El Mago Appointed
Valencia has today announced that Argentine Alejandro Sabella will be the clubs new manager, replacing Nuno, who was sacked last week. The 60 year old said he was delighted to join a club like Valencia.
“I am very happy, I made a good decision. Joining a club like Valencia is any manager’s dream. I hope I can bring big success to the club and hope that all the fans like me, as the fans are very powerful at this club.”
Sabella, a retired midfielder, started his playing career with Argentine heavyweights River Plate in 1974, making over one hundred and seventeen appearances for the Los Millonarios, helping them to two league titles, one of which ended an eighteen year old drought, but had to play second-fiddle to River icon Norberto Alonso.
In 1978, Sabella moved to English side Sheffield United. However, he could not help the Blades avoid relegation to the then called Third Division. He made a total of seventy-six league appearances for the club, scoring eight goals, Sheffield United manager, Harry Haslam, agreed to sell the attacking midfielder to Sunderland, but Sabella refused to go. He then went on to score in the County Cup final against arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday, before being sold to Leeds United. However, his move to Leeds proved a wrong move by the Argentine, only lasting a season at the Yorkshire club, making twenty-three league appearances for the side.
Following his unsuccessful spell at Leeds, he decided to return to his native Argentina, signing for Estudiantes de La Plata. Under manager Carlos Bilardo, he helped the team to the Nacional semi-finals, before leading them to back-to-back league titles, and made one hundred and forty-seven appearances. He then moved to Brazilian side Grêmio on loan, making a total of ten league appearances, before leaving Estudiantes for Ferro Carril Oeste, where he stayed for a season. He then moved on to Mexican side Irapuato, before retiring
Sabella, also had a short but stweet international career with Argentina, collecting eight caps over a year, appearing in all of the games in the 1982 Copa America, and a few friendlies.
After retiring, he decided to go into management. He joined his former club River Plate in the capacity of assistant manager, where he stayed for five years. He then left to the Argentinian National Team, filling the same role for four years. Spells, yet again as an assistant manager, with Uruguay, Italian side Parma, Monterrey, Corinthians followed, before returning to River Plate. In 2009, he joined Estudiantes as manager, leading the team to the 2009 Copa Libertadores, their first in over thirty nine years. Sabella, known as the el Mago (“The Magician”), then resigned in 2011.
He had agreed to join UAE club Al-Jazira, but after Argentina’s poor showing the in the 2011 Copa América, which was hosted by the nation itself, he backed out of the move and joined the National Team. Argentina qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with relative ease, and therefore they were installed as one of the favourites for the title, alongside the hosts and Germany. La Albiceleste did not lose any of their group games at the tournament finals, playing against Bosnia, Nigeria and Iran. It took them to extra time to beat European opposition Switzerland in the Round of 16, and then beat Belgium to progress to the semi-finals, which they were drawn against the Netherlands. The game ended in a nil-nil draw, with Argentina booking their place in the final on penalties.
In the final, they played Germany, who had just beaten Brazil seven-one in their previous semi-final. Argentina held on until extra-time, before an Andre Schürrle cross found Mario Götze, who poked it past Sergio Romero to give Germany the World Cup.
Sabella then resigned and looked to return club management, and subsequently joined Valencia. Los Che owner Peter Lim told the clubs official website
“Alejandro is the perfect man to lead Valencia back to the top of Spanish football. He has plenty of experience, and I sincerely feel that he is the man to lead the club forward.”
Sabella will start work next week, when he will meet his staff and players, before turning his attention to the clubs pre-season in preparation for the long, hard campaign ahead.

In The Stands: Issue 1
Hello everyone, and welcome to the first ever issue of In The Stands, Your Number One Footy Magazine. We hope to provide an enjoyable magazine with plenty of football gossip for the foreseeable future. We will include gossip, exclusive interviews and other interesting information surrounding the world of football. We hope to provide regular insights into the sport we all love so much, and create a successful, and more importantly, create a magazine our readers love! Thanks for reading.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: ALEJANDRO SABELLA

Valencia of Spain’s La Liga recently appointed their new boss, Alejandro (Alex) Sabella, to take over from the sacked Nuno last week. After the announcement, we thought, what a great thing to put in the first issue, an exclusive interview with Sabella, and his first as the Valencia boss. So we got onto the phone to Valencia’s press officer and his agents to try and get one, and we managed to get one, so here it is!
Fernandez-Taylor: Hello Alejandro, nice to meet you! Thanks for coming.
Sabella: Hola! Nice to meet you too, and it is my pleasure.
Fernandez-Taylor: Let’s take a moment before we start talking about your new job, lets reminisce on your World Cup with Argentina, how did you rate the tournament as a whole?
Sabella: It was a very good tournament. We play very good football, and we came so close to getting our hands on the trophy, but it wasn’t to be.
Fernandez-Taylor: Who, in your opinion was your best player at the tournament for you, and then for the other teams?
Sabella: For Argentina, Leo Messi was great. He had a fantastic tournament, just like everyone of our players, but he stood out, he led the team. He won us our group. Overall, it had to be James Rodriguez. He surprised everyone with his performance, and scored fantastic goals.
Fernandez-Taylor: When you heard about Brazil being thrashed by Germany, what was your reaction?
Sabella: It is always nice to see your rivals lose, especially when it is Brazil, but I did feel sorry for them. To be beaten seven-one is not nice, especially on your home soil, in your World Cup, it is not nice [to see them lose like that].
Fernandez-Taylor: Now let’s move on to the present, why did you take the Los Che job?
Sabella: Valencia is a massive club in Spain, and in Europe. The city of Valencia is also great, and it was a job that was very tempting to come. I always have wanted to work in Spain and now I have finally have the chance to.
Fernandez-Taylor: What do you feel are the current objective for the club is?
Sabella: The current objective is to get the club back in Europe, and remove the images of last season from their minds. I want to let them know it won’t happen again while I am here. Valencia are a club that need to be going for the title, not mid-table, but this season, it is about healing the wounds.
Fernandez-Taylor: Who do you think are your best players at the club currently?
Sabella: From video’s I have watched, Sofiane Feghouli is a wonderful player. He will be very important for my team. Diego Alves is also very good too, and him playing well will be important to us. I also think, in the future, Paco Alcácer will be a good player for the club.
Fernandez-Taylor: The squad currently features a lot of players that have come in on loan, due to Valencia’s financial restrictions. Is this an approach you will have to carry on.
Sabella: If I am honest, I don’t like working with loan players. If we do well one season with a squad of loan players, it is hard to then build on that the next season as they have all gone. So, a lot of the players will go back to their clubs soon, with only ones that I feel will make a big impact staying. I will look to move for young talent or cheap stars until the financial state improves.
Fernandez-Taylor: Thanks a lot Alejandro, I appreciate your time, but that it is enough for now. Thanks again. Good luck at Valencia.
