Kuyt Strike Wins Feyenoord Johann Cruijff Schaal
Feyenoord secured their second piece of silverware in 2016, as Dirk Kuyt’s thumping effort in the 76th minute of the Johann Cruijff Schaal match versus League Champions PSV Eindhoven, was enough to secure the trophy for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men. Feyenoord dominated the tie from start to finish but it wasn’t until the introduction of the club captain in the second half that the KNVB Beker winners were able to hit the back of the net and take the advantage in a tie that they fully deserved to win.
Feyenoord had been knocking on the PSV door for the entire match as van Bronckhorst’s 4-2-3-1 formation gave Feyenoord the tactical edge over Philippe Cocu’s side. However it wasn’t until late in the second half when Bilal Basickiglu was switched to the right wing and Nicolai Jorgensen placed on the left with Dirk Kuyt up front on his own that Feyenoord started to really push for the win. It was the Turkish winger that managed to set up the winning goal with a mazy run down the wing before drilling the ball to the edge of the area to find skipper Kuyt whose thumping effort flew past Jeroen Zoet in the PSV goal to give Feyenoord a richly deserved 1-0. The only dampener on the night was that less than 5 minutes after scoring the winning goal Dirk Kuyt was stretchered off after damaging his hip, an injury that means he will miss the next 2 months of the season.
Speaking to the press after the game Giovanni van Bronckhorst said he was delighted to have secured the win against a very good PSV side, and also added
”we were saddened to see Dirk being stretchered off like that as I’m sure the 51,000 people inside the stadium tonight were. He is a great character and a great man and it is sad that he will miss a part of the season that big but tonight he is a hero too after scoring the goal that wins us another trophy in our quest for success.”
