Our defensive record has been very solid but the new signings have been a little less than impressive personally but if it aint broke dont fix it!

Champions of Italy, Juventus, will host Paolo Vanoli’s Parma in the First Round of the Coppa Italia next week.

Next week, on the 13th December, the Coppa Italia really kicks into action as the giants of the Italian game join the competition, with Juventus, Internazionale and AC Milan all joining the competition. For Italian Champions Juventus, who have won the last three TIM Cup titles, they will face a visit from rivals Parma, led by manager Paolo Vanoli. The tie has special significance as it marks the first time Parma have met the Champions since they were relegated to Serie D after extremely poor financial problems at the end of the 2014/2015 season. For Paolo Vanoli, the game presents an opportunity for Parma to knock the current holders out of the competition, especially after Parma eliminated Serie A side Bologna in the final qualifying round a few weeks ago. After finding out that his side were drawn against the current holders of the competition, Vanoli spoke briefly to the media about the tie.

Reporter: ”Paolo, the Coppa Italia has thrown you up a massive game against your rivals Juventus. How does this make you feel? Are you excited or worried about how your team will fare?”
Paolo Vanoli: ”Yeah I can’t wait. It’s going to be a really good game and a really interesting one. Obviously they are the Champions of Italy and the current holders of this competition but we’ve proved ourselves to be a good team and one that is capable of beating Serie A sides.”

Reporter: ”Massimiliano Allegri’s team is one full of world class talent like Paul Pogba, Sami Khedira and Paolo Dybala, and promising youngsters like Domenico Berardi. Do you think your side is capable of dealing with players of this talent?”
Vanoli: ”Yes, more than definitely. Against Bologna in the last round we were playing against players that are probably that little bit better than ours and the lads were terrific. They defender as a unit and then when it came to going forward they did really well and we were really quite eye catching to watch going forward. Against Juventus, we need to make sure that we play with that same kind of defensive stubbornness and if it all comes together we can give causing an upset a really good go.”

Reporter: ”This is the first game against a club of this stature since the club was relegated to Serie D, does it signal the start of a new era for Parma?”
Vanoli: ”Yes, I’d like to think so. We’ve been dying to play teams like this since I took over at the club and hopefully this will be the first of many. We’re doing really well in Serie B at the moment and if we can perhaps keep building on that, then we could well be playing teams of Juventus’ standard and reputation next year.”

The Parma manager would later go on to talk about his teams performances in Serie B this year, in which his side could push for promotion to Serie A. However Vanoli gave the sense that he was confident that his Parma side could surprise Juventus and eliminate the Italian Champions from the competition with the right kind of performance. When asked again if he thought this could happen, Vanoli just laughed and stated ”Yes, if everyone does our jobs!”

Competing against Juventus is always a huge honour, and I'm certain your players will treat the game with respect, but won't hold back against what is arguably Italy's biggest club!

We have to be careful not to give them too much respect otherwise with the quality of their squad they could run riot against us!

COPPA ITALIA FIRST ROUND REVIEW: JUVENTUS VS. PARMA

Italian Champions Juventus moved easily into the Quarter Finals of the Coppa Italia with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Serie B side Parma at the Juventus Stadium. With both sides topping their respective leagues, it was billed as a game to watch, especially after Parma overcame Serie A side Bologna on penalties in the final qualifying round. However what could only have been described as a major upset was never likely as Juventus dominated from start to finish and the Old Lady, who have won the last three Coppa Italia titles, cruised through the game, only allowing their opponents to have one shot the entire game. For Parma fans though this game was seen as a test of how far their team had come since their relegation to Serie D at the end of the 2014/2015 season and under Paolo Vanoli, Parma fans can only surely be happy that they are finally playing Juventus again, rather than worrying too much about the manner of the defeat.

After a stubborn defensive performance had formed the basis on which Parma edged their way past Bologna in the final qualifying round, Paolo Vanoli set his team up to defend deep and hope to hit Parma on the counter. However their reluctance to press higher up the pitch and try and catch Juventus out, was Parma’s downfall and in the 37th minute, the Old Lady had their first real prolonged period of dominance as Paolo Dybala forced a good save out of Raffaele Di Gennaro and Martin Caseres earnt a series of corner for Juventus in which Raffaele Di Gennaro did well to handle and show how good a goalkeeper he could be for Paolo Vanoli’s side.

Juventus’ dominance and sheer ability finally shone through in the 39th minute though as Claudio Marchisio stopped a Parma breakaway, forcing the ball into the penalty area, and unfortunately for Parma, Simone Sini gave away a free kick before Carl Medjani fouled Paolo Dybala in the area, with the resulting spot kick powered into the back of the net to find Domenico Berardi.

Juventus’ dominance continued in the second half as Daniele Rugani launched a counter attack with the ball finding Claudio Marchisio. The veteran Italian midfielder found Martin Caseres out wide before the Uruguayan looked for Paolo Dybala who headed wide. The second goal was imminent though and in the 57th minute Yves Baraye had a rare effort for Parma, with his free kick being collected by Geronimo Rulli, who launched the ball up field to find Martin Caseres high in the Parma half, who crossed in to find Domenico Berardi waiting in the area, with the young Italian forward volleying home to make it 2-0. Parma, managed to stem the flow of the game in the final half hour, until in the 82nd minute Norbert Gyomber fouled Paolo Dybala in the area, with Domenico Berardi stepping up again to slot the spot kick home to make it 3-0 and complete his hat trick.

It was a dominant display from Juventus, however Parma fans can be happy that their side held relatively strong, despite the stats not supporting their happiness. For Paolo Vanoli it will no doubt fill him with confidence that perhaps, with a few new faces, Parma could cause a few upsets in Serie A if they achieved their aims for the current season.
