September 2014 - FC Porto

After the mixed month we had in August, I am looking for the club to pick up some good results this time around and the goal is to not lose any games for September. I will be very pleased if we can do that. Lets have a look at how it planned out.

A terrific comeback and draw against a big club. Very happy.

Paulo Futre, 2-2 Draw with Juventus:
That was a terrific result, the squad showed some real fight being able to come back from two goals down against a team as good as Juventus showed that we have the ability to fight in the champions league. I am really looking forward to seeing more from the squad.

Terrific hat-trick for Vincent here as we dominated, Will Hughes also played very well and deserved the goal he scored.

A very convincing win from the boys, good to see Quintero and Quaresma on the score sheet. Hopefully we can continue these solid results.

Player of the Month

Ricardo Quaresma

Someone who has stepped up in a moment of need for the club and has shown that his creativity and unpredictability will be important for the rest of the season. Hopefully this form will show that the ageing winger still has it for another few seasons.

Manager's Thoughts

An undefeated month so nothing can be taken away from that. We also came back against Juventus in a thrilling Champions League game that has really made me feel confident about the season to come and our ability in big games. I have a good feeling about this season.
A unbeaten month there mate nice work, good draw against Juventus as well.
Walkinshaw - Would have liked some better results but can't complain

September was our first big test, after we received our UCL group of AS Monaco, Galatasaray and Manchester City. We would be playing the former 2 during the month, where I would need to be mindful of squad rotation. Ideally, I need at least a draw away to AS Monaco and a win over Galatasaray at home to have a chance of qualifying. Let's see how I did.

Player of the Month

Lisandro Lopez

Even though we had some disappointing games, we were always very solid defensively and much of it is down to the partnership of Luisao and Lisandro Lopez. The latter was probably better, especially after Luisao caused us to draw with Galatasaray, with Lopez becoming the in-form centre half of the Primeira Liga.

Slightly more disappointing month, especially after getting a tough UCL group. I guess we should start with the continental competition, the 2 games being amongst the most annoying of my career. AS Monaco downed us with a 93rd minute winner whilst we had to rescue a draw at home against Galatasaray thanks to a disgusting defensive error from Luisao. We dominated both games and walk away with 1 point. As for the league, the draw with Arouca was unacceptable even though we rotating ahead of the UCL game. Our remaining 3 wins were good though, and hopefully October sees us rise into that first position.
#BenficaOutofEurope it is going to happen
A decent month for Xander and a decent one for Feliks if only domestically but what does the table actually looks like points wise fellas?
Xander I hope Olympiakos squash you

walkin Points wise, Penafiel are running away from us, a game clear if I recall correctly. It's pretty tight afterwards.

Inches upon inches of editorial space have been taken up by the unfortunate exploits of SL Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan, and the 26 year old's season has gone from bad to worse. Today. physios confirmed Gaitan would be out of action for at least 3 months with a severe knee injury, and fans must wonder how he is coping with this trainwreck of a season.

Starting as a substitute in the Champions League game against AS Monaco, Gaitan was brought into the action at half time, looking to inject some flair into a dull game. But fate decided otherwise, and just 6 minutes after coming on, the Argentinian fell awkwardly from an aerial challenge and hyperextended his knee. Gaitan was stretchered off the ground immediately by medical staff and physios later determined the sideline spell - 3 to 4 months.

Gaitan lasted just 6 minutes into his return before leaving the ground

This could not have come at a worse time for the winger, who was on the road to reclaiming his spot in the first team. He is also under continued interest from Serie A club AS Roma, with some speculating he could be moved on in the January transfer window as Benfica look to secure funds to purchase River Plate's Eder Alvarez Balanta. To make matters worse, some pundits are saying Dorin Rotariu is making a mockery of Gaitan with his tender age and transfer fee; meanwhile Miralem Sulejmani dominated when given his chance on the left wing. Times are looking lean for Nicolas Gaitan.

Gaitan's return is expected to be somewhere beween mid-December and mid-January, which means it is hard to say how the remainder of his season will turn out. Will Rotariu have fallen out of form, allowing Gaitan to return to his first team role? Will he return from injury and find himself shown the door? Whatever the answer, Gaitan can only hope he has already used up a season's worth of bad luck, because otherwise 2014/15 can be truly written off.
I feel like I've been missing out on this story! The setup is impeccable, great teamwork :)
in other news, what a disaster of a season for Gaitian :(
