O’Leary Unveiled
David O’Leary has today been officially unveiled, by Peter Hill-Wood, as the new manager of Arsenal Football Club. The chairman and new manager met with journalists this morning in the press room, at the Emirates Stadium, to answer questions from the gathered media.
Peter started the press conference off by welcoming the media and officially naming David O’Leary as the new manager of Arsenal. He stated he was delighted that David had agreed to take charge of the club and he was excited about the upcoming season. Peter then introduced David to the journalists who then aimed their questions at him.
David was firstly asked how he felt about being given the opportunity to manage the club that he served so well during his playing career. He said he was excited about the prospect of standing on the touch line at the Emirates Stadium in front of the passionate fans and it’s a dream come true for him. He went on to say that he was desperate to get started with him having already met his backroom staff and set out his plans for pre-season. David was then asked about his priorities this season in terms of competitions. His reply was that the performing well in the Premier League had to be the main priority and to ensure that the club did not just settle for a fourth place finish as they had in previous years. A journalist suggested that the new manager would have to be heavily involved in order for this to happen and for him to start reshaping this club from today. David made the journalist aware that he fully understood the task at hand and had already started to identify areas of development in terms of the club, specifically the playing squad.
Arsenal have always been known as a passing team who like to retain possession and play their way into the box. O’Leary suggested that this would be the way his team would play but unlike previous seasons there would be a plan b for the team to change to. When he was asked to expand on this, he said simply, “It is important for the team to attack the game but remain responsible at the back and don’t become prone to defending counter attacks.”
A journalists seeked clarification on recent rumours that Arsenal had been interested in signing both Gonzalo Higuain and Diego Perotti. David suggested that these two players had not been his transfer targets but that of the previous management. He said he would be identifying his own targets after extensive deliberation and that he was keen to adopt a similar ethos in terms of wages as Arsene Wenger did.
Peter Hill-Wood intervened at this point and brought the press conference to an end with him thanking the gathered media and David O’Leary for agreeing to become the new manager of Arsenal.
