Promotion candidates Mallorca hire Koeman after two months out of football

Liga Adelante side Mallorca have announced that Ronald Koeman will replace former boss Johan Neeskens as club manager.

Neeskens left last month [January] when a contract offer from French Ligue 1 side Montpellier Herault SC was tabled, and the Dutchman left for France. Neeskens had guided Mallorca to third place in the Liga Adelante table, and during the absence of a permanent manager, the team have moved up to second place in the league standings.

Neeskens is replaced by fellow countryman Ronald Koeman, who was recently sacked by Barclays Premier League side Southampton following a falling out with the owner of the club, Katharina Liebherr.

Asier Garitano, manager of bottom placed team Leganes has admitted to MARCA that he was surprised at the appointment following his abrupt departure from Southampton.

"It is a little odd - Mallorca are a team that are getting good results consistently, and that's not something that Ronald was achieving at Southampton. I'm not disputing his ability as a manager, but I was just a little surprised at the speed at which they appointed Johan's successor - this is a man who was sacked from his last club due to an argument with the owners, so they are taking a risk, definitely."

Koeman has dismissed Garitano's doubts, however, and has hit back at the Spaniard's comments.

"Firstly, I am delighted to have been given the opportunity here at Mallorca - I had wanted to get back into football management quickly following my departure from Southampton, and Mallorca seem to be a club that is growing, and it is good to be a part of that. I hope that I can carry them over the finish line, after all of the work that Johan, the coaching team and the players have put in, promotion should not be difficult. As for Asier's comments, I don't think he is in a position to comment with the position that Leganes hold in the league. I completely disagree with what he was trying to say as well, I am more than ready for the job."
Decent club, I think you can get promoted with Mallorca! Good luck at your club!
Good choice

A good start with your new team mate! hopefully you can hit a good run of form and vindicate yourself :)

Portuguese duo sign for RCD Mallorca as promotion edges closer

Liga Adelante side RCD Mallorca have announced the signing of former Portugal internationals Simão and César Peixoto.

Although both will be ineligible until the start of the new season which is months away, new manager Ronald Koeman is adamant that they can be just as important off of the pitch as they could be on it.

Both players sign for Mallorca as free agents. Peixoto most recently played for Gil Vicente in the Primeira Liga, but had previously played for Porto and Benfica. He has only been capped once by Portugal, unlike the more reputable Simão, who played 85 times for his country between 1998 and 2010. Simão's previous clubs include Sporting Lisbon, Atletico Madrid, and most impressively Barcelona.

Simão has spent a large amount of his career in Spain, which may make it easier for him to settle in at Mallorca. With Atletico Madrid, he won the UEFA Europa League in 2010, and the UEFA Super Cup in the same year. During the 2006/2007 season, he was named as the LPFP Primeira Liga Player of the Year - the award has been won by the likes of PSG's David Luiz and Zenit Saint Petersburg's Hulk.

Koeman said the following: "What Simão and César bring to the club is special. We know that we will be without them on the field for a while now, but their experience will rub off on the other players, and they can certainly help out with the development of the younger players. Simão's career has been decorated with awards, and I am positive that with him and César at the club, those awards and trophies will continue to come - I look forward to using the both of them next season, when we will hopefully be in La Liga."
Good results, and I'm sure that the two transfers will help!
Interesting to see this managerial switch. Simao should be decent in the Liga Adelante :)
This'll be interesting! I really like Mallorca, they seem like they could be a fun team :) good luck!
Nice signing there! Mallorca should be a fun team to manage, considering they always go up to BBVA, then relegate, then go back up. Let's see if you can keep them up!
You have good results, and you mentally atop luck! I hope to promote!
Just need to get a few more points under the belt and I think that should be you home and dry, good luck!
