FM 2014 Tactics - WonderTac 4-1-2-2-1
At the end of my FM13 saves I got tired of always trusting the AMC and spending loads of money in a good play-maker for that position. I felt that a solid defense with aggressive midfielders and good wingers should be funnier and more dominating then ever.

So this tactic was created and my passion was back on track.

4-1-2-2-1 explained

Left Back: FB with attacking style - the fullbacks will always help you out in your attacking movement. They need acceleration and pace to be really threatening.

Central Defender: CD one defend and one stopper - the "CD - defend" needs good positioning to be able to cover up when the stopper is making he's moves. The "CD - stopper" needs a good amount of aggression, decisions and determination, and of course, a brave one!

Regista: With a supporting style this is a very important player. He will try to retrieve lost possession and always close down the space to win the ball from your opponent. Tackling, Marking, Strength is just some of the attributes he needs. Creativity is not a must, but it will help you start good attacking movements.

Midfielders: One advanced play-maker with attacking movement, and another deep lying play-maker supporting. Your AP is almost as the AMC play-maker, but needs skills off the ball and good anticipation is really useful. With high teamwork he will help you a lot! The DLP is focused to help out the defense but still have the capacity in your attacks. He will control the space between your midfield and defense, and will drop the ball to more creative players. Teamwork, Passing, Tackling and Creativity will increase he's performance.

Wingers: One classic winger with attacking movement and the other a inside forward, also attacking movement. Pace, Acceleration, Dribbling, Creativity and Crossing is important. The IF will benefit from good Long Shots and Finishing. They control your attack, always. Will score a lot of goals!

Striker: Your ever loved Poacher, either he scores or he does not score. Either way he is really important for your wingers. He will move into channels which creates good spaces for your wingers and if he his a good header, he will dominate the air and score a lot! Falcao is probably the best one for this position, but I will leave that up to you :)

Tested with 4 teams

I have tried this with Bayern Munich, Ath Bilbao, Everton and Dortmund.
The results has been really good, some amazing victories and your wingers are really important for this to work. If they are good, they will score at least 20 goals per season and help your team a lot with their movement.

And because this is a tactic suited for players focusing on their instructions a lot, it will help you to make individual changes and really watch your players working to get the most out of it.

I'm in love with the use of strong Central Midfielders who puts the wingers in such great positions! No more AMC and no more tears when özil leaves for Gunners..

Feedback is welcome

Please leave a comment and don't be afraid to speak your mind! It's up to you to make this work with your players.

Thanks a lot for reading!

Updates

2014-01-09

Tested with a lot of different teams during the last months and with the latest patch it's still working great!

2014-01-26

New save with Chelsea, first season first game against Liverpool - crushed them.
Notice 'pool just had 1 attempt at goal, in the last minute. Even thou the possession was almost 50/50, we created a lot of chances and goals, and always pushed 'pool to loose the ball high up the pitch.

Tactical Tips
I changed the role for the DM to a Anchor Man, this way he can concentrate of only retrieving the ball and press the opponent all the time - when he is in possession, he delivers the ball to a more creative player and keep his position in case of a counter-attack.

The second change is the striker, at the moment I'm using him as a advanced forward, just because he is not the main goalscorer in the team, and by using him as AF, he runs around creating minor problems for the opponents defense, which could lead them to losing the ball and maybe create chances for himself. In attack situations, he's role is to run, run run, always - create spaces for the wingers, confuse the defenders and sometimes sniff up a rebound or a loose ball!

Try it if you feel lucky :)

@heroeee - sometimes I go with defensive formation as match prep for the team, when we face big teams away.

i need to buy good player to success with this formation .. i need CD RB Wing InsideForword and CF lol :D

it's the best formation .. but i play MC box to box behind AP , DMC can control the space between midfield and defense i'm not need DLF anymore

i have question do you change your team instruction in home and away matches ?!

i think in away matches you need more defense inst. and play with counter attack

in home you can play with more offense inst. is that right ?!

What are the team instructions for this tactic?

  • alexthyberg's avatar
@Reecy101 - No set piece instructions, I use default but sometimes if I feel that I have a strong team rating on heading, I do mix with it.
Usually I don't care about the assistant's tacitc advice. If I notice something faulty or anything like that, I change it myself.

    Thanks!

Does this tactics come with set piece instructions as well or do we have to implement those ourselves and when you play with this tactic, do you accept your assistant's recommendations during matches or just let the match run its course with no tactical change?

i immediately had a problem with corners when i used this tactic. i was conceding far too many so i made everyone man mark except the back 4, i kept a creative player on the edge of the box and my striker upfront. not sure if it was just me

@nyasser - Try using him with different instructions. The focus of him is not to score goals every time, but more moving around and creating spaces for the wingers. He shall have a free roll, but if you find it hard to get what you need from him. Try using him as a regular Striker with less free roll.

@panos - Yes the opposite wingers are the big threat in this tactic. But try using your wingdefenders as a defence movement and try to close areas with your att.wingers - they should be able to press high and making the opposition's playmaker not be able to cross the balls to their wingers.

    i have some problem.
my striker are scoreless with this tactic, any suggest, alexthyberg?
  • panos027's avatar
@alexthyberg i think that the backs and generally the wide players have to mark tighter as i am conceding a lot o goals from the opposite wingers ! this always happen when i lose the ball in attack ! any help fro this...?

I have just finished the boxing day fixture with my Stoke team and sit proudly at the top of the premier league.

This formation has worked brilliantly for me. My first team is as follows:

    GK - Asmir Begovic
    RB - Andy Wilkinson
    CB - Ryan Shawcross
    CB - Robert Huth
    LB - Erik Pieters
    DM - Steven N'Zonzi (Regista)
    CM - Wilson Palacios
    CM - Johnathan Dos Santos
    AMR - Nicolas Gaitan
    AML - Kris Commons
    ST - Peter Crouch

We have beaten many of the bigger teams with this formation as well, even when i thought it would be better to tighten up I kept going and have been very suprised.

@panos027 - Try to build your play from the defence. In some games, I've dropped down the striker to AMC and use him as engance. He will run everywhere with his free roll and it could help you with possesion.

@czechow - Don't really know what you can do. I would try "counter", and maybe suprise sometimes with moving the DMC to AMC.

I conceded alot of goals. But I have no problem scoring (wingers do not score much even as inside forwards). I have the worst goal difference in the league! I played it again last night and now I am bottom with ten games to go! Don't think it is possible to play such a philosophy with a relegation team which is a shame since I have done so before and got mid-table finishes. I even got two good results in the cup and league and my players were all in decent form and morale, then I got beat three times in a row by Fulham, Chelsea and Villa.
  • panos027's avatar
@alexthyberg i have possession problem ! in every match my possesion is about 40%-46% !!! what can i do for this ?
  • alexthyberg's avatar
@czechow - As I've described and said, the wingers should be inside wingers because the whole idea is for them to score goals. It's the keypart to make them effective, but it's also a hard part, as you just told me. I've noticed that counter'attacks with this formation is very effective, if you have thoose monster cm's. Are you conceding a lot of goals? Or do you just have problems scoring?
  • czechow's avatar
My CMs are without doubt my best players. I have huddlestone, Mo Diarra, Livermore, Koren, Honda, Zucculini and so on. My wingers are out and out wingers (and may be letting me down since they aren't great) which is where I thought the problem may lie. However, I have tried using them both as wingers to suit them, rather than as inside forwards (eventhough I would prefer the latter) and still got bad results. I cannot see how else I can change my formation other than to put in two DMs and one CM but my feeling is that it would be unbalanced. Otherwise, my only option is 4-4-2 pump the ball long and counter attack, which is a real shame.

As you say, I will try play out a few months with a counter attacking formation and revert back to this one when/if my team come back to form. I did try take on both Palace and Cardiff at home with good morale but lost to Palace and drew with Cardiff. If there are any other thoughts/amendments I can make, please let me have them, especially since it seems from the other comments that this tactic works for them?!

@ alexthyberg i would like to apologize for yesterday's feedback about a horrible tactic ! i used the tactic with another team and i manage to get a lot of good results ! i am sorry again if i insulted someone !

@zechow - thanks for good constructive feedback, seems like some one could learn from you :)

well, I see you made som tweaks and still not doing well. I would try another tactic with a different formation - give that tactic a few victories and in a timefram maybe 1-2 months, then, in some of the games when you got "that" feeling :D Use this tactic again with the tweakes you think your team will benefit from. I say again that the wingers are the most important - and in the CM positions.

Please let me know if it solves anything and how you did it :)

    Thanks again!
  • panos027's avatar
@czechow First of all i didnt remember to make a reference to you !!!!! Secondly why do you insult me ?
  • czechow's avatar
    Firsty, Panos - you're a douchebag, get a life.

Second, I have tried using this tactic with Hull in the premier league as it is the sort of philosophy and tactic I designed myself (and it didn't go too well). Obviously, it is probably not the best team to try this tactic with but I have the exact players for the formation so thought I might get some decent results. Unfortunately, I am getting battered most weeks and even lost to Crystal Palace at home. Is it just the case that I give up and use this philosophy with a top team only or does the tactic need tweaking? I have tried changing the DLP to a BWM/BBM as well as changing the attacking WB's to suppoting FB's, to become a bit more defensive. it seems a shame that Brendan Rodgers' successful Swansea days cannot be copied if that is the case... Any advice would be welcome, I really don't want to resort to long ball, counter attacking tactics because my team is crap! Thanks.

I've used this tactic for my Juventus team with out any transfer. And it worked well with Llorente role in Targetman. but with Tevez in Proacher role it become undone.

Anyway, this is a good tactic for serie A, prevent you from counter :D
