Randy Lerner also stated that after this he thinks Aston Villa can push on and climb up the table in the coming seasons all they have to do now is find a manager who is up for a challenge.

Aston Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov takes over the Villains

Former Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov comes back to the club this time as manager. The Bulgarian retired from football at 34 whilst at Villa after his battle with leukaemia went into remission. He played 186 games for the club scoring 9 goals after playing 228 games for Celtic scoring 55.

On 30 March 2012, Petrov was diagnosed with acute leukaemia. The condition was diagnosed following tests after Petrov developed a fever following Aston Villa's 3–0 defeat to Arsenal. Because of this, Petrov told Bulgarian press that he planned to retire from club and international football; his agent later denied any reports of retirement: "It is not true that Stiliyan has said he is retiring from football. What he did say was that he was fighting for his life and that he will fight to recover." He visited Villa Park for the visit of Chelsea and in the 19th minute, the crowd gave him an ovation with applause. Petrov's shirt number was 19, hence the 19th minute. Aston Villa lost the match 2–4. The tribute caught the imagination of fans, and home and away fans now repeat the ovation at every Villa game.

On 10 June Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert announced that Petrov would remain Aston Villa's club captain for the 2012–13 season. In his absence the team captaincy was taken over by Dutch defender Ron Vlaar. On his 33rd birthday, Petrov visited his teammates on the first day of their pre season training, and was presented with a cake by the players, who sang happy birthday to him and gave him a round of applause. On 2 August 2012, it was announced that Petrov's leukaemia was in remission.

Petrov is now back with full backing from the backroom staff and fans. Randy Lerner the chairman has full belief and reckons Stiliyan can lead them to success.

Petrov:Start Of An Era

When I arrived at the training ground on that first day in charge of Villa my heart skipped a beat. I was really pleased I was back at a club that backed and appreciated me even when I wasn't playing due to illness. The first person I met was the chairman, Randy Lerner, who I knew very well and had a great relationship with when I was a player and still did. After a nice chat with the guy I walked outside to admire the facility.

As always it was in mint condition and looking as great as ever.

After that I traveled to Villa Park where I was scheduled for a press conference and then I was asked to introduce myself as manager to a packed Villa Park.

Between me and you the press conference was very boring so I wont go into detail. Then for my final destination of the day: The Villa Park Pitch.

The reception was outstanding and all the fans gave me a standing ovasion. For the icing on the cake on the screen was this photo:

I'd like to thank the fans for their continuing support and I hope I can bring success to Aston Villa. Thank You and Goodbye for now.
