Tranmere manager Micky Mellon spoke of his disappointment after seeing his Tranmere team go out of the FA Cup at the hands of League One Southend.
The home side went into the game with hopes of another upset after beating Coventry in the last round and took the lead in the 15th minute through Lois Maynard. Southend hit back with three goals, two from Sam McQueen and one from Will Atkinson. Although James Norwood pulled one back, Tranmere fell to their first defeat of the 2016/17 season.
"I'd be telling lies if I said I wasn't disappointed," said Mellon after the defeat. "However I cannot fault the effort of the lads out there today. We always knew that it would be a difficult task to beat a team from a higher league and I thought the lads put in a strong performance."
"Unfortunately it wasn't enough for us to get a result and that's disappointing. This is the first time that we have tasted defeat this season and that in itself is a fine achievement. Now we need to push on and focus on the National League and regaining our rightful place in the football league."

Tranmere will travel to fellow National League side Guiseley in the FA Trophy second round.
The two sides have already played each other this season, in August at Prenton Park. On that day Jack Fitzwater, Ben Tollitt and Louis Almond found the net in a 3-0 Tranmere win, in a game where Micky Mellon fielded a weakened side.
