The first game of the new season at home against RCD Espanyol was another high scoring affair which resulted in a 2-3 loss. The week after we got the first win of the season, on the road against RC Celta.

In the third game of the season I finally got all players in wanted together and almost injury free and we could put the team on the field that I had planned with before the start of the season. Only player not ready to start was Cihan Polat who picked a minor injury in the second game but Pompee Etienne had done very well in the preseason and was ready to step inn as his replacement.

With a lot of new players joining the team it was no surprise that several players were cranky and easily upset.
Andi Qosa was already starting to show diva attitudes again. I did not appreciate that he told the press that C.D. Constància was not big enough for him. With several new midfielders arriving in the off-season Cédric Pochat was also upset again and unclear if he wanted to stay in Inca.

To make the soap-opera complete, R.C.D Mallorca who was back up in the top division after winning the LIGA adelante the year before, decided to make a transfer offer for our number one striker Teodoro Bañares.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q173/Nordskov_dk/CD%20Constancia/72a_zpsd38f9335.jpg

We promptly rejected the offer (€1.33M) but it didn’t take long before Teodoro Bañares agent was walking in to my office demanding a new and improved deal for his client.
Before the transfer window closed R.C.D. Mallorca had upgraded the offer twice and were now willing to pay €2.8M for our top striker. If we decided to sell we would not only make a profit of €2.8M but also shatter the clubs previous record transfer of 1.7M for Diego Batista.
With Diego Batista already gone I had no intention selling Bañares and hell would freeze over before I sold my best striker to the evil empire just down the road. We refused the offer and instead sat down with Bañares and his agent and renewed his contract until 2025 now with a base salary of €8.750 per week. A bargain deal.

Before the transfer window closed we added what I hoped to be another pieces to the puzzle. Caio César and Raimond Zonneveld still needed to play more games together but I was sure that only the sky was the limit for them in the future. Still it was painfully clear when Caio César had been away with the Brazilian U-20 team that we needed depth in the central defense. I had now given up on Turkish Ergün Kaya.

Instead we signed Manuel Elizalde from Valladolid. He was a player for the future. He was a just 18-year old left footed Spaniard that could play both central and left defends. A strong hardworking youngster that could dominate in the air.

In the last minutes before the transfer window closed a well-known name from the past came flashing up on my computer screen. Eloy Àlvarez had been transfer listed by Córdoba CF and his agent were now looking for a new club. It was unclear what he had done to make himself unpopular with his current team this time around but it was enough to make him unwanted by the club and relegated to the Córdoba B-team.
For a second the thought of bringing him back crossed my mind. Then I remembered him standing just outside my office lying about wanting to stay in Inca, when he had already refused to sign a new deal and agreed upon a deal with Córdoba CF.
I quickly shook the thought of bringing him back to Mallorca out of my head.

Spain becomes the first European team to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar with a win over Scotland in the qualifying. Much were still to be decided but it didn't look likely that any C.D. Constància player would be selected to play football in Qatar. We now had several players regularly playing for their national teams but I was still waiting for the first Spanish C.D. Constància player to get an international on any level.

One player in form to make an appearance on his national team was Francisco Monti. In the first four games of the season he had scored four goals also had three assists and a 7.90 AvR.

Another player that looked like a good investment early in the season was Italian youngster Adolfo Giovannini. The young player could be used both as an AML and a striker. But what was most intriguing about him was his free kick abilities. After every training he stayed on the field with a net of balls and worked on his free kicks. And it clearly paid off as his fantastic freekick attributes (20) gave the team a new weapon we had never had before and Adolfo Giovannini had already scored twice in the three first games on direct free kicks.

Growth of the Nordskov coaching tree

After the great start to the season we hit a rough spot with six games without a win and it all culminated with a 0-5 trashing by FC Barcelona in mid-October. We managed to bounce back and wins against both Real Betis and 3rd place Malaga C.F. moved us up to 8th place after 12 games was played of the season.
The wins against Real Betis and Malaga C.F. was encouraging. This was the type of games we would have lost or at best drawn in previous seasons, but this year we did a much better job closing out close games.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q173/Nordskov_dk/CD%20Constancia/73A_zps83b37876.jpg

After the FC Barcelona game I had once again decided to change the formation. It was not a huge change this time but a necessary change. With the two strikers and two attacking midfielders out wide I had noticed that we had a tendency of becoming too aggressive and thereby vulnerable to counterattacks. Instead of playing with two central midfielders I decided to drop one of the midfielders down as a defensive midfielder in an asymmetric formation.

We would also had to go out and find a new Coach after Elche C.F. decided to hire our coach Juanjo Camacho as their new manager. He would be the first C.D. Constància coach to leave Inca to become a manager for the LIGA adelante team.

Before the first game against the Evil Empire (aka Mallorca) of the season we had an extra week off due to internationals. Three C.D. Constància would be traveling to play for their country.
Manuel Elizalde would play a U-20 game for Spain. Caio César would once again collect some frequent flyer miles going back to Brazil again to play for the U-20 team in a friendly game.
And finally Pompée Etienne would get his international debut, after he had decided to play for the Haiti national team instead of France. Pompée was just signed to a permanent contract a few weeks before after he had joined C.D. Constància on a loan deal from RC Lens back when the season started.

The last of the European teams for the upcoming World Cup were now being found. One of the big stories was that the upcoming World Cup would kick off without both Germany and England.
Germany finished on a disappointing 3rd place in their qualifying group behind Austria and Denmark while England lost 2-1 to Portugal in the playoffs between second place teams after finishing behind Ukraine in the group stage.
It was no surprise that both countries were now looking for new managers.

Another concern was once again Andi Qosa. In the game against Valencia CF he went down hard and when the doctors were done with him he was diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon and was ruled out for several months. But even that could not stop him talking about his desire to leave Mallorca for a bigger club. It would of course be impossible to sell him while he was injured. But now my biggest concern was more regarding what kind of play he would be when he returned from injury.
He was a young player with plenty of upside but he was also a player relaying on speed and quick cuts. How would that be affected by a torn Achilles tendon?

Only 15.598 (23.000 capacity) showed up on Iberostar Stadium in Palma to watch the first “Battle of Mallorca” this season. We played one of the worst games of the season and were lucky to get away with a 2-2 draw against perhaps the worst teams in the Liga BBVA.

A pretty decent month, some tough results to take but 7th place is very good. Hopefully you can build on this and finish perhaps in a Europa League spot :D
Well at least Mallorca are crap, even if you did draw to them :P If I ever watch Star Wars or any other movie with an 'Evil Empire' I will always think of R.C.D. Mallorca :))
Another brilliant update, unlucky against Mallorca but good to see some youngsters getting some International games under their belt, even if it is Under 21 or what not :P

More money

When the transfer window opened on the second of January 2021 the board announced that I would have a total of €11M available to buy new players. That was in addition to the close to €10M I had used already before the season started. I could have had another €2M if I was willing to guarantee that we would qualify for European football next season, but two ugly losses to Villarreal CF and Real Madrid and a bad streak of results overall just before the transfer window reopened had me rattled.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q173/Nordskov_dk/CD%20Constancia/74D_zps831e2780.jpg

Instead of sitting on the money I decided to go all inn and spend big.

I used €3.9M on a young Brazilian forward (with a German passport) named Jajá.
The player from Clube Atlético Mineiro came with great speed and leadership skills but most importantly a nose for scoring goals.
I probably hugely overpaid for the young unproven striker and the sale of Diego Batista for €1.7M now looked like a questionable decision. Only thing I could hang my hat on was that Batista had forgotten how to score and struggled with his new club Real Racing Club de Santander, S.A.D. just like I had predicted.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q173/Nordskov_dk/CD%20Constancia/74B_zps01e736c7.jpg

I shelled out another €3.5M for the Croatian U20 goalkeeper Ante Mihovec from GNK Dinamo. He was young but had played a lot of football in his young career and he had experience way beyond his age. He looked like he could at least push our current keeper Pau López in the competition for the starting spot in the lineup.

Next on the shopping list was another young Spanish talent that had gotten lost in the Olympique Lyonnais reserve / youth team. Ángel Sáiz was a 20-year old left back with several games for the Spanish U-20 team under his belt and plenty of upside for a reasonable price.

Perhaps the most intriguing signing was a just 16-year old defensive midfielder called Marin Morar. With four and a half star potential the young man was very much a purchase for the future.

The total tally for the new players bought finished at €23.5M for the year and I now found myself with big squad with a depth C.D. Constància had never had before.
It was still hugely important for me that despite spending BIG on new players I had still kept full control over the salary cost as no player on the roster made more than €22.500 per week.

One player that didn't come to Inca was Cesc Fàbregas. His agent did contact us about a possible contract but his salary demands were beyond reasonable and we quickly left the table. The same was the case with Pepe Reina how also passed thru Inca looking for a new contract.

On the field we struggled scoring goals in December. With all the new players coming in to the team I was afraid that the trouble would continue. But instead we picked up two quality wins against Real Club Celta de Vigo and a huge comeback win on the road against RCD Espanyol.

One sad chapter in the big book of football was the story about Fulham FC. They were relegated to the npower Championship in both 2013 and 2017 but in 2020/21 everything went completely wrong for the London based team.
After making it ?back to the EPL and ?all the way to the FA cup final where they lost to Manchester U it took less than 5 months before the club was again relegated to the npower Championship.
Shortly after the relegation was a fact the team went into administration with a debt of more than €70M. Both the teams Chairman and the teams manager Stuart Pearce were sacked and Fulham FC was deducted 10 points. That moved the already struggling team down to last place in the npower Championship standing and the future looked grim for the Lilywhites.
Another quality update, looks like the money is rolling in. Some decent results too :)

With the transfer window now closed it was time to look ahead. With sixteen rounds left to play we found ourself in sixth place in the standing. That would possibly be good enough for a place in the Europa League next season as Spain currently had four places in the Champions League and three in the Europa League.
Ahead of us it looked like that Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Valencia CF was running away from the pack and they would be slugging it out for the league title and the four Champions League spots.
But behind them seven teams still looked to have a claim for the three Europa League spots with Getafe CF and Malaga CF leading the pack.

A well known name for C.D. Constància fans had changed club in the winter transfer window. Our first real “star” player Eloy Álvarez was once again on the move and in a surprise development he was coming back to Mallorca.
After getting relegated to the B-team in Cordoba CF due to disagreements with the first team coach, Álvarez was transfer listed and RCD Mallorca saw a chance to make a good deal.
So once again Eloy Álvarez found himself back in Mallorca and back in the LIGA BBVA but probably not for long as RCD Mallorca is dead last in the division with little chance of avoiding relegation.

And that was not the only problem Mallorca had. The board and the manager Juan Antonio Anquela was now in a public fight playing out in the local media about him wanting to leave Mallorca and becoming the manager for Zaragoza RCD instead. Not the best way move forward when fighting for survival.

The career of Michael Laudrup had taken a strange twist the last few years.
After he was sacked as the Valencia CF coach back in 2015, Laudrup went back “home” to Denmark.
When Morten Olsen resigned from his role as coach for the Danish national team after a failed trip to the European Championship in the summer of 2016, Michael Laudrup was the natural candidate to take over. His time with the danish national team was not a success. In the World Cup qualifier Denmark found themself in a group with Ireland and Switzerland and still failed to qualify even for a playoff game.

Laudrup had to pay the price and the day after the last game of the qualifier (a 1-1 draw with Etonia) he was sacked. His next move came as a surprise to many. Instead of waiting for a job offer from a big-name club, Laudrup accepted an offer from Italian Serie-B club Modena FC just four days later.
He took over a club in deep crises and many expected him to disappear again quickly when the team was relegated at the end of the season. But Michael Laudrup decided to stay and won the Serie-C the year after and moved back up.
Laudrup stayed in Italy until the start of Feb 2022 when he was offered a job back in the Spanish LIGA BBVA.

Now he was back in Spain as the manager for Real Sociedad de Fútbol, S.A.D. Laudrup of course only got the job after I had turned it down a few days earlier.
Great updates, the Europa League looks like a very real possibility! :)
Another great update. Good to see you turn down Sociedad!
Rafa Van Der Vaart? How far into the future are you?
Neal : Great updates, the Europa League looks like a very real possibility! :)
It would be a great way to open up the new Inca stadium next season with Europa League play.
Maybe it’s all coming down to the last game of the season. ;)

Walter : Another great update. Good to see you turn down Sociedad!
Why would I ever leave Mallorca and go to San Sebastián?

edu1878 : Rafa Van Der Vaart? How far into the future are you?
The last update was from February 2022. In the game I am two seasons ahead of that.
