Yeah, I'm aiming for the second spot, seeing as Napoli have got some very hard matches at the end (Lazio, Juventus, AC Milan)
Best of luck, 2nd place is defo in the cards
Juve definitely look to have pulled away

Review:
April was a very hard month for Roma, as the team played Juventus away, AC Milan at home and Udinese away all in this month. To cap it off, the team did have an easier match: at home against Sassuolo. Roma kicked off April with the away match against Juventus, and just before half time Fernando Llorente put the league leaders in front. 10 minutes after the start of the second half, Llorente scored again to put his team 2-0 in front. 2 minutes later, Bonucci gave Juventus a three-goal advantage, a scoreline that really reflected Juventus’s dominance in the match.

Next was a home match against AC Milan, a match where Roma could prove that they were also able to win big matches with their strikerless formation, something they didn’t show in the match against Juventus. But Roma didn’t get off to the best of starts, as Niang scored the 1-0 after only 20 seconds. In the second half, Roma were a lot better, and Tello scored the equaliser very early in the second half. When Garmash got sent off for Milan in the 75th minute, Roma knew that they could go more attacking, and they did. After 80 minutes Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan put his team 2-1 up.

After these two very hard matches, Roma played a bit of an easier match, away against Udinese. The normally solid team have been bad this season, and they were 16th at the time. Also at the Friuli stadium – where Udinese were usually one of the hardest teams to beat in Serie A – they’ve lost a lot of points. And again, it looked like Udinese were going to drop points at their own stadium when Dodô put the away side 1-0 up just before half-time. In the 57th minute however, Matej Vydra equalised for Guidolin’s team: 1-1. 1-1 was the final score, and Napoli were now 5 points ahead of Roma.

Finishing off April, was a home match against relegation candidates Sassuolo. Roma had to win to keep Napoli in sight. Because Napoli’s last four matches were very difficult, Roma still had a chance to finish 2nd if they won all matches. But after only eight minutes, Okaka-Chuka put the away side in front. 6 minutes later however, Pjanic scored an awesome free kick: the Bosnian smashed a free kick from about 23 yards out into the top left corner. Just after half-time, Roma took a one-goal lead through another great Pjanic goal. This time, it was a great passing move by the entire team. But Okaka-Chuka quickly equalised for Sassuolo with his second goal of the game: 2-2. In the 75th minute, Pjanic completed his hat-trick with a possibly vital goal in Roma’s hunt for the second place. The goal didn’t turn out that vital in the match, as Roma eventually won with 4-2 through a late goal by left-back Balzaretti.

Player of the Month(s):
Former Barça player Cristian Tello has been in good form the past few matches, scoring one goal and assisting two.

Serie A table:
Some real tough games, against some top sides. Unlucky against Juve, but a great result against AC Milan!
Pretty tough month...but you can still finish second!

Review:
The last month of the season, and Roma really had only one goal: win all matches. Because Napoli’s hard last three matches (Juventus away, AC Milan home and Udinese away), Roma still had quite a big chance to finish 2nd, should they win their last three matches (Cagliari away, Bologna home and Avellino away). The first match of May was an away match against Cagliari, who were in 11th. But after only 3 minutes, Igboun put the home team 1-0 up. In the 36th minute, Bertolacci rounded off a great counter attack to get Roma their much deserved equaliser. Just after an hour of play, Zaza put Cagliari 2-1 up, and Roma looked down and out of the second place battle. When Ekdal scored in the 72nd minute, Roma looked like they were out. But after 78 minutes, Tello gave the fans some hope with a close-range goal: 3-2. When Saponara scored the 3-3 in the 86th minute after a horrible mistake by the Cagliari defence, nothing seemed impossible for Cañizares’ men. But they didn’t score, and the final score was 3-3. Roma were now 4 points behind Napoli with 2 matches remaining.

Next was a home match against mid-table Bologna, a match that had to be won. If Napoli drew or lost their home game against AC Milan, Roma were still in the battle. If Napoli won, Roma would have to play play-offs to get to the Champions League group stage. But just after half-time, Bianchi put the away side up 1-0, against all odds. 2 minutes later, Dodô equalised with a great shot into the top corner: 1-1. After this, Roma really took the initiative and in the 50th minute, Pjanic put his team 2-1 up. The match was decided in Roma’s favour when the team took a 3-1 lead in the 81st minute: Albertazzi scored an own goal to give Roma a two-goal lead that they didn’t give away in the remainder of the match. Final score: 3-1 to Roma. More interesting was the final score at Napoli-AC Milan: 1-2 to the away team, this meant that Napoli were only 1 point above Roma.

The last match of the season for Roma was an away match against the relegated Avellino. Meanwhile at the Friuli, Udinese and Napoli met. If Roma won, and Napoli lost, Roma would finish second in the league. Roma’s dominance in the match was expressed in the 21st minute, when Pjanic opened the score with a simple tap-in. Roma didn’t extend their lead any further in the rest of the match, so the final score was 1-0 to Cañizares’ side. And because Napoli drew their match against Udinese, Roma finished the Serie A as runners up, thus not having to play any play-offs to get into the Champions League.

All in all, Cañizares has had a great debut season at his new club, finishing second in the league and going out in the semi-finals of the cup. Before the season people didn’t expect a lot from the season, with Roma expected to finish 7th. But due to several good runs, Roma have managed to finish 4 spots above their pre-season expectation. Also, Roma have been good in the cup, reaching the semi-finals.

Roma have also played great, entertaining football throughout the season with many goals. The team have put together some great passing moves, and Cañizares has made them play like a real top team, not like a mid-table team. He has certainly managed to turn around Roma’s destiny, with them going from a mid-table team with insecure finances to a title challenging team.

Player of the Month(s):
Italian central midfielder Andrea Bertolacci has been in good form, scoring a goal and giving an assist the last two games.

Serie A table:
Wow, a great season, considering last year! Good luck in the Champs League next season!
Great season mate, hopefully you overthrow Juve for top spot! :D
Great work to finish 2nd! Now knock Juve off that throne ;)

Shock around Olimpico as Cañizares joins Bayern

Santiago Cañizares – who led the club to a great second spot finish in the 2015/16 season – has joined Bundesliga champions Bayern München. The German outfit finished first last season under leadership of Italian manager Fabio Capello. They finished first with great dominance, creating a 26-point-gap with numbers two Borussia Dortmund.

Cañizares is seen as a manager who lets his team play attacking football, and he has received many plaudits with this attacking football. Now he has a chance to prove himself at a very big club, having to take over from Capello, who resigned after the end of last season. Before joining Roma during the 2014/15 season, Cañizares managed Valencia, where he got them second in his first season at the club. When he left for Roma, he was also in second.

In addition to winning the Bundesliga last season, the club also reached the final of the Champions League, where the team got knocked out by Mourinho’s Chelsea. The years before were less fruitful, as under fellow Spaniard Pep Guardiola the club managed to finish second twice, with Dortmund finishing above Bayern twice.

Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummeniggewas very pleased with the club’s new manager on his first press conference: “We at Bayern believe that Cañizares was the best choice, as he has already proven that he is a great manager in the past three seasons. He lets his team play great football, and that is exactly what we want to see here at Bayern. Although we’ve already got a great squad, we’ve decided to give the new manager a transfer budget of around 100 million Euros and a wage budget of 3.5 million.”

With the arrival of this new manager, quite a lot of changes are expected. Cañizares reportedly wants to switch to a three-at-the-back formation, and he wants some young talents to join his club. Also, he wants to get several old, unneeded players out of the squad. Examples of these old players are Schweinsteiger and Ribéry, who haven’t played a lot of matches lately, but they still cost the club a lot of wages.

The manager attended an interview with us after his official presentation.

“Hello Santiago, welcome to Germany!”

“Thank you, München is a great city!”

“What do you make of your squad at the moment?”

“I think that we’ve got a superb squad, and we don’t need many new faces. I feel we can challenge for every prize that we can possibly win this year.”

“What do you expect of this season?”

“Quite a lot, I think that we can win the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League with this great squad that we’ve got at the moment.”

“Have you already got plans for the transfer window?”

“Yes, I’m planning on bringing in some players, and I’m looking to sell some.”

“Thank you for answering these questions, we wish you the best of luck at Bayern!”

“I’ll do my very best to take Bayern to an even higher level, and I hope to have many great years here. Thanks for the kind words.”
Wow, that came out of nowhere, good luck at Bayern!
HOLY SH*T, 35M?
WOAH! Good work on getting the Bayern job mate! Good luck :D
