Liam Knowles: Hopeful Stagnation

It has taken little time for new Eastleigh gaffer Liam Knowles to dig into his reportedly profuse transfer budget at Silverlake, finalising the signings of six new pros at the club.

With an estimated transfer budget of £55,000 handed by Stewart Donald, it is apparent that a chunk of that money has gone into wage budget investment as well as signing on fees, with the club paying no transfer fees for the new arrivals.

A question in Knowles’ first press conference was about his aims for the transfer window this summer, to which he was quite cagey about. However, just 21 days into his new job and he has got six players to sign the dotted line.

The first to join Knowles’ list of playing staff was young striker Jake Pickard. The 19-year-old made his way into the professional game by coming through the academy at Scottish outfit Queen of the South. He made his senior debut aged 17 years old and eventually played 31 league games for his former team, scoring no goals due to a positional change which left Pickard playing on the wing a lot of the time.

Another youthful addition to the Eastleigh squad is 19-year-old Devarn Green. The youngster can play up-front as well as out wide on either side thanks to his immense pace in his locker, which earned many plaudits in the Burton and Blackburn youth management. Green was released by Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season, ending his spell there with no professional appearances for the Championship side.

Liam Knowles could potentially be giving away a tactical secret by his choice to sign a pair of wingers in Devarn Green and Calaum Jahraldo-Martin. The natural left-winger is a 16-time senior international for his native Antigua and Barbuda in the Caribbean, scoring 3 goals for his national side. Aged 23, Jahraldo-Martin has slightly more professional experience, playing senior matches for the likes of Boreham Wood, Dulwich Hamlet, Tranmere, Alloa, Hull City and more recently, Leyton Orient.

The signing of Tom Rosenthal is widely claimed to be Eastleigh Director of Football, Richard Hill’s only input in transfer business this summer. Rosenthal played in an English trialists match earlier in preseason and impressed the onlooking Hill, who fed this knowledge to Knowles. The attacking midfielder spent a year at Belgian giants Zulte Waregem in 2014, making four first-team appearances for Essevee before a move back to England to join Queens Park Rangers last season.

The signing of Jerry Yates on loan is much seen to be a cover for Jake Pickard and James Constable until the injured Darius Henderson and Craig McAllister are fit for selection. Reports say that Yates must fight for his spot on his loan spell despite two successful loan spells at Harrogate Town in recent seasons gone by.

Luca De La Torre is another potential indicator for what type of formation Knowles is looking to implement at Eastleigh this season, with the arrival of two new attacking midfielders if it includes Tom Rosenthal. The American 18-year-old has not been able to break into the first-team at Craven Cottage and this is his first loan spell to make a name for himself involved in first-team football. He joins until the end of the season.

The transfer window has not seen any Eastleigh players leave the club as of yet.

In the backroom staff department of the club, Liam Knowles has added a Scout and a Physiotherapist to his team behind the scenes in Ernie Tippett and James Barker respectively. Tippett served Southampton as a Scout previously and Barker has held roles at Millwall, Gillingham and Crawley before Knowles signed him up.
What an update. Some of these players are interesting, heard of a few due to them playing against Accy or just through FM so I look forward to what impact they make.
Amazing graphics there Jack
I'm with MJK here, the graphics are really cool and this story has made a very strong start!
Scott: Aye, some good lads there - just hope they pull through for me!

MJK: Thanks mate :)

mgriffin: Thanks mate! Really appreciated :D

This set of fixtures heading into the new season - my first season as a football manager - was incredibly important to regain some squad fitness as well as build a team around some new additions which I felt very confident in. No players have left the club as of yet, and so far I don't plan to let anyone go voluntarily as I am willing to give the current squad a chance until January.

In terms of results, we began well at our only home game of preseason against Championship promotion favourites Brighton & Hove Albion, scoring three goals in a tight 4-3 defeat to Jaap Stam's side. An unfortunate loss to Kidderminster was a blip in what was an anomaly in our good performances against Weymouth and Gosport.

The National League starting grid puts us in 9th place due to the alphabetical structure of the league. The signings that I have made at the club have bolstered our chances according to bookies up to even winning the title, ahead of the likes of Tranmere Rovers and Forest Green Rovers. To go up automatically we need to finish first, otherwise we need to finish in the Play-Offs which go from 2nd to 5th place.

My new signing has really hit it from the off in this preseason with a two goal return from three appearances. Green was the decisive factor in both the Weymouth and Gosport victories, scoring the winning goals. Devarn's pace will definitely benefit him in some of the National League's less agile defences.

Holy crap how long did it take you on the graphics especially the table?

The initial design took a while, but from now onwards it will be a lot quicker since I have the templates ready now :)

Eastleigh chairman Stewart Donald has released the official number of season ticket sales the club have sold this summer.

The hiring of the unknown manager Liam Knowles has seemed to pass the loyal supporters of The Spitfires by as sales rocket to 1,300 cards sold - the club's highest amount of season ticket sales in their history.

"We are delighted by the amount of fans coming to Silverlake Stadium this season with their new season tickets," Stewart Donald commented. "Knowles and the team will be working very hard to reward the loyalty our fans have shown this season by bringing great success to the club."

It is argued that Eastleigh are in one of the best positions in the club's history. The Spitfires are widely regarded as one of the favourites to win the title this season due to the strength of Liam Knowles' squad going into the new season.

Eastleigh supporter spokesperson Nicholas Dunn has also commented on the soaring season ticket sales, "This is set to be one of our greatest seasons, taking into account the signings we've made. Liam Knowles is a risky appointment, but as fans we are willing to go forward with him in charge."

With the average season ticket price costing the fan £220, it is estimated that Eastleigh have made well over the £250,000 mark on season ticket sales - a figure that will help Liam Knowles achieve his goals this season through player signings.

Eastleigh will play their first Vanarama National League fixture on 6th August when Guiseley travel south for the opener against Silverlake Stadium.
That is a pretty damn good price for a ticket. Can I get one?
Your graphics make me very very jealous...
MJK: Silverlake can fit one more in ;)

Scott: You know how to charm me ;)

So here we are, at the end of my first month in professional football management in a competitive competition. The month started very well against Guiseley in our first match of the season, with new signings Pickard, Rosenthal and Green all getting on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win at Silverlake Stadium. A few unlucky draws and losses see us further down the table than I had initially hoped, but a good start nevertheless.

Unexpectedly, it is Wrexham who have come out of the stalls unbelievably well, rampaging through all seven games with wins - including a victory against my team in the process. Wrexham see themselves five points ahead of 2nd with these results. We find ourselves in 9th place, in a good position to get into the Play-Offs, but also very early on to slip into bad form and slide down the table.

An extremely promising start by all of the new signings, however Tom Rosenthal has impressed me the most this month. The attacking-midfielder, signed by Richard Hill, has played striker throughout all of this month and has reaped the rewards, scoring five goals in seven matches.

Some decent matches there man. It is still early so don't worry yet about the losses

23rd September 2016

Is there anything not to love about Friday evenings? Especially in autumn when you have the log fire on full blast and you’re watching the people walk past with their big jackets on because it’s freezing out. All meanwhile you are all cosied up in a blanket watching Prison Break on Netflix.

I was renting a small semi-detached house about 10 minutes drive away from the Eastleigh training ground. It was most definitely expensive, but worth it if everything worked out. Besides, it was a lovely place in a lovely area, never much trouble and next to no traffic – even during rush hour due to the lack of local schools.

A big, black BMW rolled up which caught the very edge of my eyesight, causing me to look across. It was parking almost right outside my front garden. Three men got out of the car; all dressed in hoodies and cargo pants. They began to walk down my driveway where my car was parked; they took a look at it before carrying on walking towards my front door. “You sure this is the one?” I heard one of them ask.

There was three knocks on the door. Aggressive knocks, that is. I headed over to see what they wanted.

“Mr. Knowles?” The one who knocked on my door questioned. “May we come in? We need to chat.” I let them walk all over me, heading straight into my kitchen.

“Do you remember taking a picture with a man called Derrick maybe a few weeks ago?” Another one asked me as he rested his forearms on my marble desktop.

“Sorry,” I started. “Why are you in my house? Didn’t quite catch your intention as you intruded in here.”

The three men looked across each other. “Mr. Knowles – I hope that you’re aware of a potentially career-destroying image that we are in possession of, and through our contacts in the press they will certainly be lapping this story up.” One of them said.

“Young new manager moves down south, within a month he’s best friends with one of England’s most notorious drug kingpins? That’s a front-pager, that one is. We are just here to negotiate.” Said the second one, approaching me slowly, getting his phone out to show me the image. “The man you took a photo with in Southampton was Derrick Laker. Convicted on two counts of assault, one count of money laundering and now spearheading one of England’s largest drug operations. An image with a guy like that is simply asking for trouble.”

I stood back, astounded. “What?”

“We’re going to cut to the chase. We understand you don’t earn a lot from working in non-league. We know you got a beautiful property to be paying for. Petrol, food, drink, leisure. All that. What we want is 20% of your weekly earnings at Eastleigh Football Club. Otherwise this picture is on the front page of every national and local newspaper we can get a hold of,” said the tallest one, dangling the image of me and Derrick Laker in front of my face, using it as a Royal Flush to win the mind games with me.

“Your choice, Knowles. Make it smart.”
