March: Unbeaten Short Month...
Now we are heading into the latter stages of the season, it is vital that we are getting as many points on the board as we can. I am proud of the players for closing the gap between us and league rivals, Manchester City to just one point but there is still a lot of work to do. Now the FA Cup and Capital One Cup journeys are over for this season, the league title takes sole priority around the club. However, this task has become more difficult because of our poor performances against Liverpool and Chelsea this month, who we beat comfortably earlier in the season.
Unfortunately at the club at the moment we are lacking quality on the bench. Our starting line up is very strong. Jerome Sinclair is doing brilliantly upfront and is joint third top scorer in the league this season behind young starlets Mark Casey (Manchester City) and Henk Herder (Manchester United). Sinclair is also third in the list of players who have received the most Man of the Match awards this season. Alexandr Kokorin has done well when Sinclair has been jaded and has the fourth best shots on target ratio in the league. None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for Zeli Ismail, who I am desperately trying to get to sign a new contract without paying over the odds on his wage, and Jack Grealish. Ismail has provided twelve assists and I am confident that if Grealish hadn’t been as fatigued as he has been in the past few games, he would definitely have more than the ten assists he has got to his name.
I am hoping that our lads can continue to perform at the highest level, which is what we need to do week in and week out for the rest of the season if we are going to win the league title, which is still a real possibility. I think if the club is going to continue to challenge in the league and compete in various cup competitions (including the Champions League next season (maybe)) then the club is going to have to invest in quality back up players. The difficulty with this is what any manager experiences and that is that players want game time and not to be sat on the bench game after game. This is something I have experienced with Thomas Carroll who has decided he doesn’t want to sign a new contract due the lack of the games; he won’t even engage in discussions but instead has stated he will leave at the end of the season. Thankfully Tomas Kalas has been convinced to stay and sign a new contract which should see him see out the majority of the rest of his career at the club. He is the kind of quality that we need to have as backup to the preferred starting eleven. The only stumbling block I can see in our way is the board of directors. Yes Mike Ashley is gone but this chairman seems to be even more stingy...
