Dundee United used to be one of the "giants" of Scottish football, they've played in Europe, used to challenge Celtic and Rangers for titles and even narrowly lost to Manchester United 5-4 on aggregate in a European competition.

Since I won't be working for a while, I thought I'd try and work on getting Dundee United to their rightful place.

My main aim will be to topple Celtic. It will be no mean feat, Dundee United currently languish in the Scottish Championship, however they do have a very good squad, far better than for the Championship.

I have currently finished my first season, and would like to highlight my progress

[img][/img]

We started off in the Betfred cup and as you can see we did terribly, the squad just weren't gelling and I realised that I might need to make an extra signing to give us an extra push.

So I signed this guy from Arsenal on loan and he changed our season.

[img][/img]

As you can see 24 goals in 37 games is an incredible return and he was able to help us all across that front line.

But now to move onto the other competitions.

We did incredibly well in the Scottish Cup, reaching the semi finals, and going to a Morelos inspired Rangers. I must admit I played a bit too open in the game and it will be something to learn from going forward...

[img][/img]

One trophy in a cabinet, and a lot of goals in their as well which is good to see. So this means we have one more competition to look at and that is the league, did we get promoted, or didn't we?

[img][/img]

Top by 15 points - a fantastic season all in all. We were top from day 1 and just led all the way from there. Balogun and Shankland were unbelievable and it would be nice to keep them both for the upcoming season in the Premier League.

[img][/img]

Aaron Doran was a January signing from Inverness and I realised we were short on quality on the left hand side. Glass was unbelievable in supplying our strikers, McMullan was good on the right hand side, but going forward I think we will need a couple more options up front as well as a few additions at the back, but I'm confident we can find a few gems.

I will be continuing this story for a long while and I am just wondering would people prefer updates which are month by month or end of season updates?

All the best and thank you for reading.
Welcome to the site. Congratulations on promotion and success in the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Cup. Shankland is a goalscorer of the highest calibre. He will be crucial next season. It will be great if you could bring back Balogun too.

Thank you very much for the welcome, I look forward to posting more on the site.

By the looks of things I'm keeping hold of Shankland, Rangers were interested at the end of the season but that interest disappeared thankfully.
Unfortunately, we weren't given a lot of money for our promotion so I had to be creative with my signings - thankfully it's ended up being some of the best signings I've ever made with a side.

I needed to bolster my defence as my original back line consisted of a 33 year old and a 29 year old who were below 3 star rated. These two that I got on loan are obviously much better. Branescu will challenge for the number 1 spot and Molina will bolster my midfield, however it is my next two signings who are the best.

[img][/img]

When I saw Dembele available for loan, I had to try for him but I never thought he would come. Hibs put in an offer and Celtic weren't happy with me only offering 90% of his wages initially, but he actually chose to come to Dundee Utd over Hibs which was a big boost.

[img][/img]

YES !!!

Balogun made a great choice and opted to return on loan for another season in the premier league, he will be mainly used on the wide-left or up front again, either way he's high quality and these signings should be enough for us to push for mid-table at least.
This is an interesting story, Royman. Dundee Utd do have some good players and are provisional Scottish Championship Champions IRL. I really liked the wrap up at the end of the season showing your matches in the competitions but didn't really get to know any of the players or your strategy before being introduced to the results, which made it more challenging to know who are your "good" and "bad" players. If you want to stick with the end-of-competition reveal (again, I liked it) then maybe have a start of season like you are doing showing ins and outs and strategy and at the end a more in depth write up of each competition so we know who the star was in the William Hill Cup (for example).

I like seeing people manage in Scotland and hope you do well in our save.

Thank you, I will bear that in mind in future. To be honest I think I'm going to do a monthly update, I'll show my tactics plus who have been my best players through the month and perhaps one or two have disappointed me.
That's what most people do and it is a good way to go.
It's been a bit of a mixed bag so far, but that is to be expected as we are a newly promoted side.

[img][/img]

We've pretty much smashed the Betfred Cup this year around, even whilst resting a couple of players. All our players have been firing on all cylinders in that competition, scoring for fun, even reaching the quarter final. To be honest we should beat Arbroath, which means we could reach the semi-final of yet another competition.

However the league is our bread and butter and we want to get off to a good start.

[img][/img]

Unfortunately it's been a bit meh - we got off to a good start beating St Mirren, but playing Celtic as early as we did was not good for our confidence or to build up a good run of form. We should have done better against Hibernians, and had numerous chances to equalize, but both Balogun and Shankland squandered a lot. They both need to get on form in the league. Kilmarnock was a hard though game. I brought on a substitute, McMullan to change the game, but he got himself sent off 2 minutes after coming on which meant we had to hold on for 30 minutes for a much needed point.

Hopefully we can pick up 6 points from Linvingston and Dundee in our next two games before the big one against Rangers.

[img][/img]

That is where we are in the league, not perfect, we just need a good run behind us to secure us hopefully in the top half, otherwise we are in for a dicey relegation battle.

[img][/img]

My personal stars of the season so far are Simpson and Harwood-Bellis who have done reasonably well in cup and league, unlike Glass, Balogun, Shankland and Dembele who have only been on form in the Betfred Cup, fingers crossed they can transfer that form into the league.

By the way this is my tactic if anyone is interested.

Month 2 in the top division was a big improvement including a significant win.

We started off with a 3-0 victory over Livingston, it seems a comfortable win, but we scored our first goal through a reserve striker in the 76th minute, they just went all out for it and we just pummelled them on the couter-attack. Still, it's good to be amongst the goals again.

The reserve happened against Dundee which was gutting, we dominated the first half, they scored in the 44th minute, and we just kept getting hit in the 2nd half and succumbed to a 3-0 defeat.

Abroath was a comfortable win, we were 2-0 up by half-time through goals from Jamie Robson and Lawrence Shankland. I changed things around for the second half ahead of our game against Rangers, but we came out comfortable 3-1 winners.

[img][/img]

As you can see, we rode our luck a bit with Branescu being our man of the match - he also saved the penalty, it weren't missed as such. Glass managed to hit them on the break late on, and arguably, he has been by far our best player going forward this season. Shankland and Balogun have not hit the same heights as last year, but there is still much of the season to go.

Player of the month has got to our match winner against Rangers, Declan Glass.

[img][/img]

We find ourselves 6th in the league, which is a good start.

[img][/img]

We also have a Betfred semi cup final against Rangers to "look forward" to.
I like it, Royman! Well done on your progress! Good luck in the semis against Gers--maybe you'll get lucky again.

I've noticed your formation crowds the pitch right behind your striker with Balogun and Dembele both cutting in. Do you find that they are fighting with Glass for space or do they play more 1-2 to open space? Looks like Molina also comes up to get some action so you have many options for attacking.
Ahh tough loss in the derby against Dundee, but at least there's a memorable victory against Rangers to remember.

Month number 3.

Sorry I over shot things a little bit. I get too enthusiastic with Football Manager sometimes.

Middling is the best way to describe it once more. We got our first away goal, but we're still looking for our first away victory. However our home matches against Motherwell and Aberdeen saw two victories which is the most important thing. If we win the majority of our games and home and some away, we'll probably end up mid-table which I'm not too fussed about for the first season.

[img][/img]

We are fourth in the table, but will probably drop a couple of places if other teams win their game in hand.

[img][/img]

Our biggest game though was our semi-final against Rangers, where we looking to make up for our 4-1 defeat last season. I stuck with the same formation I usually go with, but opted for a direct counter attack to shake things up a bit and to make the most of our swift attacking players, but how did we fare under these new instructions...

[img][/img]

Honestly one of my favourite matches in football manager ever. I was overjoyed we got a two goal lead, and then felt utter despair at them pulling it back to 2-2. It felt like it was going to be one of those games where the other team pulls it back but goes on to win 3 or 4-2, but I told the players to tighten it up and they slowly eased their way back into the game and were more than a match for Rangers still, taking it to extra-time. As more and more time passed I felt as if we could actually pull this off, even if we did take it to penalties. I even bought on a striker for a defender in the 120th for the prospect of penalties.

But it wasn't needed. Logan Chalmers got the ball, and following a swift counter attacking move, put the ball into Dembele who put into it an empty net. The Celtic loanee getting the winner against Rangers, who would've thought it.

The reward? A final against Celtic, the fairytale continues.

Ah okay, thank you so much, I will remember that in future.

Thank you so much.

In some cases they do play 1-2's more often which is good to see, but sometimes they actually seem too far apart, particularly Dembele. I'm just hoping it takes a bit more time for them to get used to each other in the top division before their quality shines through, as more often than not, I can be a slow starter in a season. Shankland is starting to find some form now, I'm hoping the others will pick up.
I'm going to a larger league update tomorrow, but I have played the Betfred Cup final against Celtic and it was a corker.

An unbelievable victory. A early goal set the standard. However their quality began to show through and they equalised shortly after.

I realised they were getting on top of us, so I switched to a more defensive 4-4-1-1. I had used a direct counter attacking version of our 4-2-3-1 initially, but they were exploiting us far too much on our left hand side, so I put one of my central midfielders on the left wing, moved Glass into midfield and put Balogun as our number 10.

We took the lead through a corner shortly after and held on comfortably really. Our keeper wasn't troubled too much. Midway through the second half Powers scored a wonderful free-kick to ensure that we would be taking home our first silverware of the season.
