I was curious if strikerless tactics could still work in FM22. Seems they do.
Liverpool have the ideal players for this tactic. You'll need good passers that can play nicely weighted balls for the attacking three to run on to. The three 'forwards' need to be fast. Salah and Mane are perfect for this. And Salah, well...
66 direct goal involvements in 56 games.
This tactic is perfect to take advantage of teams playing a high defensive line - with a higher back line of your own, if you have good passers in defence (Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold), they won't have to pass over giant distances, making it easier for them to chip in with direct assists from the back.
Firmino is obviously not as fast as Mane/Salah, and so finished the season with noticeably fewer goals, showing the need for pace in the final third.
Ultimately, Liverpool won the league by 9 points. If you replace Firmino with a good finisher with pace, I imagine you could be the top goal scoring team in the Premier League. I'd recommend Haaland - more on him later.
Plenty of potential for big wins. Three 5-1 victories just in the 2nd half of the season here, and three 4-1 wins in a month in March.
Got Liverpool to the Champions League Semis and both domestic cup finals, vs Manchester City both times.
Also tested this with Dortmund and Haaland did exactly what you'd expect, playing as the Shadow Striker.
Frustratingly finished 2nd to Bayern, but again, you can see a good spread of assists from across the team and Dortmund finishing 11 points clear of 3rd.
In summary, the necessities for this tactic are:
-Good passers, even in defence ideally
-Fast attacking midfielders with good finishing
-A physically fit team. You will not be getting 60%+ possession of the ball with this tactic. You will be chasing the ball. A lot. (Dortmund - 47% average possession, ranking 15th out of 18 teams. Liverpool - 47% again, ranking 15th out of 20). Make sure you have fit players, and depth in your squad for when you need to rotate.
As long as you have all of that, you'll have plenty of fun watching your attacking midfielders bang in the goals.
