Feyenoord Make It Two Wins From Two In Group G
On Matchday 2 of the UEFA Europa League Group Stage, Feyenoord made it two wins from two, although their victory wasn’t without it’s difficulties as they bounced back from an early goal to seal a 3-2 win over Belarussian side BATE. It came on a night when 11 goals flew in over the 2 games in Group G, as Astra Giurgiu and Shakhtar Donetsk shared a 3-3 draw in Romania, to ensure that Feyenoord moved two points clear at the top of the 4 team group.
Vitaliy Rodionov gave the visitors the lead at de Kuip after just 13 minutes as BATE managed to get in behind the Feyenoord defence with the forward sweeping the ball home to give the visitors a surprising lead after Feyenoord had peppered their goal with chances in the opening exchanges. However the lead lasted just six minutes as Tonny Vilhena levelled from outside the penalty area in the 19th minute before just 6 minutes later central defender Eric Botteghin headed home from close range to put the Dutch side in control of the tie. Vilhena added his second of the game ten minutes after the break with another powerful effort, this time just inside the area. BATE rarely threatened in the second half as Feyenoord saw the game out but the home side will be disappointed to have conceded a second goal through Yan Ivchenko with minutes left on the clock, although this was to be the final action of the game as it ended 3-2 at de Kuip.
Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst spoke to the Dutch media after the game, praising his sides spirit and ability to come from behind.
”We were stunned to go behind to be quite honest, we were the better team throughout the course of the game so we were left feeling a little shell shocked when they took the lead. Fortunately the boys have got good heads on them and they managed to pull us back into the tie and go on and win the game which means we’re in a very good position moving forward in the Europa League.”
