Manager’s February Review

The Premier League performances in February have been brilliant, four games, four wins and four clean sheets. Defensively we were as solid as we have ever been and we were enough of a force going forward to win all of our games. The two wins over Spurs were particular highlights, especially the game at White Hart Lane, where we battled for our victory.

In the FA Cup, we were very disappointing, after we could only drew 0-0 at home to Birmingham, I named a weakened side for the replay and paid the penalty by losing 2-1 and going out. In the Champions League, we have won the first leg of our tie against Real and although beating Real Madrid is a big achievement, I am a little unhappy at only having a one goal lead going to Madrid.

My player of the month for February is Yaya Toure. He scored three very important goals this month and also dominated the midfield in every game he played. His power and strength is unmatched throughout the world of football and we are lucky to have him. I also have to mention that Vincent Kompany won the Premier League Player of the Month and Matija Nastasic won the Young Player award.

Saturday 1st March 2014 – Bolton Wanderers v Manchester City (Premier League)

Man City took a lot longer than expected to take the upper hand against rivals Bolton, but once they got in front for a second time there was no way they were letting Bolton back in and ended up running away with it. A confident performance and another goal for loan signing Podolski has sent City closer to the title.

Sunday 9th March 2014 – Stoke City v Manchester City (Premier League)

Another three points for City comes after another one sided affair at the Britannia Stadium. Two goals from Sergio Aguero was enough and in all fairness City could have had a lot more but Stoke kept them at bay as City secured their seventh straight League win.

Saturday 15th March 2014 – Manchester City v Swansea City (Premier League)

City’s pre-match build up was disrupted when news broke that on loan striker Lukas Podolski has torn knee ligaments and will miss the remainder of the season. City manager Georgi Kinkladze will be disappointed by the news as Podolski had made a positive impression on the Club’s title challenge. Kinkladze did announce that Podolski will be staying with City and he will assess the situation closer to the end of the season and judge whether to bring him in on a permanent basis.

Ahead of the big Champions League game against Real Madrid, City named a weakened starting eleven for today’s game, including a 17 year old Croatian midfielder on the right, and nearly paid for it but City’s man in form, Sergio Aguero, came off the bench to win it with a stunning 22 yard free kick with 5 minutes to go.

Tuesday 18th March 2014 – Real Madrid v Manchester City (Champions League First Knock-Out Round 2nd Leg)

Real Starting XI – Casillas, Maicon, Ramos, Pepe, Arbeloa; Khedira, Modric; Di Maria, Ozil, Ronaldo; Benzema SUBS – Fernandez, Xabi Alonso, Sahin, Higuain, Casado, Callejon, Jese

A great battling performance at the Bernabeu sees City grab a 1-1 draw and go through to the next round. Real had most of the chances and no-one could have taken anything away from them if they had have won the game but City battled hard and did what was needed.

In the Quarter Finals City will face Bayern Munich, with the first leg in Germany. The draw was made for the Semi Final and the winner of this Quarter Final will face either PSG or Arsenal for a place in the Champions League Final.

Saturday 22nd March 2014 – Manchester City v Norwich City (Premier League)

MCFC Starting XI – Hart, van der Wiel, Kompany, Nastasic, Shaw; Nem, Barry, Moutinho, Bale; Aguero; Cavani SUBS – Friedel, Zabaleta, Varane, Toure, Milner, Silva, de Jong

City were clearly still suffering from a European hangover here as they failed to do anything and lost to a battling Norwich side, as they dropped their first points at home all season. Although they still dominated the game and had more chances, Norwich snatched the win with two strong headers.

Manager’s March Review

This month we played 4 Premier League games, winning the first three and then finishing the month with a poor defeat against Norwich at home. We won our first 3 games comfortably and was able to rest most of the team for one of the games. At the end of the month we are now 14 points clear with 8 games to go, although everyone else has played one more game, so we know that 4 more wins and we will be Champions of England.

In the Champions League we took a 3-2 lead to Madrid, and knowing it was going to be a tough game, the last thing I wanted to do was concede an early goal. And although we conceded a goal in the 9th minute, Aguero made it 1-1 2 minutes later and we held on for a 1-1 draw and made it through to the next round, where we will face Bayern Munich.

My player of the month for March is Sergio Aguero. He couldn’t stop scoring, in the games where he didn’t start, he came on and made an impact. He was a force in all of the games and strikes fear into the opposition defenders. Matija Nastasic also came runner up in the Young Player of the Month award.

Tuesday 1st April 2014 – Bayern Munich v Manchester City (Champions League Quarter Final 1st Leg)

A good competitive match between the two sides ends in a draw. Bayern has the best chance of the first half when Mandzukic hit the bar just before half time, but it was City who took the lead in the second half when Badstuber brought down Nastasic and Aguero converted the penalty. City looked to have won the game but a mistake between Clichy and Hart at the back lead to Bayern leveling the game, there is all to play for in the second leg.

Final Score – Bayern Munich 1 (Bony 87) Manchester City 1 (Aguero 72(p))

I was happy with it, but a bit disappointed at same time because it was a mistake that cost us the win and so late on!

Saturday 5th April 2014 – Manchester City v Fulham (Premier League)

City took early control of this game and were never threatened by Fulham, with them only having one attempt on goal all game. Two cool finishes from Silva and Bale gave City a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes but were unable to break them down again during the game.

Man City knew that a clean sheet would see them through to the next round and that is exactly what they got. City dominated the game in all fairness and Bayern rarely troubled Joe Hart but there were finger nails being bitten near the end as City knew one goal would knock them out but the defense held firm and City go through to face Arsenal in the Semi Finals of this year’s Champions League. Daniele De Rossi will miss the first leg of the Semi Final after picking up his third yellow card of the Tournament.
