This early clash against title challengers Manchester United is seen as David O’Leary’s first real challenge in his time so far as Arsenal manager. Arsenal have managed to start the season positively with an away with against West Bromwich Albion. Despite this, the Arsenal side have been slated for their poor performance and have been described as “lucky” to have come away with the three points. Manchester United started the season in a more positive manner with a 2-0 win against Swansea at Old Trafford. It would have been exactly the start that Sir Alex Ferguson would have wanted.

Matches between Arsenal and Manchester United have become known as fiery affairs with there having been several players having been booked; including many red cards. This did nothing at the time to help improve the image pundits had of Arsenal as an aggressive team under Arsene Wenger. The two managers as well at times engaged in a lot of minds games with comments being aimed at both clubs. The media are looking forward to seeing if anything will be different now David O’Leary is in charge of Arsenal, however, nobody is holding their breath.

O’Leary Speaks About Manchester United

The Sunday Mirror: Manchester United are heading into this game off a more comprehensive win compared to your sides win against West Brom, which of the two sides will be the most confident?

David O’Leary: If you look at the league table, despite it only one game having been played, it shows that we have the same number of points as United...that is all that matters! Both teams have had good starts to the campaign and I can’t speak on Sir Alex’s behalf but I can tell you that our team are confident in coming away with another three points.

TEAMtalk.comYou don’t appear to be nervous, is this the case?

David O’Leary: This is a clash that has its history and we haven’t been on the winning side as often as we would have liked against United. If you go into any match feeling nervous then the other side will hammer you and that is no different against Manchester United. It is important that we go into this game confident that we can come away with a result.

TEAMtalk.com:Games like this surely bring something special to the Premier League...there aren’t many other clashes like it are there?

David O’Leary: I think this match will give an early indication of both teams intentions for the coming season. It is always going to be a special match whether it takes place at the beginning of the season or if it is at the mid-way point. It is a match that always has drama and standout performances so I am sure there will be a lot of people keeping an eye on the result.

The Sunday Mirror: In recent games the matches have been remembered for the on-pitch bust ups between players. How do you intend on controlling your team?

David O’Leary: I have made it quite clear to the team that it is vital that the team has eleven players on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

BBC London: Is there any news in regards to any potential deals being completed before the transfer window shuts? Thereis still speculation surrounding the club and Higuain.

David O’Leary: We are still making enquiries but I am delighted with the two players who have come in so far. It is important for the club to concentrate the upcoming games instead of worrying about possible deals.
