Aberdeen needed a late winner from substitute Scott Vernon to see off Kilmarnock on opening day of the Scottish Premiership.

Kieran Smyth was taking charge of his first ever competitive game in football while Allan Johnston was preparing for his first game since taking over from Kenny Shiels at Kilmarnock.

It was Aberdeen who struck first after a Peter Pawlett corner was met at the back post by Joe Shaughnessy, who guided it across the face of goal past Craig Samson in the Kilmarnock goal. The Dons lead only lasted for 5 mins when a mistake from Andrew Considine left Kris Boyd 1-on-1 with Jamie Langfield to place the ball in the bottom corner. Aberdeen then pressed on for a winner and hit the woodwork at least 3 times through Peter Pawlett's freekick, Niall McGinn's header and Nicky Low's thunderbolt. But the Dons finally broke the Killie resistance when the two substitutes Jamie Masson and Scott Vernon exchanged a 1-2 in the Killie half before Masson slid Vernon in and the Englishman produced a cool, tidy finish to win in for Aberdeen and give 16 year old Smyth his first competitive win as manager.

Aberdeen will travel away to play Rangers in what was the highest profile match in the Scottish Communities League Cup 2nd Round tie.

The Scottish League 1 leaders and the Scottish Premiership leaders were the first two out of the hat in the draw conducted by Aberdeen legend Willie Miller and ex-Rangers boss Walter Smith who ironically drew out their former club's opponents. This is the first time Rangers and Aberdeen have played each other since 2012 and the first time since Rangers were demoted into the newly-named Scottish League 2.

Other high-profile ties include an away tie for Hearts against Stranraer, Dundee United host Albion Rovers, Partick Thistle's reward will be Queen of the South at home if they can overcome East Stirling, while other Scottish Premiership sides Ross County, Kilmarnock and St Mirren all have home ties.

Aberdeen produced one of their best performances in recent years as they stunned Motherwell 5-0 away at Fir Park.

The rout began after 5 minutes when a Peter Pawlett corner was poorly cleared by Stevie Hammell into the feet of Nicky Low, who blasted home the opener from 10 yards. The worse was still to come from Hammell as a poor backpass from what was a Aberdeen free area into the Well's 18 yard box into the feet of Niall McGinn left him with the easiest of goals to give The Dons breathing space in the match. Motherwell had a few half chances through Iain Vigurs and John Sutton but none that really threatened Jamie Langfield's goal. Any hopes of a Motherwell fightback were dashed from a swift Aberdeen counter-attack as a Motherwell corner broke to Jonny Hayes on the left hand side on the half-way line and he went past 3 players before playing Dutch striker Berry Powel in to coolly slot the ball past Lee Hollis for his first goal for the club. 5 minutes later, Powel returned the favour as a Niall McGinn shot broke to Berry Powel inside the box, Powel unselfishly flicked the ball to his right for the incoming Hayes who blasted the ball into the Well goal. Motherwell's misery looked over until 5 minutes from the end when a Jonny Hayes cross fell to Scott Vernon who headed the ball past Hollis for his second of the season with both coming from off the bench. Stuart McCall's side were booed off by the supporters who had stayed till the end but for the travelling support from Aberdeen, it was nothing but cheers and delight as they celebrated with the players and Kieran Smyth who has recorded 2 wins from 2 ahead of a double header against both Old Firm sides.

Aberdeen Football Club are delighted to announce that the club has now linked up with English Premier League side Manchester City.

This link allows Aberdeen to sign Man City players on loan without any cost at all while Man City can make an offer for an Aberdeen player should Aberdeen receive and accept an offer.

Aberdeen have already taken advantage of this link and are proud to announce the season-long loan signing of Manchester City's youngster Enock Kwakwa. Enock is a very promising player brought through the Manchester City academy. He can play centre midfield or defensive midfield and is Kieran Smyth's second signing since the teen took charge of the club. After becoming a Dons player, Enock expressed his delight to Red TV at making the switch to the Dons for the season.

"I feel happy to be here, this is a great club and I hope to get chances here for more first team football and help Aberdeen do very well" Enock said. Enock will wear the No.26 jersey for Aberdeen and is available for the Celtic match.

Smyth described the Red's new signing as a "great talent who can offer a lot to the Aberdeen cause and can only get better with more game time".

Aberdeen defeated Celtic 2-1 at Pittodrie thanks to a Jonny Hayes double which preserves Aberdeen's 100% record in the Scottish Premiership while Celtic are still looking for their first win of the league campaign.

Celtic thought today would be their day after an early goal from Mikael Lustig sent them in front. From there on in, it was all Celtic and they could count themselves unlucky to only be 1 up after Scott Brown, Teemu Pukki and Yossi Benayoun were denied by Jamie Langfield. Langfield's saves would prove to be crucial in the 13th minute. A brilliant run from Peter Pawlett opened up the Celtic defence and Hayes was slipped in by Pawlett to convert the ball past Fraser Forster to level the game. They were only level for 4 minutes before Hayes struck again. This time it was all his own work as he got away from Emilio Izaguirre and Virgil Van Dijk to beat Forster in the Celtic goal again to give the Dons the lead. The major talking point occurred with 25 minutes to go when Josh Magennis received a second yellow and a red card for a late challenge on Teemu Pukki. Celtic had chances after this to equalise through Van Dijk and Brown while Aberdeen also had chances to end the games through McGinn and Low. Aberdeen eventually held out and bagged maximum points for the third game running.

The result leaves Kieran Smyth's men at the top of the Scottish Premiership on 9 points while Celtic have now dropped to 10th place, with only 2 points from 3 games and no wins this season.

A hat trick for Niall McGinn was the main highlight as Aberdeen cruised to their 4th win of the season.

Michael Hector scored in his first start of the Dons while a Ryan Stevenson goal just after half-time offered the Jambos hope at 2-1 but it turned out to be the only thing Hearts offered to the game.

It took 9 minutes for Aberdeen to break the deadlock and it was a familiar story as a Peter Pawlett corner was met by an Aberdeen centre back, this time it was the turn of Michael Hector to score for Aberdeen and give them the lead. Then the star man began to shine. 14 minutes later, Jonny Hayes slid in Niall McGinn and the Northern Ireland international brilliantly converted the ball past Mark Ridgers to give the Dons some breathing space in the match. However, Hearts were not out the game just yet and 3 minutes into the second half, Ryan Stevenson produced a wonder goal from 30 yards to give Hearts a lifeline and sprung life into the young Hearts squad. However, Hearts possibility of a comeback only lasted 2 minutes. Niall McGinn took control of the ball on the halfway-line and dribbled past 3 Hearts players before stabbing the ball home. McGinn completed his hat-trick after Peter Pawlett was pulled down by Kevin McHattie in the box and McGinn stepped up to get his 3rd of the match and his 4th of the season already.

The result leaves Aberdeen top of the league with maximum points from 4 games while Hearts still linger on -14 points after only gaining 1 point so far this season.

10 men Rangers produced a shock in the Second Round of the Scottish League Cup after defeating Scottish Premiership leaders Aberdeen 2-1 at Ibrox.

Goals from Lee McCulloch and Tom Walsh in each half was enough to see off Aberdeen who had a consolation through Niall McGinn. Rangers had Kyle Hutton sent off after seeing two yellows in the first half-hour of the match but did not affect Rangers performance as they look ahead to tomorrow's draw.

Aberdeen made 7 changes to the side that comfortably disposed of Hearts in their last league game with Langfield, Considine, Hector and Reynolds the only survivors of that side.

The game began cagey and very few chances were created in the first half but the game's turning point occurred in the 30 when Kyle Hutton, who had received a yellow 3 minutes previous, was given a second yellow for a late tackle on Aberdeen debutant Enock Kwakwa. This inspired the home time on and they got their reward at the end of the half. A corner from Lee Wallace was met at the front post by Lee McCulloch who put enough power on his header to beat Jamie Langfield. Aberdeen brought on Pawlett and McGinn to change the game but 90 seconds into the half, the game was over. Lee McCulloch cleared an Aberdeen corner and Jamie Masson's failure to win the ball left Tom Walsh in on goal with Langfield to slot the ball past Langfield to give Rangers a 2 goal lead. Aberdeen immediately replied when McGinn curled in an effort from 25 yards to offer Aberdeen hope but the Gers resistance was enough to hold out the Premiership leaders and send Rangers into the Third Round.

This is the second year in a row Rangers have dumped out the team that has lead the top league in the League Cup after beating Motherwell 2-0 last year. This is Kieran Smyth's first competitive defeat as Aberdeen manager and the teenager maybe feels tempted to go into the transfer market with 72 hours to go in this window.

As Transfer Deadline day approaches, we take a look at potential transfers in and out of ABERDEEN.

Aberdeen have successfully completed a triple swoop after securing Cypriot striker Michalis Konstantinou, Congo international Herita Ilunga and English winger David Bentley all on free transfers.

This takes Aberdeen's tally of signings up to 5 with 3 done on deadline day. Konstantinou completed his signing to the Dons after arriving from Cyprus on a early flight to finish proceedings as quickly as possible. No sooner had Konstantinou left, Herita Ilunga and David Bentley arrived almost simultaneously at Aberdeen's training ground and completing their transfers to the Scottish Premiership leaders.
