Peimari Smash SJK To Secure Suomen Cup Glory

Peimari United Were 4-1 Victors Against SJK In The Suomen Cup Final At HakkisPaana

22/05/2021

Peimari United ended their Suomen Cup final losing streak in style as they smashed SJK 4-1 at HakkisPaana to claim the trophy for the first time in the club's history. The hosts opened the scoring early on before SJK equalised in stoppage time of the first half. Three goals scored in the final twenty minutes did not flatter Peimari United, however, who were beyond exceptional in the final. The cup victory secured UEFA Europa League qualification football for Peimari United for the 2022/2023 season.

Both sides were met by the roar of the crowd as they made their way onto the pitch for kickoff. Despite only 400 people attending the tiny stadium, the noise levels were equivalent to that of a stadium ten times, or even a hundred times, it's size. Banners and flags were on display as the Peimari faithful cheered on their team. Having felt cup final heartbreak in each of the last two seasons, the Paimion Leijonat were determined to right past wrongs.

The home fans had to wait until the thirty-eighth minute for the first goal of the game, however, but the goal was worth the wait. From a throw-in deep in SJK's half, teenage midfielder Jarno Seppälä tricked his way past two SJK defenders before teeing up his midfield partner Sasha Popovitch. The fan favourite lashed a first-time left-footed effort which nestled in the far corner of the goal, and sent the home fans in to raptures of cheers and applause.

The visitors were not without their attacking threat either, and tied the game up in stoppage time of the first half. Matti Klinga was afforded too much space outside the box and the midfielder sent a glorious right-footed drive into the top corner of the goal. It was a goal which deflated the mood in the stadium somewhat, but half-time allowed the home fans to regain their voice for the second half.

The second half saw Peimari United test the fitness of their opposition. SJK's players began to weaken considerably, and the home side began to dominate the game inside the opposition's half. With twenty minutes to go, Peimari United had regained the lead. Felipe Aspegren lead a fast-moving attack down the left. He chipped a pass to Bruno Rodrigues on the other side of the pitch, and the Portuguese wing back cut the ball back into the path of the onrushing Sasha Popovitch, who had the freedom of the entire goal to tap in his, and Peimari United's, second goal of the game.

Sasha Popovitch Was The Star Of The Show As He Scored Twice From Midfield

Peimari's second goal had broken the visitors, and the hosts soon found a third of their own. SJK attempted to mount a meaningful attack, but Felipe Aspegren cut out the attack before releasing Antti Pokela with an adventurous long-range pass. The ball bounced unkindly for Pokela who had to shield off two defenders. The striker then picked out Justus Kauppinen, who was free inside the box, and Kauppinen took his chance well with a composed low finish.

Peimari United wrapped the game up in stoppage time with a fourth goal. Kauppinen turned provider and Pokela turned scorer as the former sent a cross in for the latter to head in at the near post. It was a goal which completely killed SJK and confirmed Suomen Cup glory for Peimari United. It was the first time the club had won the trophy, and it came after a very strong performance in the final.

Peimari United Scored Three Late Goals To Demolish A Tired SJK Side

Kalle Koskinen:
"It is a fantastic moment for this football club. This was the one trophy that evaded us in each of the last two seasons and we finally got our hands on it! It was a fantastic win for the football club, especially in front of our fans at our own stadium, and the club will cherish this moment for years to come. It is the first time of many Suomen Cup wins, I hope!

It was a tough game for the first seventy minutes. Everybody knows of the attacking talent at SJK's disposal, and their goal was an incredible individual moment. We had to fight for every first ball and every second ball, and then sometimes every third ball, because of how relentless they are in their fight on the pitch. They showed just how tough they are and I think we can be proud of how we restricted them for most of the game.

The last twenty minutes were fantastic. We were missing a lot of players because of the U20s World Cup, with five of our players at that, but it didn't show in our performance. The boys who played showed passion, heart, desire, and great dedication to our game plan. They fought for each other and it made it easier at the end. When we saw SJK beginning to tire, we knew that we had a chance to seize the game and we did that very well. Three brilliant team goals, I don't think I can ask for more.

I think we'll enjoy this success tonight. The players deserve to celebrate their success. There won't be any mad partying, a lot of the squad isn't even old enough to drink yet anyway! We play our next 'final' against FC Inter Turku on Thursday in the Veikkausliiga. Every game is important and we need to show the same mentality and intensity in every game. We only have Veikkausliiga football for the rest of the season, so we need to make sure we play every game like it is a cup final."

Next Update: #82 - Season 2021: May
FINALLY, a major domestic trophy win after so many attempts. A great, emphatic win over what is a strong SJK team including the likes of Billy Ions, Tolonen and Hetemaj! Interesting to see that after such a great moment in the club's history that Koskinen is allowing no room for outlandish celebrations.
1
A nice win, a trophy, and the UEFA Europa league qualification to top it off! Keep it up Kalle!
1
I told you I'd catch up ;) What a journey it has been so far! Sensational story writing mate. I really love your way of storytelling. Also, you "finally" won a final, with the Europa League qualification spot topping it. Looking forward to all the updates from now on! :D
1
Get in! An excellent final twenty minutes guides Koskinen to a thoroughly deserved Suomen Cup. Glad to see Billy Ions was kept quiet - he's one name I'm familiar with, so that must say a fair bit about his quality. :P

Season 2021: May

An Overview Of Peimari United In May 2021

Kalle Koskinen:
"After an incredibly bright start to the season, we were looking to cement our place among the front runners of the league title. May also brought with it the culmination of the Suomen Cup and we were desperate to get our hands on that particular trophy, with a pathway to UEFA Europa League qualifying football a prize for winning it."

Transfers

Peimari United Signed Promising Brazilian Youngster Cleiton Vieira

Players In
There was just one signing in May as Brazilian teenager Cleiton Vieira was signed on a free transfer, on his eighteenth birthday. Vieira played 25 times in all competitions for Luverdense EC last year, scoring once. He left the club in search of a pathway to European football, and found that at Peimari United. Young, quick and a good finisher, Vieira was highly rated. He went straight into the club's youth side, with a view to loaning him out when a suitable offer comes in.

Peimari United Lifted The Suomen Cup Title In A Strong Month In May

Veikkausliiga
Our first league game of the month was a rather disappointing affair away to SJK. Santanen scored a penalty with less than ten minutes on the clock to give us what looked to be a decisive win. However, Maximio Tolonen found the back of the net two minutes later to earn SJK a share of the spoils. We followed this up with another draw, albeit a more exciting one. In a game full of twists and turns, we drew 4-4 away to HIFK, with them scoring the last goal within the final fifteen minutes.

Our form dipped further with a defeat away to VPS. We went ahead twice, but they equalised after both goals. VPS then scored a late winner to break our hearts and see us leave Vaasa without a single point. We recovered to finish the month strong with a 4-1 win over FC Inter Turku. We scored twice in stoppage time to make the game look like an even more emphatic win than the performances suggested.

Suomen Cup
RoPS were first up as we played out a tense quarter final. The game went to extra time with the scores level, and we ran riot as our fitness proved to be much better than theirs. We marched through the semi final with a comfortable win over Kakkonen side JäPS. SJK awaited us in the final. After seventy minutes of a very even display, we capitalised on their lesser fitness levels and scored three times to emphatically win the Suomen Cup, earning UEFA Europa League qualifiers football in 2022 in the process.

Player of the Month

Jarno Seppälä Was Peimari United's Star Player During May 2021

Jarno Seppälä was our hero in May. It was a very mixed month of results and performances and I wouldn't have ordinarily picked Seppälä for his performances, but he handled a tough month well and performed well in the cup final too. He scored twice in our 4-4 draw with HIFK, his highlight of the month.

Veikkausliiga

Peimari United Remained On Top Of The League Despite Slump In Form

Despite a very disgusting run of form in the league, we were still top of the league. We led the way on goal difference and had a game in hand to boast. We knew that the competitiveness of the league could benefit us, if we put down a good run of form. However, we needed to start consistently winning games again.

Upcoming Fixtures

Peimari United Were To Play Just Four Games In June

We had a bit of a break before our next Veikkausliiga fixture, due to an international break. This would allow our players to rest, recover and refocus ahead of a tough remainder to the season. FC Lahti, KuPS and RoPS were all expected to be tough opposition, but it was the away trip to HJK which stood out. They were the giants and they were the team we wanted to beat. After humiliating them in the first Veikkausliiga game of the season, they were sure to want revenge. We wanted to make a statement. It was set to be another thriller.

Comment Section

Jack, we'll have plenty of time to celebrate the cup win once the season is over! We've still got plenty to play for in the league and it would be a mistake to take our foot off the pedal now, even for a split-second.
BigMaguire, Europa League qualification is massive for the football club. It signals the progress made since Kalle's early days, and will surely see a heap of cash reeled in.
Jim, good to see you all caught up ;)
ScottT, Ions & Tolonen have proven to be two of the most lethal attackers in the Veikkausliiga in recent seasons. The pair of them have been a thorn in our side for some time. I'm sure Kalle would like to sign them at some stage, though ;)

Previous Update: #81 - Peimari Smash SJK To Secure Suomen Cup Glory
Next Update: #83 - Season 2021: June
Pretty mixed month regarding results. Glad to see you are still on top of the league and with a game in hand. Looking forward to the trip away to HJK. Gonna be a great match I hope! ;)
1
Congrats on the Suomen Cup win and staying top of the league.
1
It seems the Suomen Cup run may have had a knock-on effect in the league. I'm surprised to see you still leading the way, it has to be said. The timing of the goals seem to suggest that your players switch off in the latter stages of games, with quite a few goals being shipped in the final fifteen - twenty minutes of games. That's definitely something to be worked on from my point of view. Next month presents the perfect opportunity to record three points, albeit away from home, Lahti aren't pulling up any trees. KuPS will be a tricky encounter, as will HJK - despite them recording an abnormally poor start to the season. Veiria looks an exciting prospect; my only grievance is his lack of determination which could let him down. I look forward to being proved wrong, though!

Season 2021: June

An Overview Of Peimari United In June 2021

Kalle Koskinen:
"May saw us lift our first trophy of the season. We humiliated SJK in the Suomen Cup final to add to our trophy cabinet and to secure European football for next season. We now had to turn our full focus to the Veikkausliiga and fight among the other big teams for Finland's next prize. We knew the other teams had depth, quality and experience on their side, but we had team spirit and heart."

Results

Peimari United Had Four Very Mixed Results Throughout June

June was the month of bottling games late on for Peimari United. First up was a trip to FC Lahti. Leading by a single goal in stoppage time, we concede. Points dropped. The win against KuPS offered some respite and a confidence boost ahead of a monumental game away to HJK. What a game that was! We went ahead. They equalised and then went ahead. We equalised and then went ahead. They equalised. We went ahead once more, before they scored an equaliser very late on to break our hearts. RoPS gave us further late heartbreak as we surrounded the game to a stoppage time goal, which saw us face defeat for the first time in the month. It was a month that hurt. No player of the month for us, I was disgusted by the squad's profound ability to concede goals late on, throwing away points needlessly in the process.

Veikkausliiga

Peimari United's Poor Form Saw Them Drop To Fifth

We deserved our drop in position. Thankfully, we were still in touching distance of top spot, and we had a game in hand. HJK were also underperforming but we knew they would soon recover. We needed to recover too, or we could kiss our title hopes goodbye.

Upcoming Fixtures

Peimari United Were To Play Nine Games In A Busy July

What a month ahead of us! We had nine games to play in July, with a large part of the Veikkausliiga to be completed during the hottest summer month. It provided us with the perfect opportunity to regain our form. We had a big clash against HJK at the end of the month, but they may be moved depending on their European fixtures. We were hoping to be back on top of the league by the end of July. (I know I put the wrong badge for HIFK in the middle. Sue me.)

Comment Section

Jim, it wasn't the best month in the league, but we've had worse times. Onwards and upwards!
SonOfAnarchy, thank you!
ScottT, it did indeed, the results dipped a little bit after the final. I think us conceding late goals comes down to a lack of experience. The squad is very young and still learning. It'll improve with time and training.

Previous Update: #82 - Season 2021: May
Next Update: #84 - The Dance Of The Dragon
It's always painful conceding late on. League is now pretty tight with 6th being just 2 points off 1st. Let's hope you can pick up your form in July!
1
I think you're right in putting the number of late goals down to experience. I think it could also be a case of lacking the stamina and concentration late on which comes with it, usually. It's a testing time for Koskinen at the moment, but I have the confidence he can turn this round. Peimari are still massively overachieving, at the end of the day, anyway!
1
With your great start taken into account, not the greatest month and that is demonstrated with the league position. July is a hectic month for Finnish teams and there are a lot of decisive points on offer there, go get 'em.
1
July is going to be an incredibly busy month playing almost 50% of your games to that point in the one month. Good start to the league but the form is slowly dropping. Just hope you don't slip up!
