LAST 16

"Aston Villa are the first team through to the last 16 of this season's Champions League after their 3-1 win over Marseille at Villa Park last night."

"A brace from Thomas Ince and a goal from Will Hughes put Villa three up before Ryan Shawcross headed in to his own goal to give the French side some consolation."
Georgie Thompson on Sky Sports News

"It's easier than I expected - this Champions League lark."
Jason Connolly

DRAWS, DRAWS AND MORE DRAWS

The 2-0 win over Newcastle was to be Villa's last win as they amazingly go on a run of five successive draws - each ending 1-1!!

The only respite was a fifth consecutive win in the Champions League group - 2-1 over Wolfsburg and a penalty shoot win over Norwich in the Capital One Cup after another 1-1 draw.

The league table shows an unbeaten Villa in fourth place after 13 games but they have slipped off the pace with their recent inability to claim victories.

The fans are starting to get disgruntled and voice their opinion on Twitter.

@avfcandy We need a striker big time, defence is solid but selling Bent was lunacy. #avfc

@sotcav87 Connolly needs to sort it out at Villa, we should be top of the league!!

@bryantelford Connolly out!!! #avfc

"I'm gobsmacked. Absolutely gobsmacked. They want me sacked??? In two and a half seasons, we have won SIX trophies. This club had only won 3 trophies since 1957 before I took over!! We are unbeaten in the league and are in the last 16 of the Champions League, some of the fans need to look hard in the mirror and realise where this club was before I arrived."
Jason Connolly

In other news....

Villa draw Sheffield Wednesday in the F.A. Cup 3rd Round and Manchester City in the Capital One Cup semi final.

Andreu Fontas will leave for Norwich in January in a £6m deal after falling behind Vlaar, Albiol and Shawcross in the central defence pecking order.

Villa are at home to Stoke in the Premiership next.
Twitter seems harsh
#getconollyout ;)

Do not give up on the title, I have faith in you to turn the title-chase around! :)

Shockingly fickle fans. Ungrateful twats ;)

Ha hope so but think United are too far in front. Trying for Giuseppe Rossi in January, need a striker big style.
Ungrateful twats :))
your doin an amazin job with Villa :D well done Jason.. although ur still collectin points tht was bad run of draws lol :p
Rookie, Glenn & Mark, if it weren't for fans like you, this job wouldn't be worth the hassle.

STOPPING THE ROT

After a run of five successive league draws, Villa faced sixth placed Stoke at Villa Park determined to earn their first win in 6 games.

ASTON VILLA 3-0 STOKE

A top drawer performance from the home side left the Potters with no answer to an attacking Villa side when going forward.

Gaston Ramirez opened the scoring on 24 minutes and quickly doubled their lead 2 minutes later through Andi Weimann.

Robert Huth conceded a late penalty which was duly dispatched by Neal Eardley.

ASTON VILLA 1-1 ATLETICO MADRID

Villa lost their 100% record in the group stages with this point at home to Atletico Madrid.

Villa lead through a Morgan Schneiderlin header on 27 minutes but Falcao equalized on 88 to share the spoils.

MANCHESTER UNITED 0-1 ASTON VILLA

Villa travelled to Old Trafford with a 41 game unbeaten run in the Premiership.

Most pundits and experts expected it to end here but a strike on the hour from Chieck Tiote moved Villa up to third with an invaluable win.

The Villa boss takes to Twitter to show his delight.

@jason_connolly Hopefully our win at Old Trafford tonight shuts up many of our recent critics. 42 unbeaten, well done lads.#avfc

In other news...

Villa draw Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi finals.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE KNOCKOUT STAGE DRAW

Fresh from romping through the qualifying rounds and group stage, Villa boss Jason Connolly and Chairman Randy Lerner make the trip to Brussels for the last sixteen draw.

When the pods were opened, Villa got the toughest draw imaginable.....

A trip to Catalunya beckons.....

The full draw is as follows -

"Well, this is what it's about. It's going to be a massive test going to play the best football club in the world but the trip to the Nou Camp will be a top experience for my lads. It's gonna be hard graft but we are hugely looking forward to it."
Jason Connolly

Our regular Tweeter on all things Villa had this to say...

@avfcandy Yes!! Barca!! So excited to go to the away leg, lad we can do it!!! #avfc

Villa are back in Premiership action next and entertain 18th placed Burnley at Villa Park.
Barca will be hard, but on a good day you can get something out of it. GL Jason :)
Cheers Or!

Hopefully that something is not a hammering!!
