Mauricio Pochettino had a dispute with the Southampton chairman about whether to sell one of the club's star players and the former wanting to sell Jason Puncheon for a high fee. However, the chairman decided to fire Mauricio Pochettino and keep Jason Puncheon.

He then decided to hire recently retired Steven Gerrard as the manager and gave him a 12.75m transfer budget
