Everton will need to beat Manchester United for the second time this season if they are to advance in the Capital One Cup after drawing them at Old Trafford in round 3.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has lauded his sides 'fantastic start' to the 2015/16 season and has urged the players to keep the run of form going.
Martinez was speaking after his sides 1-0 victory over Sunderland in front of a capacity crowd at Goodison Park. The home side went ahead after 78 minutes through skipper Phil Jagielka after dominating the game throughout and could and probably should have won by a more comfortable margin.
Speaking in a post match interview, Roberto Martinez expressed his delight at the manner of the victory.
"It has been a fantastic start to the season, despite the draw with Crystal Palace" said Martinez.
"Not only the victory itself, but the manner of the victory, I thought we were completely superior out there today, in all areas of the pitch. Our midfield was fantastic, we created chances but we didn't put them away. That's something to improve on but I'm really glad that we managed to get a goal and pick up the three points.
"It was important for the team that we started well and made sure that we kept Sunderland on the back foot, and I couldn't have asked more from the team, it was a complete performance. We now need to keep this run of form going and keep this level of performance up. A few more goals would be nice but I'd take 1-0 every week over scoring 2 or 3 and losing."
Everton have been dealt a blow with the news that Republic of Ireland international midfielder James McCarthy is facing up to 5 weeks on the sidelines with a strained muscle in his calf.
The 24-year-old was taking part in a routine training exercise when he went down clutching his calf and scans have now revealed the extent of the damage.
Early indications suggest McCarthy could miss Everton's next five games including the visits of Arsenal and Southampton to Goodison Park. McCarthy will also miss the latter stages of Ireland's Euro 2016 qualification campaign which sees Ireland take on Poland and Scotland.
The news comes a major blow to Everton boss Roberto Martinez, who sees McCarthy as one of the first names on his teamsheet.
"It's a big blow for us because he has been a first team, regular for us since he joined from Wigan. He has been one of our best players," said Martinez. "I'm not going to put any targets on his return. He will be back when he's back, but we have lost him for the foreseeable future. I have every faith that Mo (Besic) and Gareth (Barry) can step up and fill the void in his absence."
Really enjoying this story, as an Everton fan myself. Like the unique element as if you are a reporter and I'm really liking it. Keep up the good work!

England international Ross Barkley was the hero for Everton, scoring a 90th winner, to help the Merseysiders beat Arsenal by 3 goals to 2 at Goodison Park.
