John Warrington: A Footballing Journey

February 2022

Once again I played a changed side in the FA Trophy. It looked like we had the game won but Braintree were able to scramble an equaliser late on.

7th February

Southport or Braintree to travel to Weymouth in the FA Trophy Quarter Final

Another draw in the FA Trophy but we were able to go through 4-2 on penalties.

To be honest, the scoreline makes the game seem closer than it was. We battered Stockport and should have won by more.

A really good win at home against Leyton Orient. We never looked like losing to be honest.

We were absolutely clinging on at the end thanks to Troy Brown's red card so I'm delighted that we managed to pick up all three points. We're starting to open up a bit of a gap at the top now.

Mark Cullen is a machine! He scored a hat-trick as we smashed Guiseley by six goals to nil.

Seven changes for this one but it didn't matter as we eased to a 3-0 win and a semi-final place.

28th February

Southport to play Bath City or Dulwich Hamlet in the FA Trophy Semi Final

Cullen was an excellent signing. A veteran who knows where the net is. He's been electric for you.

Definitely, he's been a goal machine.

March 2022

With Yeovil being 3rd, this was a tough trip so I'm reasonably happy to come away with a draw. I definitely feel we could have won it though.

An easy 2-0 win to put us 12 points clear with two games in hand. Surely the football league is around the corner.

A bit disappointing to concede at the end but the three points are the main thing, especially with Bradford not playing.

With the fixtures piling up we are starting to need to rest players so I'm actually rather pleased to draw away at Chesterfield, especially given top scorer Mark Cullen wasn't playing.

9 changes for the FA Trophy, including young Owen Conway getting his debut. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the win as we drew 0-0 with Bath City at Haig Avenue.

My word we were poor in the first half! Luckily we improved in the second half and won 5-2 to go 16 points clear of Bradford.

We once again played a rotated side in the FA Trophy but the lads did superbly, winning by three goals to nil to put us into the final for the second year in a row where we'll play Bradford.

Not happy with this one to be honest. Barnet stole a point after being dominated all game. That said, we are 14 points clear with just seven games to go so every point puts us closer to the football league.

Almost there. Another magical year for yourself and Southport. Let's get the job done now.

April 2022

Argh so frustrating. Dorking scored a worldie in the 1st minute of the game then sat behind the ball for 90 minutes. At least we managed to get a draw out of it.

3rd April

Another underwhelming youth intake but it's going to be that way until we can improve our facilities and recruitment policy.

5th April

Jake Turner and Mark Cullen sign new deals at the club.

YESSSSS! A 3-1 win means we are CHAMPIONS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE and will be playing in the football league next season.

More great news! As a result of us being promoted to the football league, we'll be turning professional at the end of the season!

7th April

Aaron Ramsey agrees to extend his loan contract for the duration of next season, thanks Villa!

Arguably the hardest game of the season and we went and won it. Can't argue with that!

10th April

Chris Conn-Clarke and Nathan Dale agree contract extensions at the club.

12th April

Striker Tai Sodje agrees to join us on a free transfer at the end of his Man City contract in the summer.

Another game, another win. That win also puts us over 100 points, what an achievement.

Not going to lie, seeing us carry on winning after winning the title is really pleasing. It shows just how ruthless this squad of players is.

I gave a fair few players a rest for this one and it showed, unfortunately.

A good way to end the league season, we battered Maidenhead. Just the FA Trophy final left now.

Get in! A second successive FA Trophy win! A tremendous effort by everyone, especially the fringe players that carried us through the competition.
