Cullis: Happy with transfer business

The boss has confirmed that he is satisfied with the business the club did over the summer. While a section of supporters have been disappointing to see only two players join the manager has justified this by reassuring that the players are good enough to compete in this divison and has lauded the potential of our young players as a reason not to reinforce.

There were more outgoings late in the window. Kevin Doyle, Roger Johnson and Tongo Doumbia were all out on loan last season and were informed they were surplus to requirements at the club. The trio have qualities which justified them remaining in this division and the club would like to wish them the best.

Bjorn Sigurdarson has moved up to the Premier League with Watford. Again he was out on loan last season and leaves on good terms.

Kevin Foley has been a long serving player at the club but has been informed that at his age his chances of regular football is limited. Kevin asked to be allowed to leave and we could not stand in his way. The manager described his departure as a "shame" citing his valuable assets in different roles as something they'll miss.

Three players have been loaned out in the hope of regular, competitive football to aid their development.

2014/15 Pre-Season

Wolves fans got to see plenty of goals involving the club during this summer's pre-season. While not as spotless in terms of results, the level of opposition was greater as the club prepared to compete in the Sky Bet Championship.

Manager Stan Cullis gave his review below.

Stan Cullis:
We'll take away the positives from this set of fixtures. Our attacking quality. Our pace and intensity on the counter will get us the victories. When out forwards get on the outside they are opening the space and dragging defenders out of position. We have the advantage of having the attributes in our squad to use this to our advantage. I'm excited. I'm confident.

Slow Beginnings

Wolves began their campaign with a home victory against Millwall. The team went into half time at 1-1 but after a slow start to the second half, two goals in quick succession saw the visitors off. The same scoreline saw the side progress to the League Cup 2nd Round.

Brighton away was a televised affair which saw both sides claim a point each. The theme of losing a 1-0 lead continued in the two defeats against Wigan and Charlton. Fulham as expected knocked the club out of the League Cup with a crushing win but a win against Sheffield Wednesday put some smiles back on faces.

Manager Stan Cullis gave his review below.

Stan Cullis:
If we don't buck our defensive side out we are damaging ourselves. We will work on this. I've seen enough to suggest we can cause problems and put fear in defences ourselves. We need balance.

This is a really good story, you are really progressing well at the moment. A few losses in the league but is to be expected for a newly promoted side. I had a sneaky suspicion you will be staying up with an outside shot at a playoff spot.

Derby Win

Wolves are easing their way into the new season in the Championship and while results haven't been at the top level, the signs show they are not a team to be taken lightly. Attacks at pace have seen the goals come in, particularly from crosses however a cause for concern is the lack of clean sheets.

The 1-0 win against Aston Villa was a great day for all associated with the club. Villa have been relegated from the Premier League for the first time which culminated in a change of management. QPR who many felt underachieved last year by not going up with all their investments but Loic Remy having put them ahead then got injured and the match turned around after a first half battering by the Rs.

Two defeats and a draw make the month a bit flat however the season is still early and signs are the club are well equipped to compete in this league.

October 2014 - A Good Month

Wolves won 4 out of the 5 games played this month putting them in a strong position in the league. Amongst the top goal scoring clubs in the division the side put to the sword their opponents with an impressive away record. The 2-1 defeat to Burnley was the only blotch but all in all the club have settled in nicely to this campaign.

Following Wolves's 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers at the end of November a group of fans were invited to take part in a discussion forum with the manager and some directors. The event was held at Molineux and revealed some information regarding the running of the club and decision making behind closed doors. This will be the first of many entries informing supporters of the current state of the football club.
The topic which surrounds this segment is the sudden and surprising departure of winger Bakary Sako for no fee to Blackburn Rovers. The player notched up 18 assists and 6 goals last season and his pace and skill dazzled supporters at time with the manager acknowledging his achievements at the end of season dinner.

So why did he leave? Rumours were that he was involved in a training ground bust up with the manager after refusing to take up a specific training schedule designed to improve his role as a forward. When pressed about this the manager responded that "it is not uncommon for training ground disagreements" but ultimately "the player was frustrating to manage" but was more down to his eccentric wing-play.

The facts are as follows straight from the manager's mouth.

- Sako had one year remaining on his contract which was already on a hefty wage of 20k a week.

- When the time came to discuss renewal, "around March" the player's agent had no interest in talking.

- The player had been fined two weeks wages once and one weeks' wages twice for poor showings, resulting in a breakdown in relationship.

- When the player's agent accepted negotiation he demanded 44k a week. Cullis described this as "Premier League money for a Championship player".

- High wages and FFP was already a problem and many of the high earners departed (Doyle, Johnson)

- The decision was made to transfer him out but his wages put of clubs.

- Eventually the only offer was that no fee transfer from Blackburn who took his wages up to 36k a week. Described as "ridiculous"

What do we think?

Good riddance to bad rubbish.
