February: Bossaerts - A Future Captain?
Before starting this month, I set myself and the team a challenge, which was to increase the eight point gap we had achieved last month. It didn’t matter to me by how much we increased the gap as long as it got a bit bigger in order to put more distance between us and the rest of the league. Once we had increased the gap I would start to feel less nervous about our title challenge and instead a sense of confidence and relief would take over as the league slowly but surely became ours; I do now believe we have at least one hand on the trophy. I am pleased to announce that we were successful in completing this challenge and that there is now a gap of eleven points between us and second place Wolves who are entangled in a battle for the second automatic promotion spot with at least three other clubs.
What is even more pleasing is the fact we have managed to increase the gap having played two extra games compared to the other teams around us as we continue to play in the historic FA Cup. Admittedly we made it difficult for ourselves in the first cup tie against Nottingham Forest, even more so as I played an under strength side in the hope that we may actually make a dignified exit from the competition. This however would not have gone down well with the fans as Forest are one of our closest and most fierce rivals. When it came to the second leg, and we had been assured of a potential sixth round tie against Everton, I was more determined to win. We will head into the game against Everton with confidence but if we did not make it any further, we could look back on our journey fondly. Also, with the league season drawing to an end, not having the extra commitment would benefit the players greatly as a number of them are starting to flounder and suffer from fatigue.
One player who is not suffering and is simply going from strength to strength is Bossaerts. He is an extremely talented young centre back who is loving life at Notts County, well, that’s what he has told the papers! I am hoping that if we manage to achieve promotion, which is looking more likely now with the eleven point gap, whether it is by the automatic places or play-offs, that Bossaerts will see sense and sign for us on a permanent deal. I cannot see him getting into the first team of his parent club, Manchester City, who are pushing for another league title so instead should stick with us where he could eventually become a future captain and club legend. His name is the first on the team sheet and he repays the faith that is shown in him. It is his commanding of the back line that resulted in us only conceding four goals in six games this month. I can only see him going from strength to strength and as long as he stays fit, we will continue to keep opponents out and with our strikers all being on good form, our goal difference will carry on improving
