Manchester City finally took the lead when centre-back Ciaran Clark scored a well timed finish from close range on 52 minutes. Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic equalised for Manchester United after 56 minutes with a fine header from point-blank range.
In the shootout that followed it was left to full-back Fábio Coentrão to keep a cool head and smash home the winning penalty for Manchester City.
