Ferguson declares Everton interest

Former Everton captain and current first team coach Duncan Ferguson has revealed that he would snap at the chance to manager Everton should he be asked.

Ferguson is already working at Everton having joined initially as a youth coach in 2011. The 43-year-old former Scotland international spent two and a half years working with the club's under-18s. In February 2014, Ferguson was promoted to a first team coaching role after impressing boss Roberto Martinez with his management of the youngsters.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Ferguson revealed that he'd love the chance to manage Everton.

"I'm not going to lie, I'd love the chance to manage Everton. I absolutely love the club and its fans and that's why I'm here now. I've really enjoyed my time coaching under Roberto Martinez and I feel I'm ready to take the step up. The step up would also be made easier considering the fact that I know the players and have been working with them for a while now."

"At the end of the day though, it's up to the chairman Bill Kenwright. I've made my interest known to him so the ball is in his court. He knows me well and knows what I am capable of as a coach, it's just whether he thinks I can make the step up. Even if he doesn't choose me as the new manager, I'll be continuing my work here at Everton and I'll support whoever the new manager is. I have no plans to leave Everton."

Hughes not interested in Everton role

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has ended speculation linking him to the vacant Everton job by releasing a statement denying he wants the job and that he's happy at the Brittania Stadium.

Former Manchester United and Everton player Hughes, 52, is the latest manager to be linked with the vacant managerial job at Everton. So far, the likes of Roy Keane, Lee Clark and David Moyes have been linked with the job, with former players Dave Watson and Duncan Ferguson expressing interest in taking over at Goodison Park. Bill Kenwright has refused to comment on the speculation.

Mark Hughes moved quickly to put a halt to speculation linking him to the Everton job in an interview with Jim White live on Sky Sports News.

"I am very happy here at Stoke and I'm focused on my work here. At the moment I'm pushing to get us into the top six of the Premier League and I don't plan on leaving until I've achieved that. Of course being linked with Everton is very flattering and I have only good things to say about the club but I'm not interested in managing them right now. I look forward to shaking the hand of their new manager when they play us."

Everton Football club is today delighted to confirm the appointment of former captain and first team coach, Duncan Ferguson, as its next permanent manager.

The 43 year old former striker has been at the club in a coaching capacity since 2011. Prior to joining as a coach, Ferguson had two spells as a player, either side of a spell at Newcastle. During that time, he played 272 times and scored 72 goals, becoming a cult hero at Goodison Park.

Ferguson was officially unveiled as the club's 15th permanent manager at a media conference on Monday afternoon.

Announcing his new manager to the amassed media, Chairman Bill Kenwright said: "I am delighted to announce that Duncan Ferguson is the new manager of Everton Football Club. Duncan knows this football club inside out and is worshiped by the fans here. As soon as he registered his interest in taking on the role, I knew he was the man for the job."

"During his five years as a coach, Duncan has done nothing but impressive me with his knowledge of the game and level of maturity and for that reason, he is perfect for the role as manager. He has already worked with the first team before and this will really give him a head start in his new management role. I have every faith that Duncan will be a success and I hope the fans back him."

New manager Ferguson added: "Everyone knows what this club and the supporters mean to me and to get the chance to manage such a great club is a dream come true. Being an Evertonian means it's a very proud moment for me. I am really looking forward to my new role and I can't wait to work alongside the players and the backroom staff to get us into the top 4."

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett has revealed how his side are out to cause an upset when they play Everton in the Capital One Cup quarter finals tomorrow night.

So far this season, Wolves have been this year's surprise package in the Capital One cup with noone predicting that the Championship club would make the quarter finals. In the 3rd round, Adam Le Fondre scored in a 1-0 away at Everton's arch rivals Liverpool and Jackett wants a repeat of that result.

"There is absolutely no reason why we can't go out there and beat Everton. We've already turned heads with a number of our results this season and we aim to do the same against Everton. Obviously they will be affected by the change of manager that they've gone through but whether that has a positive or negative impact remains to be seen."

To reach this stage of the competition, Everton have recorded wins over Bolton, Manchester United and Stoke whilst Wolves have beaten Scunthorpe, Liverpool and Cardiff.

Ferguson calls for derby day response

Last Updated: 15th December 2015

Everton manager Duncan Ferguson has called for a response from his players against Liverpool after seeing them lose their unbeaten streak away at Tottenham.

In an open game at White Hart Lane, a late goal from England international Harry Kane inflicted a first defeat of the season on Everton, who have surprised many with the rise to the top of the table. Speaking to Sky Sports News ahead of wednesday night's Merseyside Derby with Liverpool, Ferguson revealed that he's looking for his team to bounce back in the game against their local rivals.

"It was disappointing to lose against Tottenham. I felt that we could have done more in front of goal and possibly won the game but that's just the way it goes sometimes. It's imperative that we sign a striker in January because Romelu Lukaku needs some of the pressure of his shoulders. Don't get me wrong, Rom has been excellent, but if we were to lose him I think we'd struggle."

"Our aim is to bounce back with a win over Liverpool on Wednesday night and if we play like we can, we will do it. The players know what to expect and they know that they're in for a fight. Playing in a Merseyside derby is something else, it's the best football fixture in the world and we know about the expectations of our fans. We want to give them something to shout about."

Baines: "It's good to be back"

Everton left back Leighton Baines has revealed his delight at being back in the first team fold after his free kick helped secure a 3-1 derby day victory over Liverpool.

"I'm really glad to be back in the side. There is nothing worse than watching from the stands when you're injured. All you want to do is get out there on the pitch. Luckily, the lads have been performing really well and they haven't missed me too much. The aim now is to stay injury free and have a long run in the side"

Baines downplayed his free kick skills when questioned and instead focused on the 3 points gained from the Liverpool win.

"I do practice them in training. I was just lucky really as I managed to get a good connection on it and it went in. I'm more focused on the fact that we got the result more than anything else to be honest. It was important that we bounced back after the defeat to Tottenham and I'm proud of the performance we put in."

Manager Duncan Ferguson also had special praise for the England international left back.

"I'm not surprised at all. Leighton always stays behind after training to practice free kicks and penalties and has one hell of a left foot. He is a model professional and I'd definitely use him as an example to all young footballers on how to train and behave on and off the field. If England don;t take him to Euro 2016 then some serious questions need to be asked."
