Trio Pen Contracts at Amex

Donald Vaughan has confirmed the arrival of three players at The Amex this afternoon. Having strongly hinted that a deal was close to completion for Port Vale striker Tom Pope, the inexperienced manager signs last years Sky Bet League 2 lead goalscorer for a fee of £300,000. Pope was a key player in Vale's promotion winning season, and attracted interest from several other Championship and League One teams.

But a deal that nobody expected was also pulled off by the 27-year-old from Hackney. The father of two has also managed to complete a deal for Norwegian centre back, Stefan Strandberg. The 22-year-old defender had played for Norwegian side Rosenborg since 2012, making several impressive performances for the 22 time Tippeligaen winners. He joins for a fee of £425,000 but Vaughan admits he offered the Lyndgal-born player a contract that he couldn't turn down to ward off interest from Premier League club Aston Villa.

"Stefan is a fantastic player, and I am delighted to be able to bring him here. Unfortunately it means that a couple of the other lads may leave, like Matty Upson, but he will understand that Stefan is a much better option for the team. I was told of Villa's interest in Stefan by his agent, Christoffer Stensholt, and I knew that I didn't want to lose out on him, so I went back and revised the contract terms that I'd offered him. Stefan will see that he made the right decision soon enough when we make it to the Premier League."

And the spending doesn't stop there. Also joining Brighton and Hove Albion is Fraser Aird, formerly of Rangers. Aird was born in Canada, but is currently eligible for Scotland only. The 18-year-old was bought by Brighton's Head of Youth Development, John Morling, for a fee of £205,000. Aird is seen by the coaching staff at Brighton as a player for the future, but the winger, who made 19 league appearances for Rangers last season following their drop to the Scottish League Two, could feature more than expected if he performs well in training, according to Morling.

"Fraser seems like a big talent to me. I'd watched him several times in the youth team while Rangers were still in the SPL, and I was impressed. I'm not totally convinced he will be ready for this level just yet, but I may change my mind on that after a few training sessions. Donald was very co-operative when I asked him for the go ahead to put the bid in for Aird, and I'm looking forward to his time in charge here."
Aird looks a mighty good prospect and good signings, your getting a decent squad together
Great signings mate, Strandberg in particular!
Very good signings man! UP THE GULLS!

Pre-season Friendlies 2013-2014

Brighton went undefeated in the pre-season, which showed signs of good things to come. A narrow win over their reserve squad in the opener with a goal from Argentine David Ulloa got them off to a good start, but two frustrating draws against Dutch teams FC Emmen and Helmond Sport brought them back to normality. However, they finished the pre-season strongly, with wins against Volendam and Worthing, with new signing Tom Pope scoring his first goal for the club, and fellow signing Stefan Strandberg helping the team out to keep two clean sheets in the final two games.

The team strung attacks together very neatly in the games where goals were scored, and limited the amount of goals conceded very well. Could this be the beginning of something special for Brighton?

Former PSV Eindhoven Defender Joins Brighton

Manolev in action for Fulham during his unsuccessful loan spell last season. He made just 5 appearances.

Brighton and Hove Albion have announced the signing of Bulgarian defender Stanislav Manolev, on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old fullback was released from PSV Eindhoven at the end of last season, prompting several clubs to battle it out for Manolev's signature.

It was reported that Brighton faced fierce competition from Wigan Athletic, FC Lorient, Empoli and KRC Genk. Manolev's agent also revealed that Brighton were not able to match his clients' demands initially, and things had once looked like they were going to fall apart, but Donald Vaughan revived the deal late on.

The player spent last season on loan at Barclays Premier League side Fulham, but failed to make an impact. He has been capped 31 times by his national side.

"There were certain points when I felt like we were going to have to pull out of discussions - Stanislav's wage demands were much higher than Brighton were willing to offer, but Donald threw in a few bonuses to sweeten the deal. Stanislav is very happy to have joined the club, and looks forward to his future here."
A solid pre-season mate! And Manolev is a very good signing!
Very good signing there! :)

August Results 2013

The Seagulls kicked off their Sky Bet Championship with a clash away to Leeds United at Elland Road. Early signs shown from this game were that Vaughan was looking to play possession football here, and it worked. However, Noel Hunt gave the boys a scare early on as he tapped Ross McCormack's low cross past Tomasz Kuszczak to give Leeds the advantage. We couldn't find an equalizer, and the match went to half time.

Vaughan made one substitution at the break, bringing new signing Tom Pope on for David Rodríguez. When fullback Bruno swung a hopeful looking cross towards Stephen Ward, the Irishman headed it on to winger Will Buckley, who managed to find the equalizer. And minutes later, Vaughan's faith in Pope paid off. Dale Stephens played a ball to David López on the edge of the area. The Spaniard threaded a first time through ball into Pope's path, and the £300,000 man won the game for The Gulls. Ward won the Man of the Match award for his assist and fantastic defensive display.

Having been drawn at home to Coventry City in the opening round of the Capital One Cup, our boys looked to carry on from their impressive win over Leeds United in manager Donald Vaughan's first game as a professional manager. Pope was the hero once again, coming off of the bench at half time to net the winner. Ward turned in another Man of the Match performance. An away tie against Doncaster Rovers was set up in the next round.

Our toughest challenge so far came in the shape of Derby County, as we looked to get our first league win at The Amex. Jeff Hendrick scored first to put the pressure on, but moments later, Argentinian striker Leonardo Ulloa drew us level, finishing coolly from Bruno's cross. It went to half time all square.

Once again, Pope was brought on at half time... and made an impact, putting us into the lead. Richard Keogh blasted the ball against the 27-year-old's body on the edge of the Derby County penalty area. Pope instantly reacted, taking the ball into the area. Initially, he hit the post, but followed in on the rebound to put us into the lead for the first time. However, minutes from the full time whistle, Derby leveled, Craig Bryson nodding Jobi McAnuff's cross into the net. It looked like it was heading for a draw.

That was until Kuszczak's long kick up the field found Ulloa, he took the ball down, and smashed into the net, with just ten seconds of play to go. Leonardo won the Man of the Match award, and without his goalscoring efforts in this game, we would have lost.

Our second away trip in the league this month, this time we faced Birmingham City. But we instantly let them know that the home advantage meant nothing, when Ulloa fired home his third goal in two games, heading in Buckley's cross with ease. However, Andrew Shinnie had the Midlands club level soon after with a superb 25 yard free-kick, which Kuszczak had no chance of saving. David López put us back into the lead before half time when his shot from the edge of the area was only parried into the net by the Birmingham goalkeeper Randolph.

Tom Pope was once again brought on at half time, but made less of an impact than he did in previous games. There were no chances in the second half until Ulloa was pulled down by Paul Caddis inside the penalty area in the third minute of stoppage time. David López stepped up to take the penalty, and bagged his second goal of the game. No prizes for guessing the Man of the Match, and the Spaniard helped us to our third successive league win.

Another tough test at home here, this time up against the boys from Burnley. The promotion favourites were two down at half time, however, and never recovered. Our first goal came from Ulloa, as the in-form striker bagged another goal, heading in Bruno's cross. Stephen Ward sealed the game off a minute before the interval, as Tom Pope, starting for the first time in a Brighton shirt, swung a cross in. It was a tame cross, but the Burnley defender panicked, and Ward reacted first to make it 2-0. The Irishman won his third Man of the Match award of the month.

Following our win at home to Coventry to reach this stage, we headed into the Capital One Cup second round unbeaten under Vaughan's management. David López gave us the lead away to Doncaster very early on. Mesca gave the ball away to David Rodríguez on the edge of the area. The Spaniard found his fellow countryman, and López finished the move off.

The second half was trickier than the first, however, and as Billy Sharp bagged a brace to give his side the lead, things looked bleak for The Gulls. That was until the 89th minute, when substitute Kazenga LuaLua headed home at the far post from Rodríguez's cross to level the tie. There was no score in Extra Time, and so on to penalties we went.

The boys scored all five of their penalties, and then it was down to Tomasz Kuszczak to be the hero. And so he was, saving Gabriel Tamaș' penalty to win us the tie. We have been awarded a home tie against West Bromwich Albion for our efforts. Sharp won the Man of the Match award for his second half brace.

We were expecting another win here, but it wasn't to be, and we came crashing down to our first defeat under Vaughan. At home to Millwall, we were brought back down to earth following our fantastic start. We were on the back foot from the very beginning of the game, and we could have lost by a larger deficit had Millwall's Canadian striker Simeon Jackson taken his chances. In the end, we were defeated by a late goal from Man of the Match, Lee Martin. Paul McGowan played a fantastic first time ball over the heads of our defence, and Martin finished low past Kuszczak. It was our first loss, but a great start to the season nonetheless.

Top 12 as of 1/9/13

So after one month of football, we are top, clear by two points. We are delighted to announce that Donald Vaughan has been named as the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for leading the team to four wins out of five in the league. We look forward to what the future holds.
Very nice updates mate, nice to see you doing well in the league :)
Magnificent start!
Great start mate.

September Results 2013

After steaming ahead in the first month, The Seagulls couldn't have wished for a worse follow-on in September. We managed to pick up just two points from a possible twelve in the league, which means that we drop from the top of the league, to just outside a Playoff Place, and this is something that needs working on, and quickly. As a fan of the club, I was pleasantly surprised with the draw away to Reading, as I really saw us losing that game. But the Queens Park Rangers game was the turning point in the month. Following that game, we just completely lost the spirit to win. The Bolton game was really one that we should be winning, and the complacency that we showed in the Ipswich Town game, to lose after going a goal ahead, was extremely disappointing. The main thing that annoyed many of us fans was that lack of goals scored. Prior to the Ipswich game, we hadn't scored in five games. And it wasn't even one of our own players that scored the goal, which makes it all the more worrying. We have to regain the form that we showed throughout most of last month if we are to have a shot at achieving promotion. Now, many of the fans are disappointed with the signing of Tom Pope, but I am happy with the man that Vaughan has brought in. He hasn't been amazing, but last month, he scored three important goals, and it's as if a lot of our fans are using him as a scapegoat for the teas failings this month, when in my opinion, the faults are clearly elsewhere. The most notable failure has been David Rodríguez. He hasn't scored a single goal following his arrival, and this is one of the reasons for our failings so far.

So, it was disappointing that we've dropped so far, but we have faith in the side to turn this around.
Not a great month, but you are still in the top half of the table so nothing to worry about yet :)
Great start, but you couldn't handle the 2nd one .-... I wish you the best, hopefully automatic promotion is on the horizon, as play-offs is too stressful!
