Continued Change...
With a number of players leaving the club and with pre-season fast approach, I felt it necessary to delve into the transfer market in order to sign replacements. Despite the club possessing excellent training facilities, the junior coaching side of the club is average. This means that the club is still yet to see any players come through the youth system with any real potential of breaking into the first team. I would quite happily play youngsters in my first team, even in big games, if they were up to the challenge but unfortunately they are not. This has caused concern for me as the chairman, David Evans, has come across as just as stingy as Mike Ashley was back in the day. This led me to believe that funds would not be made available for any transfer dealings.
Despite having made the club a reasonable £11.38 million from selling players, the board only inject forty percent of any sales back into the transfer and wage budget. This would be of greater concern if it hadn’t been for our success last season. Due to us winning the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history, the board decided to inject a reasonable amount of money into the kitty for me to spend under no restrictions...just what any manager wants to hear!
First port of call was to provide decent backup for Jerome Sinclair who was outstanding last season. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel has left the club and Alexandr Kokorin has never filled me with confidence when playing in the striker position despite scoring some important goals last season. This led me to Christos Mantalos. Signed for £2.3 million he boasts the potential of becoming a four star rated player and a leading striker for any Premier League club. I am confident he can achieve this as he will receive game time to Sinclair’s tendency to have an inconsistent period later in the season.
In order to fill the gap left by the moody Thomas Carroll, Tiziano Tulissi has been brought in for maybe the over inflated price of £16.5 million from Paris Saint-Germain. Tulissi had never broken into their first team squad but instead had spent a lot of time at Sampdoria on loan and he had a very successful time at Ajax. He has great ability and even better potential. I can see him slotting into the attacking midfielder role and not only providing goals but also scoring them.
I have rarely reached the point in save where I have to sign regen players; I have usually got bored of the save. This means that I am heading into the unknown. Marcelo has had four brilliant seasons for Castilla and has shown good potential. He has however been brought into the club under false pretences. He believes he will be getting game time on a regular basis but I can only promise him to be back up to the more experienced and better Tomas Kalas. This may cause issues between Marcelo and the club but having only signed him for £1.5 million, I am confident I could move him on for a profit.
Ibrahim Aurier has been brought in to provide solid back up for Jamaal Lascelles and Marcus Berglund who did start to tire towards the end of last season. After overcoming difficulties with his work permit, he has signed for us for £3.8 million. With him only being 21, and having signed a 5 year contract, he is with us for the foreseeable future. He will get game time and not just in cup competitions. Lascelles is my number one centre back and I will look to rotate Berglund and Aurier when it is needed. I am confident Aurier will prosper in a few seasons to come and I am looking forward to witnessing it.
Alexey Volkov may be another regen that I have paid over the odds for. However, last season we lacked backup players for the central midfielder positions. John Lundstram (now vice-captain) came in and did a great job but Suso spent a lot of the season injured and Thomas Carroll just wasn’t interested. The addition of Volkov now means the club boasts at least four central midfielders to choose from to fill two available positions. This provides good backup if we suffer injuries, which Volkov already has, and can still look to control the midfield which I like to do.
In total £33.99 million has been spent on strengthening the squad and has left us with little money left in the budget. This means that unless I feel the need to add any more players the squad for the upcoming season is below:
