Stay with the team, we will turn it around - Cullis

October started off brilliantly. The team responded to a previous poor run of form by ruthlessly hitting Colchester on the break to leave The U's with an easy 4-1 win. This followed with a 2-0 win against Bury in the JSP Trophy - a competition which the team are ranked the favorites to win. However a humiliating defeat to Carlisle caused another downward step. Wolves haven't been able to put together a run of wins since August and yet again after what seemed like a change of fortune against Coventry the momentum couldn't carry through. Manager Stan Cullis gave his review below.

Stan Cullis:

I was foolish to think we turned the corner. The first two games of October was what I like to see. No tippy-tappy play. Quick, efficient passing, high intensity, pushing up the pitch and hitting the opponents with pace and tricks. The 0-4 defeat was a humbling experience. I hate losing. That hurt. Bouncing back is key. We failed. However I urge the supporters to keep faith. We are still a long way to go in the season and it's only a matter of time that we hit form. Our players are training well, they're striving for better. I can see a glint in some of their eyes that gives me confidence and gives me assurances that those players will buckle down and grind. Those who don't - a simple message - January is coming. You know what I mean.

EXCLUSIVE - Wolves boss on season so far

Stan Cullis's side currently sit 4th in Sky Bet League 1. Behind Rotherham in 2nd place by 2 points and more importantly behind top spot by 8. Why is this important? The club are expected by the majority of people - supporters, media and crucially in Cullis's position, the hierarchy of the club to win this division. We managed to secure an exclusive interview with Cullis about the season so far, the players and his strategy. We here are sure this piece will be revisited regarding the manager's position in May.

Stan Cullis:
Things haven’t been that well in terms of results. I’m confident we’ll step up in gears now the second half of the season is coming up. I just can’t help but feel my ambition of implementing an aggressive mentality among my players isn’t rubbing off well. And I’m not talking about the young guys. They’ve been fine. I’m talking about my so called “pros”. Jamie O’Hara has been on the booze again. I instructed my reserve manager to give him 60 minutes. He put in a 6.2 rating. Jamie will be let go in the summer. Carl Ikeme has been leaking in goals a lot and fills me with no confidence. I can’t believe Nigeria gave him his international debut. My only theory for this is some sort of Prince over there has got hold of his bank details. I believe the phrase is “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”. I will sort this out in January.

Results have been inconsistent. We’re yet to put up a convincing winning run. We’re hovering around the play off spot but that’s no good. We were 2-0 up and 3-2 up against Swindon and dropped 2 points. For me that shows incredible naivety. To throw away a two goal lead is criminal, to then regain the advantage and not win is suicide. Looking at the results it looks like our defending is poor. To an extent yes. Clean sheets have been scarce. However our finishing is just as bad. We create the chances but none of our midfielders have the conviction to go on. When I was a player at this grand team we prided ourselves on having ruthlessness in front of goal. There is an underlying problem going on where our players sit back too soon in games. This must stop.

We're in the final of the JSP so that's something to look forward too.

Your Manager,
Stan Cullis

Not a bad start to the season to be fair, and a good win over Everton in the League Cup. Hopefully you can string some wins together and push for the automatic promotion spots. Plenty of time left in the season. Good story, keep up the good work!

Wolves sign Federici

http://www.tiktaka.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Adam-Federici_2751621.jpeg

Adam Federici has completed his move to Wolves from Reading for a fee of £1m.

The Australian goalkeeper has found himself out of favour at the Royals this season and has stated that this move was vital to get his career back on track. The Wolves manager Stan Cullis has lauded the "great agility, reflexes and command" that Federici brings as the reason to making him the club's first signing of the season.
Think that is a good signing! How much do you have to spend with Wolves? Good story keep it up!

I'm ahead so I can safely say that was our budget used up ;) haha.

Much needed though.

Andy Reid joins on loan

Irish midfielder joins the club from Nottingham Forest on loan for the remainder of the season.

Stan Cullis:
I saw my group in midfield is unbalanced. We have 4 players who play out on the wings. We have Jack Price, Lee Evans, David Edwards, David Davis and Kevin McDonald in midfield. A young midfield who don’t have the nous of playing frequently at this level yet. For this reason I brought in Andy Reid on loan from Forest. He will provide the experience and composure on the ball which will spread to the rest. Unlike the others he can pull the strings in a deeper role allowing our more physically able runners to stretch the opposition getting on the end of his passes.

Inconsistency costing Wolves

Wolves would have been hoping to start the New Year with a positive run of form however continued inconsistency is widening the gap at the top for automatic places, and could potentially be the root cause if the club fail to secure promotion via the Play Offs. Manager Stan Cullis gave his review below.

Stan Cullis:
We got off to a fantastic start with a 3-0 win away to Tranmere. My players had to be rotated heavily during this festive period to avoid fatigue. More importantly Leon Clarke got himself back amongst the goals with a hattrick. Leon is a player who has great power and presence but his movements on the ball, and in between the lines is very reactionary. He doesn’t get himself in the goalscoring positions enough thus far but I need him to keep firing.

Unfortunately we couldn’t carry on with a good run (again). Gillingham comfortably beat us. Their played good football, exploiting our high line with neat play amongst their players. I notice that we have a problem from 45-55 minutes in terms of containing opposition pressure.

Preston at home was a mixed feeling. Top of the league at the time so in one way a point is fine, however I want to win my home games. Then again we got a clean sheet against tough opposition so we can show defensive resilience. It’s a shame we don’t carry on and our last results were very disappointing this month.

Your Manager,
Stan Cullis
Tough run there! Bet morale has taken a bit of hit after that. The result against Bristol City particularly stands out as not up to scratch, hope you can turn it round. Good story. Keep it up!

Johnstone's Paint Trophy North Final

First Leg

Scunthorpe 2-3 Wolves

Second Leg

Wolves 3-0 Scunthorpe

Wolves win 6-2 on aggregate and will play Peterborough in the Final at Wembley on 30th March.

Picking up form

Wolves have hit a rich vein of form this month. 5 victories out of 7 has seen the club strengthen their promotion push and also reach the Johnstone's Paints Trophy Final at Wembley against Peterborough. The team hit three goals in a game on four occasions which so far vindicates the decision not to bring in another striker despite many saying it was needed. Leon Clarke has in particular stepped up his game. The striker is in his second spell at the club and had previously admitted his performances have been underwhelming but a change of system has seen young Leon McAlinden join him in a two man strike force which has seemed to free up Clarke.

Crawley have done the double over the team and despite not doing well in the league they seem to have their number over us. Ending the month on a defeat was not a good feeling. Brentford hit Wolves on a number of counters and with the game looking to be a 0-0 draw the home side nicked it in the 88th minute. Manager Stan Cullis gave his review below.

Stan Cullis:
February much more successful month. A pretty hectic month but I’m happy with 4 out of 6 wins. Crawley at home we lost in the last 10 mins, Brentford were the better team and I have no complaints. What’s good is that we have gone away from home and scoring plenty of goals. 3 goals in 4 different games. Contented.

O'Hara and Ikeme have no future after pair missed training for an ENTIRE week

Midfielder Jamie O'Hara and goalkeeper Carl Ikeme have been told by Stan Cullis that both will have to look for new clubs for the new season. The pair have skipped an entire week of training having fallen out with the manager and out of favour at the club.

O'Hara has history for being more known for his extra-curricular activities rather than his performances on the pitch. The club have been trying to offload him but due to his high wages finding a suitor is very difficult. The player signed for the club while in the Premier League on wages near to 45k a week. He had been criticized by the manager for being too fond of a night out which has resulted in him only appearing on six occasions this season.

Ikeme began the campaign as the first choice goalkeeper but continued poor performances has resulted in the club bringing in Adam Federici in January. Cullis had expressed his bemusement of Ikeme receiving a Nigeria cap which angered the keeper.

Neither player were available to comment.

Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final

Wolves 0-2 Peterborough

Peterborough have won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy for 2013/2014 after beating Wolves 2-0 at Wembley.

A rather stale affair came to life in the last 15 minutes after 'Boro took the lead. Wolves had a lot of possession and in terms of combination play were the better team. However in hindsight it has to be described as a performance lacking intensity. The team in blue grew into the game and in the end got the first goal came off the back of a counter attack after Wolves had given the ball away near the half way line. The pace of the wingers were too much for the defence to regroup and midfielder Dominic Samuel nodded in the cross.

Another counter attack was the cause of the second goal after Wolves had gone overload to find an equaliser. Samuel again benefited, this time with a first time drive after a lay off in the box.
