Long standing Melbourne City captain Patrick Kisnorbo has stood down after 3 years in the role, citing playing time issues as the reason behind his decision. Kisnorbo was arguably City's most dependable defender last season; however the emergence of Connor Chapman and the signing of Matthew Spiranovic have forced the 34 year old to resign from his captaincy.
"I'm under no illusions that Connor and Matthew will be the preferred choice of centre backs this season, and due to this fact I have resigned from my captaincy. I feel that I will not be on the pitch sufficiently to do my job well."
Although vice captain Erik Paartalu was expected to step up to the captaincy, Harry Kewell has sprung a surprise by naming Player Of The Season Jason Hoffman as the new skipper. Hoffman experienced a breakthrough season last year and Kewell is adamant 'The Hoff', as he is known around the club, can step up to a leadership role.
"From everything I've seen of him he is the perfect leader. Determined, vocal, and leads by example. I think Jason will do a great job as the new captain."
Meanwhile, Erik Paartalu will retain his vice captaincy whilst Kewell has announced a brand new 'leadership team', comprising of Hoffman, Paartalu and new deputy vice captains Jackson Irvine, Matthew Spiranovic and Josh Kennedy. The quintet will handle all on-field matters for the club, says Kewell, and also fill-in for Hoffman and Paartalu should injuries be a problem.
The club's new leaders will get their first run through in the season opener on Saturday.
