BREAKING NEWS: PAT FENLON LEAVES HIBS
We have breaking news coming through from Edinburgh tonight. The Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon has resigned as the manager of Hibernian Football Club. Fenlon leaving comes as no surprise as Hibs have been on a poor run of form recently. Not only did they fail to make the top 6 in the league last season but they also lost their second consecutive Scottish Cup Final, a competition which has alluded them since 1902, 3-0 to league champions Celtic.
Fenlon, pictured above after the Scottish Cup Final defeat, believes he has taken Hibernian as far as he could and felt the time was right to go.
“It's a difficult decision for me, but it's the right decision, I think a lot of the negativity is towards me at the moment, so if I take myself out of the firing line it will help everybody else." said the 44-year-old, who took over two years ago.
"I don't want to let people down and the club have been 100% behind me in every way. I still think I had the backing of the club. I've been privileged to manage this fantastic football club and I really hope it does kick on now, I'm convinced that we have improved the football side of the club a lot. We've got a real good squad there, real good players and good staff. This is a really enjoyable place to work, with great people, and that's what makes it difficult to leave. I think it's a good time for someone to come in and hopefully kick us on." Fenlon, who leaves with a 35% winning record from 87 games also managed Shelbourne, Derry City and Bohemians, lifting the League of Ireland title on five occasions, before he replaced Colin Calderwood in the Easter Road dugout.
Hibernian will now be looking for their 7th Manager in 10 years. Many see the position as a poisoned chalice but there have still been some big names linked with the post such as former Managers Tony Mowbray and Alex Mcleish, former Scotland Manager Craig Levein has also been linked. The favourite amongst the bookies and the fans though is ex-England captain and current Inverness Caledonian Thistle manager Terry Butcher.
