April/May: Sky Bet Championship Winners!

Last month was an appalling month which I would rather forget about. However, it has to be mentioned purely because of the transition from then to now. We had looked to have thrown away our chances of not just gaining back to back promotions but also the league championship. Our confidence was slumping into the abyss and it was going to take a lot for us to get out of this slump and return to the form we had shown for the majority of the season. What was so different about this last month compared to that awful one? The answer is nothing; I didn’t change a thing.

Even though our title chances were looking less likely, I still had confidence in my players and the way I like to set this team out in terms of formation and how we approached each game. We continued to use the same 4-4-2 formation, which allowed for us to remain defensive as well as having options up front. I didn’t make drastic changes to my first choice eleven but instead continued to have trust in the players who had performed admirably all season long. I do feel that it was this continued faith in the players that saw us turn round the season back to being positive, which ultimately won us the league championship. Despite me sticking to the preferred starting eleven and formation, there was one big factor that had a huge impact on the outcome of this championship winning season. That was the return of Gozie Ugwu.

Ugwu had been absent from the squad for the majority of that abysmal month with an injury sustained in February. We had missed his prolific goal scoring ability which meant we had started to lose the reputation of being lethal in front of goal. Kysela did well in his place but he is still a very young player and the pressure certainly got to him. Samed Yesil is unfortunately very inconsistent so I didn’t feel confident enough to call upon him to lead the line I felt a sense of relief when Ugwu returned to the starting line up and he didn’t hang about by helping himself to a goal against Leeds United, which really did kick start the season again. I have already looked to ensure that Ugwu remains at the club for foreseeable future with him signing a new three year contract. I can see him being a big hit in the Premier League if he stays away from injury.

Walter quizzed me on my commitment to Notts County and whether I would stick with them if another job came my way. It was a thought provoking question that has then resulted in me applying for three other jobs. Two of the jobs were at clubs in Italy, with Inter Milan and AS Roma receiving my application form, as well as my beloved Liverpool FC in England acknowledging my interest after Roberto Mancini leaving the Merseyside club. Despite all three clubs acknowledging my applications, I was unsuccessful in all three of my applications. This made me realise that it is possibly a bit too early to think about one of those big clubs, or moving onto any other club for that matter. I have since then signed a new two year contract with three weeks on my current deal left to run. This will give me the chance to see how we fair in the Premier League without the lengthy contract restriction which could stop me moving onto a different challenge.

We really did step up our game and got the rewards! I am so pleased we won the league and hopefully with some new additions we can do well in the Premier League! Bring it on!

What has been happening in the...

Due to be spending the start of my managerial career in the lower leagues I have not spent too much time observing on-goings in the Premier League, apart from to check how Liverpool are doing. However, with my Notts County side now competing in the Premier League I felt it was necessary to carry out some research into the current state of some of the clubs in the Premier League. This research will hopefully give me some indication as to what my club will come up against next season. Another reason for doing this is the fact this is the furthest I have gone in a save for a long time so I am expecting a lot to have changed!

Luciano Spalletti is in his second term at Liverpool after replacing the sacked Brendan Rogers. Rogers was replaced by Spalletti, who was sacked and replaced with Michael Laudrup. Laudrup was eventually sacked to be replaced by Roberto Mancini who left to return to Manchester City so Spalletti was agreed to come back and have another go.

As you can see, English football is currently being dominated by an ever-strengthening Manchester City who now under the leadership of Roberto Mancini, they will surely continue this winning streak. On a personal, sadder note, I am gutted to see that Liverpool have achieved nothing in the time it has taken me to get Notts County to the Premier League after I had failed at Grimsby Town and Stockport County. Hopefully Spalletti’s second stint at the club will see a revival as the years are going by without them winning a significant trophy, mainly the Premier League title.
Looks like Man City have done brilliantly. Any chance you could give us a look at their dominant squad? :)

Manchester City just seem to be dominating the footballing world and I can only see it continuing for a very long time.

A Summer of Transfers

With the club now stepping up to the big league, the crème de la crème of the footballing world, it is essential that we strengthen the current squad so we can put in a good show in what is going to be a very challenging season. However, the current squad showed last season, despite it being in the Championship, that they have real quality and could cause a few upsets when competing in the Premier League. Despite this, I have felt it important to bring in a few additions, even if it is just to add depth to the squad.

Before spending the cash which the owner injected into the club as a result of our league winning season, it was important to remove any players I considered deadwood who just weren’t going to perform at the highest footballing level.

The only players of note were Callum McGregor who I had tipped to do well at Notts County. However, even though he was given numerous chances he failed to show any of the potential that he possesses. Noel Hunt had been a total flop and I was pleased that I had only signed him on a free transfer last season and that he hadn’t played enough games to earn an automatic contract renewal. David Bentley was also shown the door. He had done well in his first season at the club but with Kightly being brought in and Scougall showing real promise, he had been dropped down to the under 21 squad and his ability slowly declined.

Once the deadwood had been shown the door, and youngsters had been sent out on loan, I sat back and studied the team in depth to determine which areas needed the most improvement. It was first clear that the defence was going to need strengthening. Towards the end of last season we started to make mistakes and started to concede a few goals. The likes of Williamson and Balic are getting towards the end of their careers so it was important to invest in more defensive options. Remie Streete may be a name you recognise. The former Newcastle United player had been at a few clubs of late before coming to the end of his contract at Brentford and being released on a free transfer. Being only 23 years of age, he has great ability and potential and I hope he can strike up a good partnership with one of our key signings of the summer.

Mathias Bossaerts is a player we have had on loan from our now former parent club Manchester City, for the past two seasons. He has put in some outstanding performances on more than one occasion and at times has kept out the opponents attacking players by himself. I had been desperate to sign him last season on a permanent deal but had failed as he wasn’t interested. However, it seemed that he released he wouldn’t be breaking into the first team at City for several seasons so has moved to a club, in the same league, where he will get all the game time he wants. He is a great signing for us that has a very bright future ahead of him.

Jack Grealish is a player I was unaware of until I saw him doing extremely well in a fellow FMScouter’s story so I thought I would investigate. In the past few seasons he had had a lot of game time given to him at Aston Villa but hadn’t lived up to the hype. I am hoping that now he has joined us, at what I think is a very reasonable price of £5.5million, he can live up to the potential he has and go on to become one of our key players.

The rest of the players have simply been brought in to add depth to the squad, however, I can see Jay Spearing receiving a lot of game time as I think he could strike up a good partnership with either James Collison or James Rowe who had a great season last time out. I don’t think I will be making any more deals this summer but instead will use the left over money and pile it into the wage budget just to make it a little bit more secure.
OMG IBE:DDDD great signings mate! They can fire you to success in the prem!

I think Ibe could do well and if he does I will definitely look to sign him on a permanent deal. I really hope we do well and avoid a relegation fight!
Great signings mate! Jack Grealish is a great player and you've done well to get him for 5.5 million.

I did think it was a bit of a bargain! I hope he can come good, but he needs to start by getting McFadzean out of the squad who is always a consistent player.
Good job mate! It is bad though seeing LFC struggle badly in the league. They are underrated imo. Good luck in the prem. I'm sure you'll do great in your first season!
A quick question, how is Sebastian Coates doing after his injury? Did he ever reach his potential?

I am also quite disappointed to see Liverpool doing so badly and prating about with their swapping of managers over the past few seasons. Unfortunately Coates didn't last long at Liverpool and I haven't taken the time out to track him down. I have never rated him that highly on the game, never mind in the real world.

Pre-Season:A Promising Future

It is essential that when numerous changes are made to a squad, that they are given time to gel with their new team mates and settle into their new surroundings. The club has gone through a partial revamp with a number of youngsters going out on loan while a few additions have been brought into the club to add depth and quality to a squad that is brimming with confidence after our success last season. However, the “gelling” of the new team mates can go one of two ways. It could go without a hitch with the players settling into the team’s way of playing and contribute to the performances from the start. On the other hand, they could fail to adapt their preferred style of play to match that of the club they are playing for. Despite this possibility, you can’t help but look at the results from pre-season and believe that they all settled in very quickly.

What needs to be considered is the calibre of the team that we came up against. A number of the clubs have taken part in European football but have only achieved this by taking part in “lesser” leagues compared to the English Premier League. However, they are not seen as major clubs in European football which could be said the same as us. For us to win as many games as we did in pre-season shows that the club has a lot of promise for the coming season and may be able to avoid relegation like we are predicted to experience for the majority of the season. However, when you look at our first few games, you can’t help but already say we are destined to suffer relegation and head back down to the Championship. Between August and October, we will come up against Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Arsenal. They are going to be extremely difficult challenges and they are not ones I can see us coming away from with anything about from loss after loss. I will set the team out with a positive attitude and instructions to stick to our normal style of play that served us so well last season. This in conjunction with the new signings and after September has passed, it could be a positive season that will provide our fans with a few memorable moments to savour for years to come.
