Wolverhamton Wanderers have appointed former captain Stan Cullis as their new manager. Cullis, a long serving player and fan favorite at the club has replaced Kenny Jackett.

Wolves have suffered the ignominy of back to back relegations and now sit in League 1. It's been a quick decline which has seen the club suffer both on the pitch and off it too.

Cullis is aware of the challenge ahead of him in what is his first senior management job. He told the press at his unveiling that "Wolves are the team in my heart and I am deeply unimpressed at our rapid downfall. I am determined and driven to get this club back up to the top level and with a period of stability and getting my plans into to place I will do so"

The Wolves directors weren't so forthright but nonetheless were delighted to see Cullis back at the club. His challenge in the short run is to get the club straight back to the Championship.

Stan Cullis's regime as manager has got off to a flying start. While pre-season is built up to be all about fitness and team bonding, the convincing results and goalscoring form gives everything to be optimistic about the upcoming season. The highlight of the friendly fixtures was that fantastic victory against Atletico Madrid in the new manager's first home game. Cullis has promised to bring back attacking football and high intensity football to the supporters. If pre-season was anything to go by the club are in for a good season.

At Wolves the expectation of the board, fans and myself is to get promoted. It’s my intention to get the automatic spots. I want League 1 to be a quick job. There is no reason why with the players we have we can’t achieve this. Friendlies went very well. Yes we didn’t play against great opposition until Atletico. But the ruthlessness and clinical edge is what I want to achieve.
Pressing high up the pitch to force opposition players into errors. For this reason my attacking players like Sako, Henry, Dicko, Ismail who have the pace and attributes to be a menacing force have to be rotated. I want my players to be fit and fresh. Wolverhampton Wanderers have rejected bids of £1.5m from Celtic and Derby County for the transfer of Richard Stearman. The player is said to be wanting the move with club sources revealing that the demands of higher level football could push Wolves into a corner where they cannot refuse the sale.

I know we were expected to win the league. The players I have are a talented group but in my system I need my players to be fit for purpose and in form. The young core of my squad is important and I could have bought some experience into the squad, but the challenge of playing and scrapping in this division will suit these younger players like Danny Baath, Jack Price, Liam McAlinden and others well.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have started their new campaign with five victories out of seven in August. The club are expected to contend right at the top of League 1 which is recognized by the manager. A positive start is always fantastic to build momentum into a new season. As pre season goes to show goalscoring is a strong aspect for the team. A superb victory against Everton in the League Cup still resonates strongly with Leon Clarke netting a hattrick. To beat a strong, top level club like the Toffees will definitely be one of the highlights of the season, even at this early stage. Manager Cullis gave his review of the month below.

Against Preston we played a team expected to go up along with us. It’s disappointing to lose the lead in the first half and by the 70th minute mark we were dead on our feet. We couldn’t handle Iain Hume’s strength. It was a tough day for our young backline but they’ll be better off for it.
Away against Bristol City was a good day. Again we played away to a challenger and we showed good intelligence on the counter to win this game. Bristol City have a good midfield, their 4-3-3 caused danger however it was important we got the ball and released it to our wingers. That’s where the goals came from.

Our home performances against Exeter in the Cup, Gillingham and Crawley were not to standards. We should never have gone to ET and I made sure my strikers and midfielders knew this. Goals all over the team is vital to winning. While the stats show a dominant performance, our play in the final third was poor. Crawley punished us for this and we have to take notice of this at the early part of the campaign. We'll move on.

Everton played a mixed team however they have strong ambitions to end their long trophy drought. Clarke responded with a hattrick and this was an incredible result given Everton have strong hopes for Champions League. Port Vale away to end the month was nice and comfortable.
