Tottenham Hotspur today called a press conference to unveil Osvaldo Ardilles, their new manager, after the departure of Andre Villas-Boas who is looking to the continent for a new job, with reported interest from both PSG and Real Madrid, after he lead Spurs to a club-record 72 points as they finished 5th last season.
Ardilles answered questions from various sports news providers, including Sky Sports, BBC Sport, The Sun, The Telegraph and The Guardian.
SSN: “Hi there Ozzie; How does it feel to be back at White Hart Lane, on a permanent basis?”
OA: “It’s a great feeling; i’m excited to get started in training and return this club to great heights where we deserve to be.”
SSN: “And how do you feel about the way the revenue from the sale of Gareth Bale has been spent?”
OA: “It’s not for me to comment on how that money was spent; the squad I have is the squad which I will have to work with; it is a good squad, and there is still some money in the bank if I see fit to spend it.”
BBC: “Hi Ossie, Phil McNulty here from BBC News: Can you shed any light on any areas of your squad you’re going to be looking to strengthen?”
OA: “Sorry Phil, that’s not something i’m going to discuss in a press conference, now, or at any point in the future; I wouldn’t jeopardize any potential bids in that manner.”
BBC: “That’s fair enough; what do you make of the young talent within the squad? Will we be seeing any of them in the starting line-up in the near future?”
OA: “Again, my squad selections aren’t something i’m going to discuss; each side will be selected based on the opponent we are playing, and who is fit, performing well in training and impressing; they will not be chosen based on merit or media pressure.”
TS: “I don’t suppose you’d be willing to discuss how your team will be playing this season?”
OA: “Well, this i’m more prepared to discuss - My team will be focussing on keeping the ball, and exploiting the attacking talent within the team. The more of the ball we see, the less chances the opposition will have.”
TT: “Do you not sense a risk in that strategy if perhaps opposition players press you high up the pitch?”
OA: “Of course we will prepare that eventuality; football is not a game in which a team and their manager can be static; we must be dynamic and prepared for every game, to counter the specific threats posed by our opponents.”
TG: “What’s your prediction for this season? And Indeed what have the board asked of you?”
OA: “The board have asked me to ensure the club qualify for continental football this season, which I think is well within our capabilities. Personally, I think Manchester City and Chelsea will be the sides to watch this season, although if they’re careful, Liverpool could spring some surprises.”
With that, the Press Officer wrapped up the press conference, and Tottenham fans were taking to twitter to voice their approval of the new appointment
