Pellegrini Set For The Etihad?
Social media sites and media sources from around the world have gone into overdrive after it was revealed that Manuel Pellegrini had been seen boarding a plane from Malaga Airport, thought to be heading for Manchester, and specifically, the team Pellegrini has been linked to joining since the sacking of Roberto Mancini at the end of last season.
City have already signed two players this summer, Jesus Navas from Sevilla, and Fernandinho from Shakhtar Donetsk, who are both players that Pellegrini is known to be a big admirer of. Seeing as both signings were made whilst City were still without a manager, it seems like they could have been the signings of a man soon to be appointed, and this further fueled speculation that Pellegrini was being lined up to join the Manchester club. However, it could just be that City were trying to begin the extensive process of strengthening the squad, and bought these two players are as they knew they were both available and would improve the quality of the team.
If these rumours are confirmed to be true, then Pellegrini is expected to be given a tour of the training ground tomorrow, and given the chance to meet the players and the backroom staff over the next couple of days, before putting pen-to-paper on his contract later this week. As we know, Mancini's biggest problem last season was that he often struggled to get along with the staff at City, particularly the players, meaning they often didn't play right, leading to the trophyless campaign for City. So, letting Pellegrini meet the players and staff will give him the chance to see if they're right for him, and if he is right for the club.
The general reception to Pellegrini from Manchester City fans has been good, despite him never having won much as a manager. He is perhaps best known for the time he has spent as a manager in Spain, with Vilarreal, Real Madrid, and Malaga. His greatest success out of this trio of clubs perhaps came with Vilarreal, with whom he reached the Champions League semi-finals with, before being knocked out after a 1-0 aggregate loss to Arsenal, the eventual runners-up. After this, Pellegrini spent a season in charge of Real Madrid, and despite not winning any trophies, did bring Christiano Ronaldo to the Bernabeu from Manchester United, so obviously knows the right transfers to make. Last season, he was with Malaga CF, and took the team to the Champions League quarter-finals, this time losing out to Borussia Dortmund, who were the eventual runners-up in Munich. Many City fans are hoping he can replicate these European successes at the Etihad, as well as bringing domestic silverware too.
It is thought to be a few days before these rumours will be confirmed, if they are true, but many seem to think they are, with odds becoming ever smaller with some bookmakers. Currently, some bookmakers are pricing Pellegrini's appointment at 1-50, meaning they seriously expect him to be named within a few days. However, this is football, and anything can happen. You never know, we could even end up with someone else managing City next year, not Pellegrini.
