Going into the DFB-Pokal Second Round fixture, 1860 Munich had not defeated RB Leipzig in five past meetings since their return to the Bundesliga. A record that Robin Hack appeared determine to correct when he opened the scoring within the first ten minutes of the match after being played through by Kasper Dolberg and converting a tough chance. RB Leipzig would go on to produce more chances for the rest of the half but fail to find the back of the net.
Immediately after the start of the second half, Robin Hack and Kasper Dolberg would connect again, this time with Dolberg getting on the end of a cross from Hack to increase the lead. Despite being behind, RB Leipzig would not rest, continuing to attack and apply pressure which resulted in 1860 Munich midfielder Lothar Piller receiving a second yellow card multiple fouls in the 69th minute.
The pressure increased and 1860 Munich would eventually break early into injury time when Abdulkadir Omar scored in the first minute of injury time to leave Die Löwen with a tricky five minutes to negotiate which they did so successfully to seal the upset victory.
“I am thrilled that we have been able to upset RB Leipzig but there is still a long way to go in the competition.” said Robin Hack. “I am sure they will be looking to return the favour when we play them again in the Bundesliga in three days time.” he added.
In other matches, Schalke 04 also provided another shock result, defeating Bayern Munich to eliminate them from the competition. In the next round, 1860 Munich have drawn recently promoted Bundesliga side Hamburger SV with the match to be played at the start of February while their next match
