The Team Report and Tactics

Having less than 5 hours to go until the first game against Fulham, I had a lot of work to do. The issue with the club so far it seemed was a lack of fluidity and organisation on the pitch. I aimed to really sharpen up the midfield and defence. By doing so we can stay tighter at the back and win the ball back more effectively. Keith came in and went through the team report with me, showing me we have a very good team. Key players are likely to be Yannick Bolasie, Adrian Mariappa, Jack Hunt and Marouane Chamakh.

There is some decent youth in the team and they will get a chance to prove themselves as well. Sometimes a bit of determination from the youth brings out the best in everyone around them and hopefully they can show they’ve got something to offer in the fight against the drop.

Tactics have always been a key part of the game and I know people think I’m a physical, long ball tactic specialist but the truth is I enjoy the finer touches of the game as well and believe I can show the public and those who doubted me that in fact I can get my teams to play slick football when we want.

With 2 defensive midfielders, I feel this tactic is setting us up to contain the opposition and his them on the counter. The wingers will be very important as well as the deep lying playmaker.

The second one I think will enable us to keep the ball more and control games we should be controlling. The midfield has a very important job in retaining possession and recycling it to the wings.

I really believe this group of players can adapt quickly to these tactics and make a difference to the style of football we’ve been playing. Glenn Murray was outstanding last year and if he can come back from injury and contribute in a similar fashion at the turn of the year, along with strong performances from the rest of the squad we will be just fine.

Once I had discussed the team report and tactics with Keith, I called the players in for the first team meeting. I decided to lead with the fact that I think this squad is much more capable than they have been showing of late and I truly believe we can stay up. The positivity in that message was received brilliantly and the reaction from the boys in front of me was excellent. Within such a short period of time I could see they needed that push and slowly their belief is returning.
I like Damien Delaney
and i am liking where this is going :)

Very nice update and tactics, too, surprisingly fluid from Tony this time around ;)
Bolasie is decent? :O Good luck with this K1 and those tactics look really good.

The Wheeling and Dealing Starts

Before the game with Fulham I found myself with some time I didn’t think I had. I decided to put this to good use and be productive, assessing the clubs weak areas and working out any transfers that could happen. The free transfer market was still open and I had already gotten two emails from agents in the morning stating they had players who might fit Crystal Palace, or at least be good squad additions. I got to thinking and realised the squad was way too big and had to be trimmed down before we added anyone else. And with that in mind, I decided over the next few weeks players would be leaving. I started with Florian Marange. Ian had bought him in but left him out of the initial 25 man squad and he wasn’t going to play for me so I released him on a free transfer. Kwesi Appiah was another who was cut loose as he wasn’t going to make it as a youngster. I decided I would give two players a week to show me whether they were cut out for this level – Elliot Grandin and Paddy McCarthy. Paddy was the captain before I turned up but I decided that Mile Jedinak was a better choice and in fact Paddy was losing it as he got older. Jimmy Kébé was the final player I marked out to potentially leave and that meant I cleared up a lot of space in the squad for those two players I had emails about.

After making up my mind, I called their agents and agreed contract deals for them both until the end of the season. And just like that we now had Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Yossi Benayoun. Hopefully they can make some contribution to the team over the next 6 months. I also had around £9 million left in the transfer budget and submitted bids for Aaron Cresswell and Tom Ince. Both would significantly bolster the left side of our team and would definitely be starters if they were to join. This could mean some other players find themselves on their way out come January. I’ve already transfer listed goalkeeper Neil Alexander, defender Darcy Blake, midfielders Owen Garvan and Stephen Dobbie and strikers Aaron Wilbraham and Kevin Phillips. All of these players will either leave in January or in the summer on free transfers.

We have a big run of games coming up and we need to pull together. There are some very winnable games and we have to make the most of the poor form of teams around us.

There were also some major staff changes. 5 members of staff found themselves on the way out and better coaches who will make a better impact on our youth and first team replaced all. The quality of training has improved and we are making steps in the right direction, not just as a team but also as a club.

Nice update, good to see you getting rid of the oldies. Jedinak was really good for me in FM13, so hopefully he'll do well for you.

Benayoun should be a decent addition, give you some PL experience and Tom ince would be a great capture too, so hopefully you can pull that signing off!

If you could get Tom Ince it would be great, also Benayoun is just the kind of player Palace need. Someone with lots of experience. Great update as well.
Leave Tom Ince alone - he's happy at the mighty Pool :P

On another note, another quality update, keep them coming!

Ha.... GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! Anyways, you got some serious cash coming into the transfer window, and I easily see some 5m added with the sale of those players.
Nick: Jedinak and Benayoun have been the better players so far! Thanks for reading :)

Jozef: If Ince joins we'll have much better chances going forward

Walter: He'd rather be playing Premier League football :P

Bayern: Haha the update in this layout takes FOREVER

Jeremy: LOL well unfortunately nobody wants my players :(
