Former Austria Wien U21's player Mathias Sommer is the new Marseille manager.
Sommer was born in Vienna on the 28th of January 1988 into a middle class family. He found his love for football at the age of 13, rising through the ranks he got scouted by Austria Wien and signed for them a short time later. But Sommer could never break into the first team. So when the opportunity to manage the U21's arose he couldn't turn it down. He managed them for a season, in this time of gaining experience he finished the season in a respectable 6th position in the Regionalliga Ost 3 levels down from the first team. But with the first team in a good position he realised there wouldn't be an option for him to manage them so he left Vienna to look for something different. Mathias Sommer received offers from all over the globe but he was waiting for the right one. He came across Ligue 1 with Paris Saint Germain dominating it would be Monaco and Lyon battling it out for second, a route into the Champions League group stage. Lyon won this battle finishing second just 31 points behind PSG who had wrapped up the title in March with a 9-0 win against struggling Troyes. This would be PSG's 4th Ligue 1 title in a row.
Sommer then looked down the table to find that Marseille had finished in 13th position and they had been fighting relegation earlier in the season. José Miguel González Martín del Campo, more commonly known as Míchel, was the manager of Marseille in a caretaker capacity . The clubs hierarchy were looking for someone who could take them up the table and bring European football back to the Stade Vélodrome .
This was the job Mathias had been searching for.
