Oxford United duo credit Duberry for turnaround wins

Oxford United defenders Jake Wright and Luke O'Neill have praised their new manager Michael Duberry after a perfect month.

In September, The U's twice came back from a goal down at the half time break to earn wins against both Southend United and Exeter City. United captain Wright and on-loan Burnley defender Luke O'Neill have given credit to the Enfield-born manager for turning the games around and being able to achieve a perfect record last month.

Duberry's team picked up a maximum fifteen points over five league games played last month and also beat Cheltenham to earn a place in the 2nd Round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Despite a shaky start to the season, Oxford's results have really began to pick up now and this was recognized when Duberry won the League 2 Manager of the Month award in September.

The former Chelsea and Oxford player has utilized his loan signings like Kemar Roofe from West Bromwich Albion, who picked up the League 2 Player of the Month award in September after scoring three goals in five games for his club.

Luke O'Neill is another of the loan signings made by Duberry, and the 23-year-old Burnley right back has featured in all of the league games played by Oxford so far this season, with some impressive performances to go with his ever-present record. O'Neill and Wright have both spoken to Sky Sports about the recent performances of the team.

[Jake Wright:] "It's clear to anyone to see that there's been a huge change in our performances in the last month when you compare it with the start we made to our season. We've started to really understand and get to grips with Michael's style of play and he has to be credited for our recent form. Obviously myself, Luke and the rest of the squad have also done well but in my opinion, if we'd been trailing at half time at the start of the season or with Gary Waddock towards the end of last season, we wouldn't have found the motivation to turn it around."

[Luke O'Neill:] "Yeah, I agree 100% with Jake. It's a really impressive feat to be able to come into a club with no previous managerial experience and be able to lead your team to five wins out of five in only your second month. Those two games we turned around in September, all of the lads on the pitch weren't feeling up to it when we came in for the half time break, but Mike gave us a really motivating talk and we came back out and snatched the wins on both occasions. I think that just demonstrates the character of him."
two quality updates, and other than the northampton game a really solid month. The 4-4 game looked thrilling ;)

Oxford's Duberry hopeful of Kemar Roofe stay

Oxford fans have taken an instant liking to loan signing Roofe and Michael Duberry says he will try his hardest to keep the West Bromwich Albion striker at the club after his loan expires at the end of the season.

Oxford United boss Michael Duberry has praised loan star Kemar Roofe and has announced his intentions to sign the 21-year-old striker on a permanent deal in the summer.

Roofe has been on fire for Oxford this season and has been recognized as the Player of the Month in September and the Young Player of the Month in October.

The English youngster, who is also eligible to play for the Jamaican national side scored a hat-trick in his last outing, with his side drawing 4-4 away to Carlisle United.

Duberry has also impressed critics, winning two consecutive Manager of the Month awards with his U's side sitting in 2nd place in the League 2 table.

"Kemar is an absolutely fantastic player. I do plan to bring him back here next season in some form, but I hope that it can be a permanent switch from the Midlands.

Kemar is really enjoying life here at Oxford and the fans absolutely adore him. He's been playing well up front for us as a lone striker since the arrival of Jake Hesketh last month, and he's still got his so much potential to fulfill. I hope he can recognize that we're a suitable option to help him with his development."

Fellow U's striker and Roofe's occasional strike partner Pat Hoban also had some good things to say about the Walsall-born man, who can play in a variety of other positions.

"Kemar is a great guy. He brings so much energy to the squad and he's so reliable as a player. If I'm to be here next season, which I really hope I will be, I'd really like to play alongside Kemar again."

However Roofe, whose contract at The Hawthorns expires in the summer, is not prepared to confirm his interest in swapping a Premier League club for the Kassam Stadium.

"It's a possibility. I've spoken to Michael about the chances of it happening over the last few weeks, but at the moment, I do still have a contract at West Brom and I feel like I owe them a lot. All I will say at this time is that moving to Oxford next season would only be a possibility if the coach back at the Baggies allows it. I won't be requesting transfers or anything silly like that.

But the fans here have shown me a lot of love in my short time here and I'm determined to do my best to repay their support in me and the rest of the lads."
The Roofe is on fire!!

Zeli Ismail: Oxford United sign Wolves winger on loan

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Zeli Ismail has signed for League Two side Oxford United on a three-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old Englishman has played five times for Wolves so far this season in the Sky Bet Championship but manager Kenny Jackett is confident that the Albanian-born youngster will develop better with regular match experience.

"We think the future is bright here at Molineux for Zeli. He's a very talented kid, and we're confident that he'll impress us and the Oxford fans out on loan over there."

Ismail previously played in League 2 on loan at Burton Albion last season, making fifteen appearances for the side.

Former Burton Albion winger Alex McDonald is expected to be sidelined at The Kassam Stadium following Ismail's arrival, and the Wolves man is expected to make his debut for The U's in their F.A. Cup tie against non-league Corby Town later this month.

Cryptic tweet gets Oxford fans excited

A tweet from Oxford United's official twitter account has sent users of the social networking site into a frenzy. A 'hashtag' has been started by Twitter users which references the image used in the tweet by The U's.

'#HalaOxford' has been trending on Twitter this morning after the club posted a picture of a Real Madrid player with a distorted face, with the short caption 'Soon.' accompanying the photograph.

The image has caused many users to speculate on who the player in question might be, with the only two clues being that the player joined footballing giants Madrid in 2004, the season in which the shirt worn by the player in the photo was used by the team.

Madrid only made four signings in the 2004/2005 season and finished 2nd in La Liga. Michael Owen, Jonathan Woodgate, Walter Samuel and Thomas Gravesen were all signed up by Los Blancos.

Which of those mentioned is the player in the photo? And will they be coming to League 2 Oxford United as a player or staff member? We'd love to hear your thoughts below.

More to follow.
Judging by the hair in the picture, it's not Gravesen :P
Nice results! Looks like it's Becks.. That month was great, as you conceded only in one match, albeit 4 and kept the cleansheets on the others.

Oxford United announce Woodgate signing

Sky Bet League 2 side Oxford United have announced the signing of former Real Madrid, Tottenham and Middlesbrough centre back Jonathan Woodgate.

The in-form team tweeted a picture of a former Real Madrid player with his face distorted yesterday with the caption 'Soon.' going with it. Today they have revealed that the player in the photograph was Jonathan Woodgate.

Woodgate has been very unfortunate in his playing career to date, being hit with numerous injuries at various clubs to halt his development. He began his senior career at Leeds United and played for the Northern club several times in the then UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League but he was hit by injuries from this early point in his career.

Regardless, he moved to Newcastle for £9 million in 2003 and quickly became a fan favourite but another serious injury ruled him out.

Real Madrid shocked the footballing world the next season when they announced their capture of Woodgate from St James' Park for just over £13 million. He did not establish himself in the first team until 2006, but still only went on to make nine league appearances for the Spanish giants.

Since being sold by Real Madrid to home-town Middlesbrough, he has played for Stoke City, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently had another spell at The Riverside until they released him in October.

Oxford boss Michael Duberry pounced on the free agent and although talks with the eight time England international initially stalled, the two parties eventually agreed on an £850 per week contract which will see Woodgate remain at The Kassam Stadium until 2016.

Duberry, who has won two consecutive Manager of the Month award, has revealed the difficulties he had negotiating with Woodgate's agent.

"We knew it wouldn't be easy to attract Jonathan here. We haven't got bundles of money to throw around so I had to try to keep the wages offered to him on the low side. To be fair the requests of his agent were reasonable but I still felt the club would benefit from a slight reduction. Neil Reed wanted the best for his player though, and so the talks broke down at first.

But Jon had words with Neil and told him that he had to find another club soon and we eventually came to a settlement. Jonathan will also take up a position as coach at the club as he's told me that's something he wants to do when he retires so I suggested that he starts now."

Woodgate is expected to make his debut for Oxford next week in the final game of November when they take on 24th place Cheltenham Town.

Woo Woodgate! Great signing, I expect big shirt sales from the fans ;) this story is getting better and better
