In a peculiar turn of events, David Beckham (tipped for knighthood in the coming years after drawing an end to his storied career) and Shola Ameobi (A Nigerian-International fairly known across England for completing his entire footballing career at Newcastle United), have been entrusted with the responsibility of presenting this year’s edition of the coveted tournament. Beckham declared it an honour and a privilege to be given the opportunity to do so, and similarly expressed excitement both for the impending World Cup and working alongside Ameobi:
“It’s a big, big responsibility that I am fully aware of. I wouldn’t have taken up the opportunity if I didn’t feel I could do it though. I’m looking forward to it. The World Cup Final is still the most watched sporting event worldwide, so to be part of such a monumental occasion is a great honour for me,” Beckham told BBC.
Ameobi was reportedly ‘chuffed’ to be given the role of commentator for the Tournament, beginning his career as a pundit as his playing days draw to an end. “My days are all but up in terms of playing, and I think making the transition from player to commentator will be a good one. I never anticipated that I would start my new career like this, talking about, in my opinion, the greatest sporting event in the world, on the television.”
Both Ameobi’s Nigeria, and Beckham’s England- failed to make the grade.

“It was a big let down that England couldn’t make it to the finals, and also, Nigeria couldn’t quite qualify, but, I think, in a way, that is a good thing. I will be able to speak my mind without bias and, going into the competition, I don’t have any particular favourites. It will just be fantastic to watch such quality football.” Ameobi told press on a separate occasion.

“Watching England narrowly miss out on qualification last year was a big disappointment for the nation. Having played in World Cups myself I think it was particularly saddening not to be a part of a new crop of players who could potentially better our results. I think it is important that the governing body look at this and address it for the future.” Beckham was present at England’s last qualification match, where Wembley hosted the Poles.
