League Results

Newcastle kicked off their Premier League campaign away to Chelsea. Whilst Chelsea largely dominated the match, debutant Alessandro Matri gave Newcastle the lead after a controversial penalty decision. Matri slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner, whilst Petr Cech dived the opposite way. Fernando Torres equalized for Chelsea after Eden Hazard crossed the ball to him and Torres scored a simple tap-in. Demba Ba also played against former club Newcastle, one year after joining Chelsea. The attendance for the game was 41,798.

When the fixtures were announced, it looked grim for Newcastle. The first four fixtures were against Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool. Having earned a draw in the away game against Chelsea, Newcastle were to host their first home game of the season against Arsenal. Nobody predicted the final scoreline. A comfortable 2-0 win for the home side. Maybe it wasn't such a surprise that they won, being the hosts, but to win by a two goal margin was a superb result for the Tyneside club. Captain Fabricio Coloccini opened the scoring for Newcastle when Davide Santon whipped in a corner which found the head of Moussa Sissoko, who headed the ball down to Coloccini, who placed the ball in the bottom of the net. The next goal came from a counter attack. As Newcastle continued to defend well, new signing Davide Astori headed the ball out to Hatem Ben Arfa after Bacary Sagna had crossed the ball. Ben Arfa, who was continuing his recovery from injury, carried the ball forward and then hit a short pass to Alessandro Matri. Matri played the ball through to Vurnon Anita who then hit a 10 yard pass to Moussa Sissoko on the edge of the box. As Arsenal goalkeeper Wojech Szczesny rushed out of his goal, Sissoko tapped the ball to his left and the ball found the net. Attendance: 48,879
Cup Result

'Wonderkid' goalkeeper, Joe van der Sar became the youngest player to play for Newcastle, and the youngest player to play in the Capital One Cup when he made his debut for the club at the age of 14 years and 166 days. Newcastle beat Npower League 1 side MK Dons 1-3 in the Capital One Cup 2nd round. Yoan Gouffran picked up the match ball and the Man Of The Match award after a match winning hat-trick sealed Newcastle's place in the 3rd round. The first goal came when Gouffran intercepted a pass on the halfway line and sprinted past the last man. He took the ball out to the byline and when he saw that the 'Dons goalkeeper was off his line, lobbed the ball over him in outstanding fashion. His second goal came after a brilliant through ball from Vurnon Anita. He ran onto it and slotted it under the keeper. He rounded off his hat-trick when left back Davide Santon hit a 30 yard pass to Moussa Sissoko on the edge of the area. He ran down the left flank before drilling a low cross in to Gouffran who just tapped it home. MK Dons got one goal back after Dean Bowditch picked the ball up on the edge of the area and fired it low, to the right of the goal. Attendance: 8,120 (stadium:mk)
