Continuing to impress here. A shame about that final result of the month, however, next month provides an opportunity to close the gap on the current leaders!

Finances Limit 1860 Munich Progression

Michael Scharold battles financial limitations every day as 1860 Munich managing director

• Despite their struggles, the club is currently financially secure
• 1860 Munich have already sold two talented youngsters to help finances
• There is only currently 27 players on professional contracts at 1860 Munich

Heading into the January transfer window, many clubs across Europe have begun to bolster their roster by bringing in new players on transfer or loan but for some a harsh reality sees their club stall in their progression duto to financial limitations. 1860 Munich who have gotten off to a wonderful start in Bundesliga 2 after being promoted from the 3. Liga the previous season, but currently have no funds to even secure a player on loan to help continue their ascension.

When asked about the situation, 1860 Munich managing director Michael Scharold said “I would love nothing more than to give Daniel (Bierofka) the funds to help him in his push for promotion but it is just not feasible at this time.”

The situation the club faces is that their success on the field has far exceeded its ability to grow off the field while attempting to keep up with the other clubs in its division. “To solve this issue, we do not want to resort to an internal cost-cutting exercise as the individuals off the pitch are just as important as the individuals on it.” he added. “Our staff all are excellent at what they do but are also doing much more work than staff at other clubs as many have to complete two or three roles to see us continue operation.”

1860 Munich will resume the Bundesliga 2 season when they take on SpVgg Greuther Furth on the 26th of January at Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer.

ScottT, Justice & TheLFCFan: The St. Pauli result hurt a lot, they are a club I really like but I can’t stand losing to a team twice

MJK46 & Jack: I just can’t seem to pick up the draws instead of a loss this season but we are in a great position.
You know what compared to what happened to 1860 a few years back I would say this isn't too much of a big deal. Just keep winning and soon it will be worth it with the struggles.

The financial side of things is becoming more and more important within modern football. Having an inferior budget, especially a playing budget, can make competing appear to be an impossible task. As a Stanley fan, I know all about that... and about defying the odds ;)

It's a growing thing in football - particularly following the introduction of FFP ironically - that lower league clubs are getting hit harder on the financial side of things. The big clubs always seem to get an advantage as Scott makes the point of Accrington Stanley in the above comment. This considered, it's been a tremendous season in the light of media expectations being low as well as the added difficulty of these finances.
A shame that you are unable to compete with the ‘big boys’ of the nation in terms of finances. However, last seasons results as well as the start of this season has shown that with some hard work you can compete with anyone! Keep up the good work and the money will follow!

Results

To start the new year, 1860 Munich gave up a two-goal lead to draw their first match of the season against SpVgg Greuther Furth. It is expected the match will be one that fans look back upon as a pivotal moment in the season with star player Osei Owusu as well as Timo Gebhart in his 100th game for 1860 Munich both getting injured during the match.

Die Löwen found themselves on the back foot early in their other match in January against 1. FC Nurnburg when Stefan Lex was sent off in the 44th minute. Despite being one man down, it was Lex’s replacement Johann Ngounou Djayo who broke the deadlock to win the game in the 81st minute with a stunning strike.

2. Bundesliga

The battle at the top of the table continues in Bundesliga 2 with four points separating the top five positions, while the likes of FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV all have quality squads and remain in striking distance.

SV Darmstadt fans would be the most disappointed this season with the club expected to finish in the top half of the competition but find themselves as likely relegation candidates alongside 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

Player Of The Month

Robin Hack

After scoring a brace in the match against SpVgg Greuther Furth and performing well against 1. FC Nurnburg, the 22-year-old German has been named player of the month for January.

Arriving at the club at the start of the season, Hack has begun to play to his potential in recent months with 1860 Munich manager Daniel Bierofka hoping his play continues to improve throughout the rest of the season.

Comments

MJK46: This is certainly a preferred situation to what 1860 Munich have faced in the past

ScottT, Jack & TheLFCFan: Despite the financial difficulties, it certainly has been a great season so far
Congrats nice job on not losing to any Bavarian club this month

Those two points dropped against Furth could be pivotal come the end of the season. Hopefully it's not a result the team come to rue at the end of the season. Thankfully the injuries sustained are only minor, but the absence of both Owusu and Gebhart will certainly be felt with some immensely important games on the horizon.

MJK46: Well, really I didn't lose to any clubs in January haha

ScottT: The SpVgg Greuther Furth result was very frustrating to watch, I am glad it wasn't a point in the season which saw a complete change in form
I like that we have Union and 1860 on the verge of promotion. Werder was a tough one but still scoring 2 will help on that goal difference if needed as the table is sooo tight
1
Is there a club policy of only dropping points once in a month? ;)
1
A much easier month coming up now, after impressing greatly in a tough February. A good run like that to end the season could see you winning that title!
1
You seem to be outscoring teams more often than not. If you can tighten up at the back, you'll certainly find yourself within the top two at the end of the season. It's an incredibly tight league... far too close.
