John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

October 2020

An excellent start to my reign as Southport boss. I would have liked us to win by a lot more but a win is a win and it means a safe passage through to the next round of the FA Cup.

5th October

Southport drawn away at Needham Market in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round

Another 1-0 win, this time in our first National League North game. This win was extremely impressive as AFC Fylde is never an easy place to go as Tranmere found a few years back. It's also great to kick the season off with three points.

I was a little disappointed to lose the clean sheet right at the end but I'm more than happy with the three points and a good performance.

I would have liked to have won by more goals but job done in the FA Cup, onwards into the 4th qualifying round.

15th October

Southport drawn at home against Altrincham in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round

A really good result away at Chorley but losing Zehn Mohammed for 5 weeks - 2 months with a hamstring strain is far from ideal.

23rd October

Goalkeeper Cameron Gregory joins on loan from Shrewsbury.

YESSSSSSSSSS! Unbelievable. Cameron Gregory has made himself a hero already, saving a penalty in normal time and pulling off a string of top draw saves before then saving two in the shootout. What a guy!

26th October

Southport drawn away at Scunthorpe in the FA Cup 1st Round

Another solid performance and another three points. Interestingly, I checked the league odds and following our signings we are now favourites to win the league!

A solid 1-0 win at Latimer Park to round off the month and we continue our 100% record so far.

November 2020

What an effort by the lads. We took a League Two side all the way to penalties away from home but unfortunately, it wasn't to be. I can't fault the lads.

7th November

Sam Gibson ruled out for 5 months with a broken foot

9th November

Southport drawn away at Alfreton in the FA Trophy 2nd Round

A very disappointing result this one. We could and should have won but if you don't take your chances that's what happens.

Exactly the same as the Farsley game. Very frustrating even after switching to our back-up two up front formation.

16th November

A bit of good news as the board agree to fund my next coaching course

17th November

Striker Tom Heardman signs on a free transfer.

That's more like it! A comfortable win and three points in the bag.

A 4-2 win against Gateshead at home but honestly, we could have had 8 or 9. We were superb and thoroughly deserved the win.

Another very good win at home against Telford. The lads are playing really well after that blip earlier in the month.

A poor defensive performance but when you're out scoring the opposition can you really complain? Another good result.

A great start to the month, an easy 2-0 win over Boston.

We got out of jail massively here. I made 9 changes and it almost backfired. Luckily we were able to equalise in stoppage time before winning the tie in extra time.

7th December

Southport draw Spennymoor at home in the FA Trophy Third Round.

Back in league action and a solid 3-0 win at home against Brackley.

Phew, again I made 9 changes for the FA Trophy and it almost cost us. The red card at 0-2 changed the game and luckily we managed to battle back to pick up the win.

21st December

Southport draw Weymouth away in the FA Trophy 4th Round

Another easy win in a match we dominated. The lads are playing some great stuff and morale is high in the dressing room.

A disappointing way to end the year with the red card costing us dearly. That said, I'd have taken top spot going into the new year at the start of the season.

January 2021

A very good win to start the month and the perfect response to the draw at Gloucester.

6th January

Shane Blaney joins Derry for a fee of 16k.

This was our hardest game so far on paper and it showed. We couldn't get anything going and we eventually fell to our first defeat of the season.

13th January

Midfielder Sam Perry and defender Joe Dunne join on loan from Walsall and Rochdale respectively.

Safely through round 5, job done.

18th January

Southport to travel to Chester in the FA Trophy 5th Round.

Bolton have pulled the rug from underneath us and recalled Harry Brockbank because we played him as a ball-playing defender. Wanky Wanderers indeed.

It took us a while but it was great to get the win, especially after going down to ten.

A poor first half but we came alive in the second half to gain all three points. Can't argue with that.

25th January

Well, this isn't ideal, Zehn Mohammed rejects an extension to his loan.

24th January

Defender Troy Brown joins on a free transfer.

How the hell have we lost this? We were by far the better team. Frustrating.

February 2021

A really good win at home against Bradford PA and a good way to bounce back after that Chester game.

Revenge! This is what should have happened in the league game last month.

8th February

Southport drawn at home to Chesterfield in the FA Trophy Quarter-Final

We left it a bit later than I'd like but we eventually got the job done with two late goals.

Given that Chorley are 4th, I should be happy with a draw but our second-half performance was nowhere near good enough. It was probably the worse we've played and I made sure the lads knew how unacceptable it was.

8 shots to 25 and we've not won the game. I'm angry. Defensively we were woeful and we should have taken more chances.

It was a tough game against a team from the league above but the lads showed superb character and heart to come from behind and win the game in extra time and put us into the FA Trophy semi-finals. I'm proud of the lads today.

Southport to travel to Chelmsford City is the FA Trophy semi-finals

Get the **** IN. Tom Heardman you beauty! I took a risk for this game going with a different formation for this game and Tom popped up with a hat-trick. We were a bit poor defensively in the second half admittedly but it's something to work with.

I feared the worst when Leamington equalised against the run of play with 70 minutes gone but two goals in four minutes meant we deservedly went away with all three points.

Another game where we didn't take our chances but we managed to take one and keep Telford out and that's all that matters.

Domination! Not much more to say really.

Another quality performance from the lads. Three goals and they didn't even have a shot on target. It's only a matter of time until we reach the National League.

Only a 1-0 win but at the end of the day a win is a win.

We needed extra time but there's absolutely no one out there that can say we didn't deserve to win and go through to the final. We were by far the better side.

An excellent season and promotion looks to be in sight. It would take quite the collapse! Not to mention the Trophy run has been fantastic and the fans can celebrate a day out to Wembley. Brilliant.

Couldn't have asked for a better first season!

April 2021

2nd April

It's youth intake day! Unfortunately, no one really stands out so I'll need to do some scouting.

A great result to end Gateshead's 7 game unbeaten home run. We dominated the game from start to finish.

3rd April

Adam Curry, Tom Heardman and Jack Bainbridge pen new deals at the club.

4th April

Denilson Carvalho signs a new deal with the club.

It was a bit annoying to concede but when you score five, who cares?

8th April

Following a scouting mission, we have confirmed two signings for the summer. Owen Conway from Boston for £875 and Charlie Bulmer from Chester for 1.2k

It wasn't our finest performance that's for sure but we did what we needed to do to get the three points in horrible conditions.

A disappointing draw but to be fair Blyth's equaliser was a stunner and their keeper was on fire. The draw isn't going to stop us from achieving promotion to the National League.

Despite Troy Brown seeing red in the first half, Brackley never really threatened and we eased to a 2-0 win.

Hereford gave us a tough game but we came alive in the second half to ease to a 3-1 win.

24th April

That win at Hereford confirms us as the CHAMPIONS of the National League North meaning we'll be playing in the National League next season!

30th April

Jake Kenyon signs a new one-year deal.

Thanks. You're not wrong, we've been superb this season.

May 2021

After sealing the title I made 10 changes to the team. Things looked awful at 0-3 but the fringe players battled back superbly to eventually draw 3-3.

Another draw, this time against second-placed York. They got lucky, scoring their only shot on target.

A Wembley final, I never thought we'd get to the final I have to admit. With Barnet being in the league above, we knew we were in for a tough game but the lads have shown all season that they're a great unit and this game was no exception. They battled like gladiators and managed to defy the bookmakers and come away with a 2-0 win. A really proud moment for everyone at the club.

After the win in the FA Trophy final, I gave all 11 starters a rest for the game at Alfreton. Unfortunately, we lost but I'm not all that fussed tbh. A lot of the players on the pitch will be leaving in a month anyway.

The Spennymoor game saw the return of the main 11 and they didn't disappoint, winning by four goals to one.

An easy 2-0 win in a game where the home side didn't have a shot on target.

23rd May

I'm delighted to announce that goalkeeper Cameron Gregory has renewed his loan from Shrewsbury for next season.

A superb final day win against Chester means we break the 100 point barrier in the National League North. What an achievement.

Congratulations! You'll be a force to be reckoned with next season. Cameron Gregory returning for another season is a lovely little positive. Tom Heardman has been a man on a mission since joining!
