeth and nails for that inch! And when we add up all those inches, that will make the fucking difference between winning and losing! Between living and dieing! In any fight, its the guy that's willing to die who's going to win that inch. Its because I'm still willing to fight and die, for that inch. Because, that's what living is! Its six inches, in front of your face!

Now I can't make you do it, you gotta look at the guy next to you, look in to his eyes. Now I think you will see a guy who will go that inch, you're gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows that when it comes down to it, you're gonna do the same for him. That's a team, gentlemen, and either we heel now, as a team, or we will die.

Episode Ten - Nostalgia

18th July 2012

In Dressing Room In Melwood

Me: "Ok guys, we're going to play a practice match against Rodolfo's (Borrell) boys. These are the tactics we will be using."

"We will play a wide 4-2-3-1 formation. Our back-line will be flat and unpenetrable. Our three midfielders will control that area of the pitch. Our wingers will run the flanks. It is up to the lone striker to finish the chances created for him."

"We will use zonal marking. Our passing needs to be fast and direct and the defence should puch up. Don't be afraid to counter-attack but don't use the off-side trap!"

"Here is the team going out:"

"Go out there and prove a point!"
